I'm new to the forum, huge DK fan but not very good at it, my hs is 150,000.
One thing I've never been able to figure out is the 'height' numbers and level numbers that appear on the screen. For instance, it seems like the height value for the barrel stage varies as you go through the game. Can someone clarify what these numbers represent?
Thx

The "height" numbers don't really signify anything important within the game...they're just a way of telling you how far you've progressed in single level. I suppose they're part of the game narrative: you're climbing higher and higher to try and save Pauline. The height numbers always correspond to the same type of board on a given level EXCEPT if you die on a rivet on L=05 or later. If that happens the game will reload the "How High Can You Get Screen?" and indicate you're only on 125M, which would be the previous barrel board.
L=01
25M = always barrels
50M = always rivets
L=02
25M = always barrels
50M = always springs
75M = always rivets
L=03
25M = always barrels
50M = always pies
75M = always springs
100M = always rivets
L=04
25M = always barrels
50M = always pies
75M = always barrels
100M = always springs
125M = always rivets
L=05+
25M = always barrels
50M = always pies
75M = always barrels
100M = always springs
125M = always barrels*
150M = always rivets*
*unless you die on a rivet on L=05+, in which case the rivet will reload as 125M.
Most people now refer to the levels and height numbers in the "A-B" format, where A is the level and B is overall board # within that level. So, 1-2 is the rivet stage on Level 1, but the rivet stage on Level 5 is 5-6. Another example: the first, second, and third barrel boards on level 7 are 7-1, 7-3, and 7-5, respectively.

Welcome to the forum, Adam!
Jeremy's explanation is correct. This is just another way of looking at it:
Level # | | Barrels | | Conveyors | | Barrels | | Elevators | | Barrels | | Rivets |
Level 01 | | 25m | | | | | | | | | | 50m |
Level 02 | | 25m | | | | | | 50m | | | | 75m |
Level 03 | | 25m | | 50m | | | | 75m | | | | 100m |
Level 04 | | 25m | | 50m | | 75m | | 100m | | | | 125m |
Level 05+ | | 25m | | 50m | | 75m | | 100m | | 125m | | 150m |

Yeah, the table was already created by the time I noticed your reply.
I wasn't about to let it go to waste. ;)

Now that Adam's question has been answered, let's hijack this thread and talk about Steely Dan. 8)
Where's Steve?

Hi Adam, welcome aboard!
Steely Dan hype? (http://mightyjoecastro.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/09/Steely_Dan_poster_screened.jpg)

Thx for the replies and the welcomes! This game had me under it's spell back in the early 80's and now with emulators it has me once again! I can't get enough of it!
Can't comment on Steely Dan-- I'm not much of a fan.

Something I posted a couple of months ago... A little bit off topic, but still a little bit relevant :)
Assuming each screen is 25m of height. Fred is about 6.58% of the height of the screen, Pauline ca. 8.68%, Donkey Kong ca. 12.4%. Based on these ratios their approximate heights in meters are
Fred - 1.64 m
Pauline - 2.17 m (Shaquille O'Neal is 2.16 m)
Donkey Kong - 3.1 m
I was also interested how high Fred has climbed when he reaches the kill screen. Each L5+ level is 150 m and levels 1-4 are incrementally higher by 25 m starting with level 1 at 50 m. That adds up to a total (ignoring the extra few meters that can be achieved at level 22):
Level 22 - 2.9 km (tallest building in the world is 830 m)
...And yes, I refuse to use anything else but the metric system 8)
