Major Fail II
« on: September 03, 2013, 12:32:52 pm »
Sorry, have to get this off my chest.

Last Sunday, some saw, had a really good game....really good up to a point. Around this time last year is when I got my PB 1.026M and died on 21-2. But, at that time there wasn't near the jumble of scores now.

So Sunday, I'm having a great game again, not the greatest pace, but enough to put me where I'd like to be.

I start Level 21 with 1,011,600.

Here's  the thing to look at. My TG official score is only 1,015,00. Even if I do a modest 53K on this last level I have all the following milestones to cross along the way to 1,065M:

 7           TG 1,064,500  Steve Wiebe 8/30/2010 Arcade
 8           TG   1,062,800  Billy Mitchell 7/31/2010 Arcade
9           TG Pending 1,058,200  Steve Wiltshire  7/25/2013 Arcade
10           TG / Youtube 1,052,900  Mark Kiehl  8/7/2012 Arcade
11           TG 1,037,500  Shaun Boyd 5/4/2012 Arcade
12           Justin    1,034,700  Timothy Sczerby  2/24/2010 Arcade
13           Twitch   1,026,700  Dave McCrary 9/12/2012 Arcade   (MY own PB)
14           Twitch    1,025,200  Jonathon Mckinnell  7/7/2013 Arcade
15           Twitch  1,023,600 Mike Groesbeck   6/21/2013 Arcade
16           TG Pending   1,018,600  Kyle Goewert  7/28/2013 Arcade

And what happens?   I early jump a two barrel set on 21-1 and land on a barrel at 1,014,700!

It's still pretty wild how many scores would have been crossed on that one level. (I'm cursed.....but still playing)

That's gotta sting more than I'll ever know! You will have your day we all know it will happen. Just when's the question.

Yeah, there's so much congestion near the top that even 2-3 extra boards can significantly improve a player's ranking.

Ordinarily, I would have been there pulling for you, Dave, but recently my Sunday evenings have been consumed by "Dexter", "Breaking Bad", and "Low Winter Sun".

Sorry I missed it, as you obviously had a strong game going, despite the unfortunate mishap on Level 21-1.

Any chance of highlighting the broadcast, to allow for a future viewing?

I saw it on the archive.  It really hurt just watching it.

Did you consider just running boards on your last man?  I think you could have secured top 12 easily by doing that.  You can save your A game for later.  In fact, we all know you're capable of much higher pace.

Yeah it did sting.

Chat didn't appear to be working that evening. I had about 20 viewers at one point, but not one message came the entire game.. Maybe that helped me.

I didn't consider highlighting it since it wasn't a PB, but I guess I could just for future reference for others

MY first death was in the 400K's, probably deserved that one.

The second was a spring catching my foot going up....that death that should never happen. (Dont recall the score)

I managed to go to about 970K with my third man until 20-2. That loss hurt because it was the security/cash in I wanted to keep to 21-5. I got the hammer late on conveyors so subconsciously I wasn't expecting the conveyor shift, and it shifted me right into a fireball coming down the ladder.

I had a lot of boards that I call "Pace Robbers" , those stubborn boards that bring you down to the end of the timer, usually on conveyors.

I didn't think playing a 53K level would be a problem so didn't really switch to jsut running the boards. Even on that last death, I even remember seeing the wild barrel coming, and I knew exactly how I was going to handle it when I landed from the double jump, but the appearance of the wild barrel probably is what caused me to jump early.

Wow, no chat??

Yeah, we were yammering like crazy in there. You really push HARD! You were testing the hitboxes again and again.

The conveyor switch is something we all do (especially that late in the game), and the last death was rough. I would have steered those barrels out of the way before climbing, but if you were going for 53K, I guess it wasn't an option.

Absolute nightmare of an ending, especially given all the circumstances and what was at stake.

I decided long ago to get super-absurdly redundantly conservative when approaching a big moment. I've just seen it too many times in myself and others that it always seems to be those critical points of the game when your mind and the game start to mess with you the most, and disasters unfold unless you tighten way, way up. It happened to Ben too during the tournament!

Yeah I'll try and catch a replay after work if it's available. Would love to see how this was played out. I did a little streaming last night and watched Shane so I totally missed out on this.

Dave didn't want to come 2,700 points short off Steve Wiebe's score.
