George, I'd say after about level 6 I knew I'd have a good chance to KS this game (assuming the KS was on 22-1, which I wasn't 100% sure of), since I finally realized 2 important things:

1) Only 2 fireballs ever come out on the Conveyor Stage, therefore this increases your chances for a free pass significantly! It also makes any other situation very easy to survive. A screwing on this board would have to be basically the epitome of bad luck. Since usually most of my deaths on normal DK are on the Conveyor stage, this helped me, specifically, even more. I also made sure during the first few of these boards to notice when the conveyor changes as well as if there was anything with the top conveyors that was different (like fast pies, like in Crazy Kong). There likely is a difference (I noticed in some cases several pies come out in quick succession, but not close enough to one another to make them impassible), but I didn't nail down any specifics. I did notice that if you get caught on the top of the retracting ladder as it detracts, you can be high enough on it to be in considerable risk of being hit by a fireball up top. I also noticed that if you retreat in this case you actually 'glitch' or 'slide' down the ladder significantly; so much so that you may risk hitting a pie below -so be careful of this too.

2) The springs on the elevators are grouped into pairs of two close springs. This makes the hardest level of springs virtually as easy as the springs on level 3 of normal DK. As long as you make your move for the ladder on a long, second spring, and with an ok 'jump', you will never die. You can even go for the ladder on a medium spring (if I remember correctly) with a great 'jump' and you can barely clear the longest spring. I cleared most of these boards with about a spring's width of room for safety -which is a ton! Essentially, if you take your time on this board, you ought to never die as well.

I hope these tips help. These are basically the most important things I figured out. The only other small thing I learned was from the way I died on the rivets trying to grab the bottom hammer with a standing jump -yeah, maybe don't do that...you need to be much closer to the edge then on normal DK, so it is risky, but it can be learned, I'm sure.

Like I said, this was basically no-hammers accept for on rivets (p.s. I knew about the invisible nature of the top rivet hammer already from Crazy Kong, so I did use that one still!). I never grabbed the hammers on the barrel screen (except for after I died on the KS for the first time, I grabbed the hammer on my next two lives), and I think I grabbed the bottom hammer on 1 conveyor screen because I didn't have the free pass and there were more pies on the screen than usual.

Edit: One other thing I remember was about fireballs: I'm not sure if they tend toward the right like in normal DK. I've heard mention that some players think this is the case with Crazy Kong, so maybe it is true of this one as well. I had a couple tough rivet boards that I barely survived that made me think this was the case, because I was trying to wait out a fireball on the top-left side.

Oh, wait a minute, you mean the top hammer is still there?   I have been playing the game as if it did not exist.   A lot of my deaths have come because of that.  That was the one thing I did not know.  OK, I'll try that next time.

Ah...man! I guess this game has the warp trick (?)... if I would have known that I could have tried to execute the glitch on the KS (though I've never actually done that glitch before). Do you die on the very next stage then anyways?

You have enough time to complete the pie factory if you get a free pass, and the elevators, but the rivets will get you.

You still have until 3600 on the clock (5 ticks total), but aside from the barrel screen (where ticks are determined by the release of barrels) the timer runs a lot slower for some reason on L22. It's not slow enough to complete the rivets though.

This is all inherited from Donkey Kong by the way (which is how I know about it). I've used cheat.dat on DK to warp to L22 and insta-finish the barrel screens (bypassing the kill screen bug) to see how the other screens play. You can finish conveyors and elevators, but not rivets.

I am going to make a post about this when I can get it organized, but the DK kill screen bug actually gets even weirder after L22 and up through L30...

I've had a bit more of a play of this variation tonight, is it just me or is the rivets significantly harder than in Crazy Kong?   They really seem to be a lot more aggressive and a hell of a lot faster than they are in CK.

As you can see once I got the inside scoop that there was an invisible top hammer I was able to killscreen it pretty quickly.  Plus I figured out an efficient tactic of just jumping quickly on the rising elevator at the beginning was a good way to finish the elevator level most of the time.  Strange how a couple of minor adjustments in gameplay can drastically influence a score.

Cool score on that Brian. I guess I'll try this game as I haven't played either Crazy Kong or Monkey Donkey. I may try to get the pseudo "WR" on Fix-It-Felix Jr too if I can force myself to point press the windows.... :/

Dan, honestly, knowing your skill-level on normal DK, you'll probably KS this game on one of your first tries. Enjoy this easy game while you take a break from the real challenge! ;)

iv had a couple of shots at the fix it high score, its pretty tedious waiting for the windows and you are at the mercy of how many the game decides to give you, i was ahead of pace right up to level 39 where it gave me like 10 windows less than usual...would be more interesting game if you could set it to 6 men only or something...

may try again if i can set it up in my DK cab...

Strange how a couple of minor adjustments in gameplay can drastically influence a score.

This.

This is really a key observation about classic gaming in general. If you can isolate even one "leak" and fix it, it's amazing what happens very, very quickly. You can struggle with something for weeks or months, figure out a single "trick" or technique that makes dying more preventable and suddenly you take the great leap forward...

When I figured out how not to get 1/16thed in DK (as an example), and got into the right habit of preventing it, that was huge. 1/16thing was one of the last things keeping me from a kill screen. Seems minor, but those "minor" deaths add up.

Hey way to go! I tuned in to the stream on the last rivet, but was confused as to what was going on (wasn't sure if it was save state or something).
