I highly doubt it will be that soon. If his son still has college left after 2017, I'm sure Billy will be busy following him for at least a few more years after that. At least that is the vibe I got from him when we talked about it. He seemed a lot like my own dad in terms of seeking to follow his son's football career closely.

What Wiebe didn’t know then was that he was tallying scores that bested the established world record. So in 2000 he set out to claim the record.

Hmm. This is actually really important.

Some controversial dialogue from KoK:

"I looked at Twin Galaxies. I just--well, I typed in Donkey Kong world record, and some spreadsheet came up, and I saw what the score was. It was held by Billy Mitchell, and it was, like, 874,000. I go, 'Hey, l can beat that.'"

Wiebe has caught some shit for this statement, with him being accused of being part of the "Sczerby coverup."

But if that year is correct, and Wiebe started looking into beating the record in 2000, then it would vindicate him as not lying or covering up anything (at least as far as that statement goes), since Tim's score didn't happen until the second half of the year, and wasn't verified until 2001.

Not really DK originally related but it turned out to be. From a local newspaper in my small town of 26000 people.
In short we are 8 guys starting an arcade in a 100m2 basement below the local cinema. We play classic games and new ones (CAVE shooters) and the reporter really liked the fact I was the Swedish DK champ and write quite an amount of text about this. The real reason for the article was to preserve the arcade culture and to raise som new members. 9 members now. If anyone want more translation, please ask.

The King of Kong's Billy Mitchell is coming to Screenland Armour for a late-night screening and Q&A 

"Billy Mitchell is not an underdog. He was the standard bearer of classic arcade gaming — the champion Donkey Kong player featured in 2007 documentary, The King of Kong: A Fistful of Quarters.

Mitchell, with his dark mullet, beard and American flag tie, is a winner in the world of arcade gaming. Saturday night, he'll be at Screenland Armour (408 Armour Rd., North Kansas City) for a showing of King of Kong and Q&A after the showing.

The screening is set for 10:30 p.m. Saturday, August 8. Tickets cost $8 but are half-off with a Kansas City Comic-Con ticket stub. "

“Kongapalooza” and World Record Challenges at Retropalooza

The primary arcade tournament during Retropalooza will be our “KONGAPALOOZA” on Saturday, September 26, starting at 1 PM. The tournament will consist of three rounds. The first round, the most important round, will force (Is force too strong of a word?) every tournament entrant to play Donkey Kong 3, the ignored but absolutely awesome final entry in the original Donkey Kong arcade series. Donkey Kong 3 is this weird, Mario-less game where the protagonist (Stanley the Bugman) must evict Donkey Kong from a greenhouse by spraying him with pesticides. To be clear, the entire point of this tournament is to encourage everyone to play Donkey Kong 3. Every entrant will have one credit and only the highest eight scores will move on to play Donkey Kong Jr., the difficult but mesmerizing sequel to the original Donkey Kong. The top three scores in Donkey Kong, Jr. will then advance to the finals to play Donkey Kong for the following prizes:

1st Place – $250 cash and a 1 year unlimited play pass to Free Play Arcade.
 2nd Place – $100 gift certificate to Free Play Arcade
 3rd Place – a four pack of passes to Free Play Arcade

I know what you are thinking. With Donkey Kong 3 as the barrier to advancing in the tournament, the results of this tournament are going to be wild and virtually random. With any luck, you’re right.
