There are exceptions to the rule of course, but I have found that the majority of games I have taken at least semi seriously the 200,000 point mark is actually a serious bench mark. It marks the change from being just good at the game to very good. Now you may not be an expert at the game at 200,000 points, but you certainly are better than probably 90 percent of the people who have ever played that game. In fact I think the 200,000 point mark is actually a much more significant mark than the 100,000 point mark.
For instance when I crossed over the 100,000 point mark in Donkey Kong I actually intentionally killed off 3 men on the 3 level rivet stage. I got 106,000 for doing so. Didn't have to pass the dreaded Level 4 elevator stage. With the 200,000 point mark, I had to not only pass 1, but three level 4+ elevator stages.
Again with Donkey Kong Junior you can point press the 3rd level hide out without ever having to pass to hard to pass level 4 and up spring board bird stages.
Other examples where 200,000 is hard to come by. Moon Patrol. You have to pass the championship course at least once, and almost twice. Arm Wrestling: You have to pass Frank Jr. 100,000 all you have to do is pass the first two men, and catch the $50,000 money bag. Punch out. You have to pass the blue gloved Piston Hurricane, and blue gloved Bald Bull to hit 200k.
There are of course other examples, but you get the picture. 200k is a very significant mark even if people don't go crazy over it.
There are of course example where 100k is super significant like Congo Bongo, and Galaxian.
