Average gamer can't make an impact on Donkey Kong

Ok, I'll say it.  If you are an average gamer it's impossible to make an impact on Donkey Kong if you are just starting out.
Now if you want a cool group to associate, by all means play this game.  But the average gamer needs to understand that people have been playing this game seriously almost every day before they came on the scene.
For the average gamer looking to actually make an impact on the gaming scene I would suggest playing almost any other game except Tetris, and Super Mario bros.
I personally consider myself a slightly above average gamer, but I know that I probably am too far behind to even think about b having a good enough score to qualify for the Kong Off.
To make an analogy, Donkey Kong is a mountain known to have gold, but one with a ton of miners mining for a dwindling supply of gold.
The smart miner would realize the real money to be made is in the silver, and copper mountains.
So if you're an average gamer looking to make an impact I would suggest something like Ms. Pac-man, Berzerk, Mario Bros. Super punchout, Donkey Kong Junior, 1942, Galaga, Frogger, and Crazy Kong.
Also don't wait to long to start playing another game because games like Donkey Kong Junior, Mario bros. Crazy Kong are also starting to ramp up in competition.

I really don't agree. I believe like any other hobby you will get out of this game what you put in. I have only been playing for a year and managed to break the top ten, and I only play one other arcade game.

I said average gamer.  I wouldn't be surprised if you had a 140+ IQ.   When I speak of an average gamer.  I speak of one with average intelligence.

I'm flattered, but for the record I have an average intelligence and IQ. I think success with this hobby is just like any other in that it relies on a strong sense of discipline and good work ethic, similar to learning a musical instrument or foreign language.

I agree with the music analogy.  I'd also say that anyone starting out is going to be more or less an average player.  And after all that time, discipline, etc they will no longer be average and yeah, then would have more of an impact.

I don't quite agree either. I personally think that I also have an average IQ of 150 (80 without using Lemay's math), and if I had started one year ago, I think I could've broken 1.1m within a year. Intelligence is very relative. An intellectually dumb person can still be extremely good at hand-eye coordination stuff. And someone with extremely bad hand-eye coordination can still be very bright intellectually.

I'm not god, I don't have all of the answers. So I gotta be careful how I share my opinions.
