By what names do you refer to the following moves:

Exhibit A

Exhibit B

I've always viewed Exhibit A as a back jump, which can occur anywhere, not just over a barrel (i.e. popping a rivet and then jumping back to avoid a firefox). Ethan has pointed out that there is a sprite redraw which would fail the "pure" back jump 33% of the time, which is interesting as well.

The girder is going down to the right and of course the flow of barrels is to the right; to me mario going left is forward, right backward. Both are back jumps. A - Pure backjump, B - Running backjump.

My definition is fairly straightforward.  A backjump occurs when the direction of the jump is the same as the direction that the jumped object is moving.  Whether Mario is initially facing left or right is inconsequential.

In each example given, Mario is jumping to the right over a barrel that is also rolling to the right.

In my opinion, Exhibits A and B are both backjumps.

I've always assumed both are technically back jumps.

However, B is a specific type of back jump known in my house as a "Rey jump." It's like how Rey turns and runs away from Kylo's TIE fighter in Rise of Skywalker, and I usually do run away a bit before making the jump which seems to help me get the timing down and avoid panic jumping too soon.

Are there any functional differences between A and B?  Is your hitbox different depending on which direction jumpman is facing?

i guess taking into account whether or not a barrel or object is also being jumped makes sense...the rules differ for The Serpie Backjump BONANZA! challenge(which is how this discussion even came to be) <Allen>

Yep, both of these are "back jumps".

The move that probably should not be considered a back jump even though I'll often hear it referred to as such is the early broad jump over a barrel to grab the top (or bottom) hammer followed by reaching back and smashing that same barrel -- often Jumpman is facing backwards during this maneuver which confuses the issue.
