So I'll apologize in advance if this is something that already exists, but would it it be possible to hack a rom or add to the DK trainer the ability to disable blue barrels/wild barrels or even the timer?
The reason I ask is because I'd like to sit at the 5th girder all day long and just practice grouping there without the fear of a firefox coming up from down under.
I know this doesn't test a real world scenario, but it would be useful to people like me who are just starting out. I'm not a giant fan of save states for some reason.

Save states are great, I use them all the time when playing Donkey Kong on the Switch.
-
Disabling the timer would be a pretty cool feature
Disabling wilds for the sake of grouping probably isn't a great idea as they create all sorts of different combos that you wouldn't be exposed to with them turned off. These combos only occur every so often as opposed to the normal 1x300 and 2x300 rejumps, and are the ones that'll kill you during a real game if you aren't prepared

You can use MAME cheats to prevent Fireballs from spawning on the barrel board, so you can use that to practice grouping.

On the back of what Flob said, there's a bunch of useful cheats you can use in MAME for DK

Thanks guys, I had no idea!
That will help a lot, much appreciated!
I'll take the advice on the barrels on board, Barra. I'll just disable the timer.

Best of luck mate
I didn't actually realise this was an option either. Will definitely be using it in the future if/when I want to take a serious shot at 1.13m+
-
Do you suggest I sit on say lvl 5 and practice there? I presume the wild barrels are less crazy at this point than practicing on level 1-3?
-
That's definitely what you want to be practicing most since nearly every barrel board in the game is level 5 difficulty. No need to worry about the crazy level 3 wild barrels there.
-
Yes mate sit on L5 (or above).
I wouldn't recommend trying to group with the wilds on levels 2, 3 and 4 being so aggressive
All depends what you're shooting for of course. Anything below 1.1m you won't need to group on the start levels. L4 can be an exception if you get the bottom hammer and the wild barrels turn into type 3 (same as L5+) by the time you transition to the 5th girder
Clear as mud? :)

Sadly, I am understanding this game enough to get exactly what you both mean.
I would like to shoot for 1mil right now. But 900k would make me happy..... this week ;)

900k you should be able to achieve just running boards. Once you get this, you can be confident your base game is good and is free from any significant flaws <Allen>
1m is your base game with bottom hammers added (and the 2 spring prizes if you like), with maybe 10k more on your start
Best of luck!
