Are we certain Mario can't separate from the hammer on the Pie Factory?

I was thinking that in Crazy Kong Mario can separate from the hammer and move on.
My thinking was this. Perhaps there's an unknown combination of inputs one could make to separate from the hammer.
I came to this thought brainstorming on ways to score higher on Donkey Kong.
And perhaps there's some extremely weird combination of moves. Just a thought

In Crazy Kong you don't have to stay with the hammer in part of the pie factory. You can walk away while the hammer is going.
This saves time.  Since time is worth points, it's a useful tool in Crazy Kong.
Donkey Kong doesn't have this same effect as far as we know

What does it mean to "stay with" the hammer? As far as I understand, the hammer follows Jumpman through the stage as he wields it.
