Title: Blogalicious
Post by: Barra on April 09, 2014, 05:57:05 am
Hi my name is Andrew and this is my story!  <YSG>

Just want to post some of my progress and goals I want to achieve this year. I have been taking some statistics and graphing progress which I think is always interesting to look at. I dont have access to machines so these are all MAME-based.

First up, the road to a DK killscreen:
KS achieved 26/8/2014 884,100
New Goal - learn bottom hammer and 1 million points!
1m Achieved 14/8/2015

New Goal - 1.1m. Not sure when I'll start practicing for this

2). Beat the Galaga MAME high score of 5,405,930
Achieved 13/04/2014 - 5,524,600
New Goal - 3 million on 5 life setting
All MAME Galaga records claimed. 5-life PB @ 19/9/2015 4,184,390.

New Goal - 8m Marathon. Current PB 5.7m

3) DK Junior 1m
PB @ 8/10/2015 - 739,400
Haven't played in a while. Will require some de-rusting

4) DK3 1m for trifecta
PB around 300k. Will grind after Junior

Archive:

3)Beat Dean's Stocker score - New PB @ 54,542 as of 25/8/2014
Bubbles - Get at least 250k by the end of the contest. Current best is 192k Finished with bubbles
Time Pilot - Break 700k. Best is ~280k. Not going to play this
Play Mario Bros. - (Maybe) I've decided against this for now :P
Break the WR for Mr Do's Wild Ride. Current PB is 113,689. Primary goal is to beat 132,244. Secondary goal to achieve 150,000. - Shelved for now.
Get a dang Joystick! - DONE OMG
4). Joust 1 million. PB @ 27/8/2014 272,700 - Achieved late 2014 I think

Peace!

First post updated. Goal #2 ticked off the list.

Some stats from my game for those who are interested:

Still losing too many ships for bugger all points. Some more consistency, and a larger score isnt that far away.
95% of the points came from 50% of the ships

Thanks to everyone for the support.
Now on to goal #1 Kreygasm

Love it!

2.4m on TGTS essentially is rather large sir.

Post by: Barra on April 14, 2014, 05:34:21 am
Thanks. Technically its a 6-ship score as I was using ships 5 and 6. But still, 2 ships did basically nothing.
TGTS is something I might start playing soon. Id love to push it up over 3mil and possibly even get close to the arcade record of 4.5mil

Congratulations on your latest DK personal best.

Keep being persistent and you'll start figuring out little methods/tricks to make what seems hard now a lot easier.  :) The blue guys will eventually be quite simple to deal with on the whole.

http://www.twitch.tv/retroup/c/4194811 (http://www.twitch.tv/retroup/c/4194811)
This score can still be beaten. I have been super close to scores around 54,470-54,480.
Maybe this will make Dean play some now?  ;D

Played a LOT of DK over the weekend with minimal success. Going to have a week off and play other stuff.
Also a lot of real life things going on so might not be streaming as much.

Thanks Scott.

No progress in the way of DK lately (or joust for that matter). A few games around 500k but nothing spectacular. Waiting for that next breakthrough game!

Goal #5 has been added.  Kreygasm
An online MAME competition has re-ignited my interest in Mr Do's Wild Ride. I first played this in the TG 2011 Deca comp but had not touched it again until now. The current MAME WR is 132,244. This is my primary goal, with a secondary goal of 150,000. I was reading through some old threads on TG and back in 2004 a bounty had been set up for this title (among numerous other titles) for anyone to score 150,000 or more points. It was not claimed. The arcade record is 130,524 set in 1984.

The game is patternable, but only to a certain extent. Sometimes the game throws impossible cart combinations at you, and sometimes the timing of the carts is different, so you have to be on your toes. This randomisation becomes harder when the carts get faster as you progress through the levels.
It is not one of the well known Mr Do. games, but definitely the one I enjoy most.

Other than that, not much happening. Got exams ( <thefinger> ) coming up in a couple of weeks so that should be fun.  Kappa
Oh and I changed the name of the blog.

Peace!

Hit a new PB in MDWR yesterday - 113,689. This score is 3rd all time for arcade/mame.

Having lots of fun with the crap tournament games. Great to have a break from DK and the shit I usually play.
3 more games announced tomorrow Kreygasm

Hit a new PB yesterday. Came from nowhere, which seems to be a common theme.
627700
Happy with the game (obviously) but had two weak-sauce deaths on 6-5 and 7-2. Need to cut out the crappy stuff and Ill be in business. Its usually just simple mistakes like mis-jumping barrels or turning when I shouldn't. 3rd life went ~50 boards.

