DK and High Score Save Kit
« on: February 20, 2019, 07:14:13 am »
I just installed my DK High Score Save Kit (bought from Arcadeshop), and to my surprise it looks, plays and feels like the US Set 1 now, when I have the Japanese ROM set on my PCB (most notable differences are the order of levels and the ability to enter up to 12 letters in the record table).

Interestingly though the walking sound is the "uniform" sound and not the one with the slight variety in pitch. This was also the case with the original ROM set, however.

So my question, out of interest, is what the Save Kit actually does. Does it still make use of the chips on the PCB or is it now all running on the Save Kit board? Why isn't the walking sound the variety kind?

It runs from rom code contained on the save kit board. If you want high score save ability while continuing to run the original roms, sock master's dk remix is the only one to offer this.

The sound issue has to do with the board circuitry not the code in the roms, thats why your sounds are still not right.

So just that I understand this right:
The DK High Score Save Kit runs the game in its own board, but if I were to carry out the PCB mod and cut tracings (eek!) and so on, I would get a warbling walking sound?

If you have a TKG-11 boardset and if you do that mod correctly then yes, you will have the proper walk sound. If you have a -12 -13 -14 and a flat walking sound then you have a different issue, still wont be related to the high score save kit.

My board is the TKG4-11 board (see picture), so I should be good?

Yes, the mod will correct the circuit and produce the warbling run/climb sounds.

You shouldn't need to cut any traces if you follow the the instructions properly.  The only trace that could need to be cut is between R48 and pin 12.

Thank you!
And "lifting a pin" really means snipping it off close to the board and bending it up a bit, doesn't it?

And: does Mike's mod with cutting the traces? As far as the soldering goes, it seems to be the simpler solution compared to lifting the various component parts (looks cleaner too).

I jumped in and did the mod, and it's all working.
