Title: Kosmic's "After 44 Years, Someone Beat The Donkey Kong Kill Screen"
Post by: JNugent on January 31, 2025, 10:53:28 pm
I thought this would be good for some DK discussion.  I'm rarely here anymore, but enjoy watching DK news from afar.

Well done, Kosmic!

All this played out on the Kong League discord server! A wonderful showing from Kosmic and loved the JC credit at the end <3

This was all figured out, like, 5-10 years ago, right? I know for a fact that I've seen people, perhaps expandedidea or Xelnia, stating that the true kill-screen is the rivet board of level 22 because of the fact that you can do the climbing glitch. I know for a fact that the delay was already considered by them, and they recognized it as being necessary to pass the kill-screen, and they also recognized that the kill-screen glitch would make the springs slow as well as the fact that the factory stage can be completed quickly enough to ensure that one can finish on time, even with the restriction of the massively limited timer on level 22. I feel this title, as well as the video's contents, are highly misleading. While it may never have been done in practice using a TAS or frame advance, the knowledge that this was possible has been there for at least 5 years.

Once I realized the video was just talking about a TAS, and not a human-viable strategy that was actually achieved in real time, I immediately thought, "So, is he just going to do the climbing glitch with Kong having a delayed barrel release?" And that is exactly what we saw, indicating this was not new, unknown information.

Xelnia told me after JC made his video of trying it on the kill screen, "nobody really put a second thought into pursuing the potential." Even if it was still theorized to be possible at some point, all of the details and the actual execution of it are new. What contents of the video are highly misleading? Some people claimed you could make DK pause forever, but couldn't explain how it worked or show it in action. We figured out the precise mechanism and explained it and showed it in action. No one came forward with any video of someone making it up, only videos of getting close. This is the first evidence I have seen of actually beating the barrel stage. The video explains how the game works and the story of what happened last month, and also how it was looked into in 2013 but didn't amount to anything back then. I don't see how it's misleading? If you can share a video or post from someone actually completing it prior to last month, or breaking down DK's barrel release timings, I'll add an update in a comment/description. This post feels quite pointed to me; the video is very much a love letter to the game and the community

Yeah, I really don't know why Ohrami is being pissy. You did a great job, sir. The video put a big smile on my face.

While we're at it, who is gonna TAS-exploit DK's barrel delay to infinitely leech a fireball? 10 million, go!

Edit: 500th post hype Kreygasm

Great video and glad it went big!  My son even asked me about it :)

Great to see post 22-1 boards for the first time!

This video came up on my YT Feeds to make for some reason.   I felt the video was way to long..  Anyone that knows about the KS or the history of the game knows all this already. Then the fact at the end of the video it could never be used.. Felt like a huge waste of time watching the video.

The video was super informative for me, I never really understood how the interger overflow worked and this broke it down really well.
The video was also brought some attention to the OG game we all love (and hate).
It was also explained well that it's not feasible to do as a human, but we all knew this as players. The main point was to show it was not the technical killscreen of the US version of the game, even if 22-1 is 100% the human killscreen.

I thought the video was well done, and potentially brings wider attention to the game, Brian.  FailFish

Thank you for making the video Kosmic. Wonderful to see all these things explained with high production value and technical prowess!

On Ohrami, there's a reason he is banned from Kong League. Some people are just perma-contrarians.

Awesome work on the vid, Kosmic (and all others for their input)

While it is amazing that even after all this time a new discovery was made, I'm kind of relieved it won't have any bearing on competitive play!

This video was so popular for a hot minute it briefly trended Donkey Kong throughout social media. Goes to show that one good video with eyes on it can do wonders for the visibility of the game.

Agreed.
This video has 1.8M views.  And what I really like about it is that it's about Donkey Kong, but there is nothing negative or controversial.  It's just about some specific aspects of the game itself.  For the past 17-18 years, so much of DK news and interest has been centered in high score controversies, etc, so it's refreshing to see some interest that is generally positive and brings healthy attention to the game and community.
