Title: How not to get pied?

Time and time again I get caught by a pie on the 2nd top tier, as it emerges from the side, just when I'm climbing a ladder, either to get on the pie level, or trying to get to the top tier.
Is there a strategy to avoid this from happening?

Pies can't spawn immediately after each other, no matter where they spawned from, so before going through the danger zone where a spawning pie could hit you, wait for a pie to spawn anywhere else and then hurry up and get through it.

You'll get used to the timing so you'll know how much window there is if you're forced to delay a bit because of a fire or something, but the "can't spawn immediately after each other" is the key.
