The
Donkey Kong Online Open will make its return to the competitive landscape on August 20
th after a 4 year hiatus. This is a straightforward, no holds barred DK scoring event. Players will compete over the course of 12 days to crown a winner and further cement their standings in the
Jumpman Points Race standings. To mark this momentous occasion here is a brief history of the tournament.
Originally organized by Eric Tessler and John Salter, the
Donkey Kong Online Open started its life in January 2013 as the Wildcard Rematch: a closed competition for those who had been wildcard players at Kong Off 2. One subsequent open Rematch event was held before the tournament transitioned to the Wildcard Qualifier: a series of three open tournaments to determine the wildcard playing field for Kong Off 3. Finally, in February 2014, the tournament became known as the
Donkey Kong Online Open and ran for another two and a half years, the last tournament occurring in October 2016 and featuring Crazy Kong as the tournament game.
* The
Donkey Kong Online Open made its first appearance in 2014 with Dave McCrary winning the first of what turned out to be 12
DKOOs in total.
* Past winners of this tournament include current world record holder, Robbie Lakeman and former world record holders Wes Copeland and Dean Saglio all holding 3 wins apiece.
* Wes Copeland leads the overall aggregate with a score of 1,190,000.
