The 20k barrel screen challenge

Hello everyone!

I've been thinking about the possibility of doing a 20k point barrel screen. I know that Ross's best is 18,200 (if I remember well), and mine is 17,600 (obviously, these have been done while taking a lot of risks that a player wouldn't normally do in a real game!). I know Dean had a lot of 16k+ barrel screens, but I don't think he ever really tried to get a score as high as possible on a barrel screen while taking a lot of risks (which he wouldn't do in a normal game).

I definitely think that 20k is possible (with some good 800's, oh yeah!). I think getting 20k on a barrel screen would be pretty awesome.

The rule: Make a savestate at the beginning of any barrel screen level 5+ (you can also make a savestate on stage 2-3 barrel screen, but good luck trying to get 20k on these barrel screens! lol). And, obviously, you're not allowed to make any other savestates throughout the screens (only the one at the beginning when you restart).

If people want to put a bounty in that challenge, go ahead, personally I'm just putting this challenge for fun, since I would enjoy seeing someone get 20k! And I know that a lot of people could actually get close to 20k, or even get it, if they try a lot (well... maybe not Allen, haha).

i made a rom hack so that level 1-1 plays exactly like 5-1, that way you can start like a normal game and record an inp, rather than using a save state where you cant record...

i was hoping to be able to play the whole of level 5 like this but unfortunately the screen order is unchanged so you still get barrels rivets barrels elevator etc but they all act like level 5. i know jack about code so cant fix that but it works to record an inp and go straight to level 5-1...

if i remember right i just altered the bit of code that checks if the level is greater than 99 and forces it down (details on Don Hodges dk page) to check if the level is greater than zero, if so force it to 5...

You can use a save state and record.  Here's how to do it from the command line in WolfMAME .106.

1) Play to level 5-1.  Press Shift-F7, then press 1 to create a save state at the start of 5-1 mapped to the "1" key.

2) From the command line use "mame dkong -state 1 -record dkong51".  This will have MAME load the save state you saved in position 1 when MAME starts, and also record your input after that to the file dkong51.inp.  When you exit MAME your replay will be saved.

3) To playback your replay use "mame dkong -state 1 -playback dkong51".

Note that for somebody else to playback your replay they'll need both the dkong51.inp file AND the exact dkong-1.sta file you used.  The dkong-1.sta file is the save state file for dkong that you saved mapped to the "1" key.  .sta files are in the "sta" subfolder in the MAME folder.

My best ever was 10,300 points on L=1-1 not 13,000.

that was with getting a lot of 800 pt hits. second best was 10,000. I want to try it

Dustin, I think the challenge was for 20K on a 5-1 barrel.  20K on 1-1 would be impossible (maybe not theoretically, but practically speaking).

I know it is for 5-1.
My 1-1 best was 10,300. NOT 13,000.that was a typo.
