I know this is DK forum, but I'm suprised to see almost zero mention of the Popeye arcade game considering it's another Miyamoto classic. Why is that? Do people just not like that game? Part of the reason why I ask is because I would like to improve at that game too and I can barley find any information about strategies, legitmacy of scores, etc. I see some scores on twin galaxies but idk how much I should trust those.

The top scores on TG are legit
A few people on the forum are good at Popeye but I don't think there's ever been much discussion regarding strategy etc. Best just to watch a video by Max or syscrusher

Yes

Forgive me for being ignorant, but for what reason do people not like Popeye? Just cuz you can't jump?

With me it's the same as Mario Brothers.. I was better at console versions of the game then arcade. Plus Arcades where really ending when this game and mario brothers came out.

You're big strong Popeye yet 99% of the game involves running around in circles in fear. I run away from my problems IRL, in an escapism game I want to at least pretend I can face things head on.

It's just not very popular, doesn't have anything to do with "not liking" the game. If you want to start posting your score for Popeye, feel free. :)

(suggestion: an Arcade Archives version of Popeye (arcade game) for Nintendo Switch systems)

I have a fondness for Popeye! My PB is around 700K, which I think is good (?) but only like five people have ever tried to seriously play it, and I think I'm in fifth place among that group. I bought a PCB over a decade ago to play in my DK cab.
It's not a great game, and I understand why it doesn't have a following. Like TSF said, I think it starts with the premise, which is off-putting and disempowering and demoralizing right off the bat. It's in that category of games like Pac-Man or Burgertime that are very popular among casual CAG fans, but not so much among hardcore CAG competitors, because it has that deadly combination of being tedious but lacking in real gameplay depth. You have to put in some work to develop the muscle memory and timing, but once you've done that, it just kinda comes down to not screwing up, and there's no real point-pressing to speak of. Having said that, Max Haraske is great at maximizing points per screen and definitely deserves the 3.2M record that he has on MAME. If someone like Jason Vasiloff were to turn their attention to it, you could see that broken. Barra could do it too, but I think he would rather die than try. chinUp
