On July 11th, Steve will be attempting to regain his record starting at 2pm.

::)

These events were always billed under false pretenses (none of them are ever actually genuine "world record attempts" because spectators would not understand restarts), and I think the "marketing" of them that way annoys even Steve, but yeah, at this point, c'mon.

Unless he's been out in that garage for the last few months, he'll be lucky to crack the top 10!

Though I have to say, I would be really happy if he did...

I heard this guy survived a home invasion. Allegedly, Twin Galaxies sent 12 ninjas to stop him from getting the DK world record, but he was able to  subdue them all with a mysterious gummy substance.

Jace mentioned on State of the Galaxies tonight that he had heard of this event and may be flying out there to meet Steve. It might be streamed too. Wait and see.

Mitch, while you are there you should try and secure this movie poster (at least that's what I think it is).

Good idea. I'll see if they are handing some out. If so, I'll snag a few to share. If not, I'll try to get Steve to help me get the authentic one (in the case there is only one). I'm gonna be going both days, so I'll have time to hopefully make friends with the organizers.

I received this message on FB today. We'll see if anything cool comes of it.

"Hi Mitchell, I'm a suburban newspaper reporter and I'm considering doing a story this weekend about Donkey Kong, given the appearance of Steve Wiebe at MOA. I'm trying to find elite DK players in the Twin Cities, and your friend Gary pointed me in your direction.

It's not a done deal yet, this story may not happen, but if I can work it out, I'd like to put something together. Would you be willing to talk with me about your interest in pursuing an elite DK score?"

Hey, Dana is a local guy that I met back at Rusty Quarters when it was still around! Cool to see he's still into DK, as I think he has an account here at DKF from a couple years back when I let him know about the site, and I believe he even got a DK machine a year or so ago for himself as a birthday gift or something like that (edit: just finished the interview... looks like he still has the machine!). Hopefully I'll see him this weekend.

In other news, another guy contacted me on FB and he seems to have access to the event posters. He said he's willing to send out posters to people if I can collect addresses for him. So, if you are interested, please send me a PM with your address, and, depending upon the demand (if way too many people want posters, I'm not 100% sure if he'll still be up for shipping them all out, so no promises), we'll see if we can get those out to people.

Hello all --

Thanks for posting my the link to my interview with Steve. It was great to chat with him.

I have been lurking here and soaking up advice in this forum for about a year since Mitch told me about it. I haven't posted because I never feel like I have much to add to the conversation haha.

Mitch is right, my fiance got me a machine a year ago. It is a multicade in a refurbished Donkey Kong cabinet. In a year since owning it my high score has gone from 60K to 250K but I seem to have plateaued of late. Need to get out of a rut.

I will also be at the mall this weekend and will pass along any cool info I find out. Looking forward to the event. Since Rusty Quarters closed I haven't had much of a chance to talk classic gaming with folks.

Cheers!

Looks like it is confirmed that Jace is gonna be there! Lovit.

And I had gotten so used to nothing cag-related ever happening in my hometown...

Since it was simple and straightforward (and since there was none of my usual performance anxiety around it) I made a post about this on the ol' blog:

Great interview, Dana.

Alright.

The first night was really fun. They showed the KOK in the theatre and had some cool 80's-themed previews beforehand (basically 80's music videos and commercials). Afterwards, there was time for Q&A with Steve where a mic was passed around for people who had questions. After that there was a chance for getting autographs.

For the question time I first asked Steve what his favorite DK board was. He said it was the Pies Stage. I also asked what it was that he threatened to take away from Derek during the infamous "Wipe my butt!" scene. He said that what he said was "If you don't be quiet, I will take away your Rush!" "Rush" -as in the band, Rush. Apparently, Derek had been given some Rush music for learning to play drums. Lastly, I asked Steve what his personal best was on DK in college. He said it was in the 900Ks around 1991. He said he KSed the game at least 3 times trying to figure out what was up with the KS bug, since it was basically unknown to people back then.

After the Q&A I had a chance to meet with the organizer (Chris), the Bloomington newspaper reporter that had contacted me (Mike -who said he was able to interview Steve for about an hour before his flight to MN), and Steve (I also had a chance to say hi to Dana before the movie). Additionally, Tim Ballderamos, the perfect pacman player, was in attendance as well. After I let the autograph line die out, Steve and I got into some exciting conversations about DK point-pressing and potential KO4 bracket competition strategies. I was also able to snag about 15 of the event posters and had Steve sign 5-6 of them. So, if anyone wants me to mail one to them, be sure to PM your postage info. I'm gonna do it on a first-come, first-served basis (with signed ones being used up first).  So far, I already have 2 people (Jeremy and then Allen) who have given me their info. Lastly, I also had a chance to have Steve sign my copy of the DK manual that I used for my final major edits I made to it before KO3.

I walked with Steve and Chris (the organizer who put him up in an hotel attached with the MOA) as I was heading out and let him know that we'd love to have him sign up on DKF and that there'd be no pressure to be a huge contributor or anything that would soak up all his time.

Tomorrow I will be there for the entire time Steve makes his attempts. He said he's been practicing as of recently for the KO4, so maybe he has a good chance to beat his own PB. If Jace has something set up with the TG stream where I can give DKF a shoutout, I'll be sure to do so. Maybe I can even supply some sort of commentary on his gameplay (*hint to Jace, if you read this!*  ;D )

Oh shit, this is Friday/Saturday??

I thought it was Saturday/Sunday. I have the thing totally wrong on my blog.

Ha, no correction from anybody, that proves my suspicion that nobody actually reads the damn thing and I never have to make a post again! ;D

I've actually played on that machine a couple years ago. Maybe he said this on KLOV already, but, Adam (the local collector who owns the machine), has these parties at his place every summer and I went once two years ago. He's a really nice guy and he has a great collection of well-maintained games.

Update:

I was able to snag 5 signed posters and 9 unsigned posters yesterday. Six people have already contacted me for one, so we are all out of signed posters at this time, but I intend to try to get some more signed posters from Steve, tonight, if able.

Well....what was the final outcome?  I had to stop watching around 5:00 p.m.  Steve had posted a 707k run, and Mitch was playing at that point, trying to best Steve.  I don't find any info on the webs, somebody please give the final update.

Hopefully the stream will be up on TG's channel soon (with audio) so people can see what took place. If not, I'll take some time to type up a quick summary.

One note for now, though: I was able to snag about 6 more signed posters and probably about 15 more normal posters, so keep the PM's coming, if you are interested. For anyone who intends to be at the KO4, just let me know and I can simply deliver it to you there!

Sent you a PM, or I believe I did (can't find sent messages). Not used to the board yet.

Was fun watching the stream the other night. Only complaint is I wish Steve got a smaller sized soup, and had one more run.

Just an update for everyone still waiting for their posters. I intend to bring the posters to the KO4 and distribute them to those who asked for copies that happen to also be at the event (to save on shipping), after that, I have a week free to ship out the remaining copies to those who will not be in attendance. I'll probably also get Steve to sign a few more, since I think I have one less signed copy than the number of people who asked for them. Additionally, I have about a dozen extra other copies unsigned that I'm sure people at the KO4 would love to have to get signed by Steve as well. Just letting everyone know that I'm not forgetting to send them out! Cheers.

Thanks. I won't be at the Kong Off, but would still like to get a signed one. (I believe I was in the first group.) I can PayPal you the amount to cover shipping.
