Sure some of you've seen this for the Denver Comicon. The cool thing about this is as long as Steve Wiebe keeps get promoted at these events, it's a win-win for all DK players. It keeps DK and KoK alive.
However, I would like to see Steve step his live game pace up some. I know for these events he only gets so many tries and crazy atmosphere, but I probably would have called it a Million point attempt instead of the ellusive killscreen. He seems pretty confortable at crossing the 1M mark live.
Would be awesome to see him top his PB.
-
Definitely. Just looking at his playing style at the KO2, if he were to just maximize his hammer grabs a bit more, that would be 30k more right there (at least one more barrel per hammer). He could definitely play for 1m pace at these events, and if he wanted to, it doesn't look like it would take him much work to get 1.1m on his own time.
-
It would be amazing if Steve decided to go all out again on DK and took the world record back.
Anybody who can get a million in back-to-back games clearly has the potential.
-
As much as I'd love to see Steve get the WR back, I know he won't try for a WR live. I've discussed this with him before and he plays to please the crowd. I don't really blame him. The average person doesn't understand why you need to restart over and over how much harder a WR vs a killscreen is. A killscreen is pretty much a guarantee for him and an easy way to satisfy the crowd. The average person would rather see a killscreen than a world record attempt.
Anyhow, good luck to Steve!
-
I would never expect him (or anyone) to get it live. I'd just like to see him "go back to the garage" so to speak.
I don't think he's a 1.2 kind of guy, but he's so close to 1.1.

King of Kong 2: Back to the Garage
You just named the sequel, Chris.
-
I can just picture the 80s movie training montage. At the end of said montage, Wiebe and Billy Mitchell hug it out, but in a totally manly way. Set the entire sequence to Weezer's "In The Garage" and we have ourselves a movie!

Steve is a teacher, so if he's going to put up a score it'll probably be sometime in the summer. I don't think he does online forums, but I wonder if he's aware of DKF?
-
I had posted on his FB wall about DKF back in January, probably during the first or second week DKF was up.

First of all, I doubt Steve will try to get the record this summer. We talked about that at the Kong Off 2, and he kindda said:"Every summer, I either have the possibility to play Donkey Kong, or spend time with my family." And I think he obviously rather spend time with his family. But he will probably try a little bit, hopefully!
And Steve definitely knows the existence of the DK forum. 3 months ago, I sent him a Facebook message telling him to take a look at the DK forum if he wanted, and he replied:"Hi Vincent! I'd love to join the forum. Thanks for the invite and look forward to seeing you at the next Kong Off."
Maybe he kindda forgot about the DK forum (he's obviously not the type of guy that goes on forums and stuff).

Yeah, I remember Dean commenting that Steve could score a lot higher if he just tightened up his hammers a bit.

I don't mind being labeled as the type of guy that goes on forums. It's the "...and stuff" portion of that statement which has me understandably concerned. :)

"and stuff" means: Going on twitch/streaming. ;)

Ok, smart guy.
Until the streaming thing happens, all is not lost. You'll have ample opportunity to laugh at my gameplay in person.
Don't blink, or you're likely to miss a couple of hilarious conveyor deaths. 8)

If anyone should be streaming his play on Twitch, it's Steve Wiebe... his channel would be blowing up with viewers!

3 years ago, Steve Wiebe played at the E3, and his 3 attempts were streamed live on justin.tv (twitch.tv was called "justin.tv" back in the day!). I remember he got 900k on his first game, 650k on his second game, and around 990k on his last game (kill screen) on his 3rd man. And he got a peak of 8k viewers on justin.tv (even more than Allen! haha). So streaming his games could be a good idea, it can grab some good attention!

I think this site has been dormant for 3 years, don't know what's up with that but at one point the idea of streaming was entertained...

I would love to see Steve go for the WR again too. I'm not saying I would hope he would get it, but just that he finds the fire again for kong. It is hard for the players with family to balance kong/family time. I bet he is more focused on family now, and will put kong on the back burner for a few years yet. We shall wait and see though. Oh yeah, and I'm down with them doing kok2. Awesome.
-
I hope he turns into the DK version of Joel West in 15 years! ;D
-
Got to meet Steve at the KO2. We are both teachers and really only talked about education. Nice guy.
-
So, it appears Steve got his killscreen at Denver comicon just now, but I think it was less than 850k killscreen. Crowd loved it and made their day.
EDIT: 836,300 killscreen
-
Ha i love how hank and vince have their pics crossed out with each other.. like ghost busters .. love it.
-
836k? Damn, he must've speed ran it. I don't see him getting lower than 875k without wasting point on purpose. But props to him, it's always cool that Steve is always able to kill screen Donkey Kong when he plays live!
-
Yeah 836k is low but I'd be happy with it. Lol.
-
This guy has a video of the final level, I think you need to be logged into google to view it, not sure.

Cool video, good quality. I don't know how Richie picks Steve up like that, strong dude!

Little article on Wiebe's game, I didn't realize until I read the commetns on facebook that you can't read TG articles unless you're a member and logged in.
As for Steve, I'm always happy for him during these events, he'll always have the "rock star" reception due to KoK. Couldn't happen to a nicer guy.

Yeah that's crazy. You shouldn't need an account to view that stuff. Good job Steve on yet another kill screen in front of a big crowd.

