A thought on aging players
« on: July 07, 2019, 06:05:16 pm »
Billy Mitchell getting a perfect Pac Man has made me realize something.  It's not just Billy Mitchell, but it seems true for many older former champions.
My insight is the older champions are like former big time rock stars.
It doesn't matter if they are at the top of their game.  It only matters that they play decent.
The Rolling Stones are nowhere as good as they used to be.  Neither is Paul McCartney, but fans still want to see it.
I could imagine 20 years from now someone will set up a streaming event where I barely get a repetitive blue screen on easy.  The 10 or so viewers that will watch will go, "he's still got it!"  And I'll be, "no, I don't have it at all, you all are insane. And my scores may not even be in the top 5, but those ten people will be like, "The king of Donkey Kong 3 got a repetitive blue screen!"
So even in my old age there will be ten or so people who will still want me to play Donkey Kong 3.  That's something I didn't think would happen until recently.

I am not a ranked player like many on the forum, but am pretty damn good at console games. At 33 I am finding it a lot harder to do the cool things I used to impress people with. I might need a heart valve surgery soon (no, I'm not dying), and that got me thinking. Do any of you champions feel obligated to maintain your skills, all for your fans' sake?

noones gonna remember any of the classic games in 10 years because the imminent apocalypse will make ancient games the least of peoples concerns
