Differences between DK clones and bootlegs
« on: September 22, 2013, 08:13:34 am »
I'm trying to put together a definitive and up-to-date list of all Donkey Kong clones and bootlegs with the intent of highlighting the differences in game play, graphics, etc. I've run into a problem with determining an easy way of comparing jump-steering in the different versions. I've heard that it doesn't work in some versions, but I don't know which ones. Things like the floor trick, ladder trick, and Kong leeching are easy to test, but I feel that I would need to use the MAME debugger to really be 100% sure that jump-steering does or doesn't work in a particular version.

The problem is that I don't know what I'm looking for. I poked around in the "colored barrel" hack but couldn't see anything that indicated whether a barrel was steered or not...but obviously the hack is programmed to recognize steering due to the colored barrels.

So any help you guys could give me in figuring this out would be much appreciated. Below is a list of the clones, bootlegs, and hacks I know of and the techniques and qualities that I'm comparing between versions. Please mention any others that I've missed.

A few more differences you could track for the CK clones:

easy top top hammer grab
gaps in girders
barrel behavior like DK (no pause at end of girders)
