It would still be incredibly small.  I mean we would go from 1 in 100,000 to 1 in 10,000.  That is still a blip on the cultural map.
At the moment there are more Republican, male to female transgenders, who are attracted to women like Caitlyn Jenner than there are classic gamers out there.
So I could see this hobby becoming 10 times bigger only because we would still be extremely rare.

Edit: I am not joking about my comparison either.  There are about 3,000 competitive classic gamers.   There are 700,000 transgenders in the U.S.  cut that in half for male to female and you get 350,000.  About 1 in 5 are republican. So now you have 70,000.  About 1 in 4 are attracted to the same sex.  So now the number is 17,500.
Yes, there are five and a half times more male to female transgender, republicans, who are attracted to the same sex.

Let me explain in a point by point basis.
Point 1) We are a super small hobby
Point 2) You get a sense of just how small we are when you start comparing our hobby to things that are extremely unusual in life.
Point 3) We would still be a very small hobby if you multiplied the number of us by 10.
Point 4) Because we are so small I could see us being 10 times bigger because it wouldn't take a big social movement to get us 10 times bigger.

So if Caitlyn Jenner put up a legit DK score of say 350k would PSP do a profile of 'her' and add it to his 'Women of Gaming' section?  Would Caitlyn replace Kayla Rose as the best female Donkey Kong player in the world?  If there's a Donkey Kong tourney with a female division will Caitlyn Jenner be allowed to sign up for it?  Do you think Caitlyn would have an unfair advantage playing DK as Pauline?  Are Republicans better at Donkey Kong than Democrats?  These are the thoughts that keep me up at night.

Not agreeing or disagreeing, but you aren't really providing any sources for your statistics. I'm also not sure where the 3,000 classic competitive gamer count came from, but would be interested to know how you got there. Help us understand the math, please, so we can properly discuss this hypothesis and adjust the statistical model appropriately.

I think "in this hobby" needs to be defined. I believe there are more than you may think that enjoy the classics vs. actually compete at them.

3000 is a generous guesstimate.   I also didn't say just classic gamers.  I used the term competitive classic gamers.  People who care enough to put up a score for a classic game.

Again it is a guesstimate. I wanted a number that was a liberal guess.  Something most could agree was at either that number or lower.  It seems to me the number is much lower.  DK forum is 500.  Retro Uprising seems to be 1250 with top 10 scores.  I got that number from best players index, and noticed it went from 6 to 5 at 870 to 930, and 5 to 4 at  930 to 990 or so.  That says to me that there are about 1250 or so scores.  Donkey kong has 360 or so scores with many repeats.  I figured that marp and Twin Galaxies were not as large as RU because of the harder to submit scores process.  I also figured that there were a lot of repeats of the same people from all these organizations.  Also, I dont count the people who have not submitted a score in 30 years.  Back then they were not classic games.
So in short I guesstimated the actual number was 3000.
Having said all this I should have added two words to competitive classic gamer.  Competitive high score classic gamer.  Because there are many speed runners.  If you include them, the number is probably much higher.  Sorry my bad.

If you actually were able to follow my long rambling post, than you may very well have the mind to play Donkey Kong 3 at a high level.
