My guess is that 90% or more of the DK'ers played or practiced with mame at some point, prior to achieving their current PB.
-
I played on MAME for the first week or 2, got 100k, then found a machine and only played on that. Took another 11-12 weeks before reaching the kill screen on the cab. I'm an observant learner...so I learned everything from watching Dean and Dave stream their games.
I never used a save state to practice anything on MAME. For some reason I thought it might give me a false sense of security or something...since I planned on playing on an arcade machine.

I am unable to participate in this poll, for one obvious reason. :(

Thanks, Ethan. When I finally achieve my first killscreen, I hope you and your grandchildren are there to witness it. ;)

The first step is actively streaming... :P

It may happen sooner than you think, smart guy. :)
I put together a playlist, in shuffle mode, of more than 300 songs from my music library. That way, you guys won't have to suffer through my consistently obnoxious commentary (actually, I rarely speak while playing, other than the occasional "Whoops!", "That's too bad", or "That was unfortunate").

I have to agree with the original comment. Nowadays, most KS'ers have probably at some point played/practiced on MAME. It's one of the advantages that a modern day player has over the 80's player. I'm not afraid to admit I did save state practice on the 3rd elevator when I was learning and it certainly accelerated my learning. I still do save state practice to experiment with things.
Once in a while I get a newcomer asking me how they can get started with DK and where they can buy a machine. My response it always: test it out on MAME first or find an arcade with DK near you. DK is not for everyone. Make sure you like the game before you buy it!

Uh oh... looks like Scott's throwing down the gauntlet!

Not so fast. That would leave me with only one glove, and I certainly don't want to be the catalyst for any sensational Michael Jackson sightings in the tabloids. ;)

Scott, remind me to show you the jumpman moonwalk next time you stop by my stream.. ;D

I started on playing DK on mame. I achieved a score of 300,300 on mame shortly before purchasing my arcade cabinet. Since then I have play exclusively on arcade for PB games. There have been times where I re-practiced springs, barrels, pies, rivets on save states to brush up for upcoming WCR tournaments, but all were save stated and never serious games. Since the 300,300 score on mame, my arcade pb has increased from 300,300 to 409K, 428K, 590K, 637K and most recently 700,700. Now I am focused solely on KS attempts since the 700,700 ended on 19-2 with 2 lives left. Yes I lost them both back to back on 19-2.

True, but 63% of forum members (126 out of 200) have fewer than 10 posts.
By the way, that statistic should not be interpreted as criticism; I'm just making an observation.
I would be genuinely surprised if any poll received more than 25% participation.

I played Donkey Kong on arcade machines sporadically from 1982 to around 2000. I don't think that counts, though, because I just enjoyed the game and only played at the occasional arcade, store, or restaurant. I didn't actually try playing for a score until 2009, and that was exclusively on MAME.

When you get around to posting in the Your Donkey Kong Milestones (https://donkeykongforum.net/index.php?topic=482.msg8668#msg8668) thread, be sure that "causing stella to be genuinely surprised" is prominently featured among your other DK goals. ;)
