Donkey Kong Tournament Edition

I've wanted to post this for some time but I was overwhelmed with juggling all the everyday things.
One thing I've learned is that *now* is the best time to do something.

--Here is Donkey Kong Tournament Edition--

It's Donkey Kong, but with a settings/tournament code screen that allows you to change all kinds of settings in the game.
Lots of things can be changed and I think it could make for some interesting variety in the gameplay.

Hopefully you enjoy it and it gets people playing more DK!  And hopefully use it in a tournament in the future too


When you start a game there will be a tournament code screen where you can enter a tournament code or change game settings.
The default code "ORIGINAH" plays a normal game of Donkey Kong with no changes at all.

Any changes will generate a new tournament code and these codes can be shared with other players so players can all play a version of Donkey Kong with the same settings and even optionally with the same randomness!


These are the options/settings that can be changed:

RANDOMNESS LVL select 4 levels of randomness from 0 (totally deterministic) to 3 (fully random).
RANDOM SEED allows you to set the initial seed for the random number generator.

LEVEL ORDER selects between US or Japanese stage order.

START LEVEL selects between starting at level 1 or level 5.

END LEVEL selects whether the killscreen happens on level 22 or level 6.

WARP PIPES optionally turns (unlit) oil barrels into a stage skip if you jump into them.

PLAY AS sets between different characters.  Luigi is faster and jumps further.
Giuseppe also climbs faster and can fall further.

BONUS AT enables or disables extra Jumpmen.

HAMMERS selects whether there are Two, only one, none or regenerating hammers.

JUMP HAMMERS enables Remix-style jump hammers and how often they appear.

HAMMER TIME selects between normal or half duration hammer times.

BARREL STEERING selects between low, normal, higher or highest barrel steering.

WILD BARRELS allows the level 3/4 type wild barrels to be disabled.

FREEZERS enables or disables freezer type fireballs/firefoxes.

BLUE SMASH PTS sets how blue barrel/smash points are awarded.  300/500/800 or random.

PRIZE POINTS sets whether the prize point values change by level or by how many you pick up.

TIMER enables an in-game timer and the option for 5 minute or 30 minute timed games.

ENHANCED INPUT enables context sensitive control enhancements. Basically less getting stuck
on ladders and fewer mistimed jumps.




How to run it:
Simply copy the file dkongx11.zip into MAME's roms folder and launch dkongx11 with MAME using the command line.
Basically the same as it was with Spooky and Christmas, etc..

Just for the fun of it I've also put together the MAME version of Spooky Donkey Kong that uses the same tournament code system.

Note that this is different from Donkey Kong Spooky Remix!  This is the "Spooky" version of regular DK with all the extra enemies and graphics and the spell casting intermissions added, plus the tournament code system and the game options that it includes.

And to complete the trilogy, I'll be posting the Christmas version of Donkey Kong Tournament Edition soon too.

Codes between the three games are interchangeable, meaning that any given code will result in the exact same game variant and gameplay between the three games!
The code ORIGINAH will play exactly like normal Donkey Kong even though the graphical presentation may be "Spooky".

Just copy dkongx11.zip to your MAME roms directory.

Here's Christmas Donkey Kong Tournament Edition.  Works just like the other ones but with a Christmas theme.

When warps are enabled, if the oil barrel is replaced by a chimney Jumpman can jump in and warp to the next stage.

Unfortunately, there was a bug in the first version of the DK Tournament Edition binaries.

The setting for enabling or disabling freezers in the game options screen was mixed up - when you set freezers as enabled, it actually disabled them and when you set them disabled it actually enabled them!

I've updated all three binaries in the posts above with a new version that displays the setting correctly.  The new versions say "Tournament Edition 2022" on the title screen instead of 2021.  If you have the 2021 version, please download the 2022 versions to avoid confusion.

Both versions still play identically and the tournament codes between them are still compatible/interchangeable, just that the options screen reports freezers as enabled when they are disabled and vice versa in the 2021 version... Oops

Just MAME.  Copy the zip file to MAME's roms folder and run MAME from the command prompt.  It's the same as it was with Spooky Remix.

Or you could get the DK Multi Remix game kit and Multi Remix graphics kit from https://www.dkremix.com/s/shop and install that in your cabinet.