Richie told me he once lifted a Pole Position 2 cockpit by himself... so Steve is lightweight.
Vincent has the lowest killscreen score of the weekend though. 543K at FS. I had to coach him on how to screenkill the killscreen.
-
Steve is not as good to be as bad as me.
Yeah, to not risk to die on the kill screen, I skipped the bottom hammer. I didn't want to pull an Ethan.
-
Its funny that there are approximately now 40 killscreen scores above the Steve score this weekend, he almost got the lowest KS score while playing a normal game.
I had to coach him on how to screenkill the killscreen.
How, sit to the left of the oil can?
-
How, sit to the left of the oil can?
Actually I'm not sure that's a safe way to get 0 points on the killscreen. The very first blue barrel hits the oil can before the 3rd barrel reaches the middle ladder between the 3rd and 2nd girders. Usually you get a couple of seconds after that the 3rd barrel comes down. That's probably enough time for the fireball (if it goes left) to kill you. Anyone know?

It is just enough time
Go to 5:45, I remember Billy doing this on his killscreen, shown in the KoK side by side

Before Vincent spills the ugly details, I will.
I played 4 games of DK at Funspot this past Saturday. My high score was 50,500 (Level 3-3 Elevators).
Vincent is now convinced that my DK personal best on MAME is a complete fake.
I'll offer the following lame excuses reasons for my control panel ineptitude:
- The throw of the joystick as opposed to the instantaneous keyboard response (although Hank warned me about that beforehand)
- The reversed L/R controls versus the default MAME key mapping (huge mental block on all but the most straightforward barrel combinations, and I screwed up a few of those too)
- Incessant laughter coming from behind me (distinctly French Canadian in origin) :)
For me, transitioning to the DK arcade platform, after playing exclusively on MAME for 3 years, is like trying to play guitar while wearing oven mitts (I can't play guitar anyway, but it's the first analogy I thought of).
-
Scott, and your pace would even have been lower than my 543k if you had reached a kill screen!... haha, kidding.
Even if you obviously didn't play well with the arcade controls, it was nice hanging out with you and speaking about a bunch of DK stuff ;-). And I'm still waiting for you to create the topics you were talking about at Funspot! ;)

No worries Scott. I'll offer a few details of my first day on a joystick. Keep in mind, I had already killscreened in MAME when I transitioned.
1- During my 2nd game, I didn't even pass 1-1. In fact, I was wondering why I didn't get a 4th man.
2- My high score for the day was 200K.
This is why I was absolutely amazed that Jeff W got 1.1M+ at KO2. I know he had the control panel, but still.
-
I was also initially amazed Jeff did what he did at KO2...but after watching Jeff play some of those Mario hack levels, i'm not surprised at all that he did what he did. DK is such a slower paced game with less going on, than some of those crazy Mario hack levels...and he makes them look easy.
-
And I'm still waiting for you to create the topics you were talking about at Funspot! ;)
I've got at least 25 topics that I've been planning. First, I have to remember what they are (some of them, anyway). Next, I need to motivate myself to compose, type, and click [Post]. I'm a notoriously poor typist, and composing anything longer than one or two sentences is borderline agony. Locating and clicking the [Post] button presents no major problems. 8)

Thanks, Hank. I feel much better.
On Saturday, I meant to ask about your freshman dorm and undergraduate house affiliations, but forgot. I lived in Massachusetts Hall (the tiny one, just inside of Johnson Gate) during the 1976-77 school year, and in Lowell House thereafter.
One last item that I've already mentioned: If you ever find yourself back in Cambridge, I highly recommend planning a visit to Mary Chung Restaurant in Central Square. If you are a fan of spicy dishes, the "Suan La Chow Show" and "Dun Dun Noodles with Shredded Chicken" are both outstanding.

There are a number of moments in that video that made me simultaneously smile and shake my head.
A few highlights:
Barrel Screen
0:44 "And then three barrels you jump over, it's 800."
In all the hours of video footage, nobody told this guy about the 800 sprite bug?
0:46 "Three barrels is quite an amazing feat."
Not so much. It all depends on the spacing, but 97 out of 100 times, a guaranteed yawn inducer.
You want amazing? Try backjumping just 2 barrels.
1:13 "More and more barrels will start colliding with you."
Completely unaware of this fact. During even my best games, just one collision and I'm already dead.
1:35 "He uses the hammer to his advantage."
1:38 "Which is dangerous, 'cause it slows you down. Like, you can't get rid of that hammer."
Good safety tip.
Note to self: From now on, avoid all hammers on the barrel boards. They're bad news.
Rivet Board
2:48 "The countdown, of the points, the bonus score, that's your timer. Like, everyone thinks it's not timed."
Do you know anyone who thinks that? Me neither.
2:53 "But, Donkey Kong, if you linger too long and you have zero bonus points, your game's over."
It saddens me to learn that a single bonus timer infraction will abruptly terminate my game.
Pie Factory
4:19 "The other interesting thing is that this game is over with 22 screens."
Screen #22 is actually the conveyor stage on L6, but I'll let it go.
Elevator Screen
Commenting on the Super Jump:
5:19 "And they make some other daring choices. Like, watch Steve as he jumps straight over, to that. That's pretty skillful."
Why am I not surprised? This is coming from the same guy who thinks 3 barrel jumps are amazing.
-
I don't think they have even a 20 second streak where they don't say something wrong or ill-conceived.
Oh well, god bless 'em.