As for other games, have been playing Tetris as its part of a comp. Buggered if I know how people can score in the millions on this! Current high is ~127k
Still yet to make it past scene 14 on Wild Ride. If I can make it past this stage, the WR is toast! ;)

Oh and yeah, exams this week BibleThump

This progress on DK is making me think about a million already. I said earlier in the year, nah a killscreen is enough. But I also said a few years ago, nah Ill never go for a killscreen. FailFish.
Got a busy weekend but will try and make time for a couple of games

Yer, that's the way it works.

Way back when, I said I'd stop at 333,300.

With DK, anybody who says "I'm going to stop at 'x' [milestone/score]" is tricking themselves. You stop only when you lose interest.

Just a quick update

Had an absolute BLAST playing in the first (of hopefully many!) IGBY tournament. It was really great to see so much enthusiasm from you guys (and everyone else too, of course)

After pouring in a shit load of effort into the IGBY, it has definitely been time for a break. I must say it has been great not streaming nor hardly playing for the past couple of weeks (I've also taken a break from modding duties at RU)

In saying that, I did spend a couple of hours working out a new strategy for Stocker which has been successful, and I have upped my PB for the 2nd time this year (recorded at RU)
http://www.twitch.tv/retroup/c/4904027 (http://www.twitch.tv/retroup/c/4904027)
I now believe that 54,500 is possible. even 54,550.

See you guys in the next DK open
Peace!

PB hype

DK - 884,100 -  Kill screen achieved. Took about 5/6 months of playing from scratch. Big thanks for everyone's help and support
Stocker - 54,542 - A score I once thought was impossible. New strats did the trick!
Joust - 272,700 - Feel I can do much better on this. Will be grinding on this for a few weeks now

Updated first post with goals. However it is super bleak with only a few games on there. Looking for suggestions from you kind people as to what I should play/learn.

Hype!

Everyone has different tastes in games but if there was one game that I'm not good at that I'd like to be it's Robotron.  That would be my suggestion.

Blog alert.

Been at a bit of a loss recently as to what to play, other than what is in contests. Speaking of contests, seems like there has been a shitload of them recently. Managed to pull off a nice 3rd in Wolf's last contest, and also a 3rd in the last Aussie arcade MGL.

I have almost given up on DK. The game shits me to tears (<Allen>) but with some recent news of a possible Aussie Kong-off (and someone unnamed person beating my score) it has given me some new motivation to keep getting better. Also the last DKOpen, which should be a blast! Tudose hype Kreygasm

Had enough of Joust too. It was nice when some others were playing it (Ben, Paolo) as I could track my progress and talk about the game. Its probably the reason I've lost interest. 700k is decent enough I think. Jry loves it I reckon

I've been having a few games of DK3 recently, although on easy/medium settings. Started it up tonight on hard as apparently thats what we should be playing on. Scored 200k which is pretty laughable but I know I can do better with some practice. Its actually a decent game.

The highlight for me of the last few weeks was definitely the Lunkerthon which can be found here (http://www.twitch.tv/timmell/b/599056903), that was played with my mates Estel, Glen and Phil (thanks Michael for the commentary - its wicked!). If you haven't checked it out, watch my epic fail 1lb Crappie battle (http://www.twitch.tv/barranz/c/5688744) that lasted for over 10 minutes FailFish.

Anyway, christmas coming up so I won't be streaming for a couple of weeks (family etc) but will most definitely be shoutboxing and checking back at TG for the big update.

Peace mates. Happy holidays to all

Dear Diary

Had an awesome time playing Yolympics. Cheers to all that participated. Starfox HYPE. Wouldn't have changed our team for anything, thanks for the massive effort! Individually a 5th overall was pretty solid. Personally the most fun games of the tournament were:

1. Sunset Riders
2. Smash TV (even though I didn't place BibleThump)
3. Mario Bros
Learnt some pac-man too. Unfortunately it made the game worse as it made me realise you have to play over 200 of the same pattern for a split screen FailFish

After some confusion during the past few of months about what I wanted to focus on, I've tried to keep my next couple of goals as simple as possible:

1. Galaga TGTS. (current PB 2,354,450) This is in preparation for hopefully next year me getting a cab and shooting for the arcade records (not fast-fire <mad>)

2. DK Junior (current PB 100,600)
Making very very slow progress at the moment. Once I figure a few things out I don't think it will take too long. That and if the springboard magically fixes its broken ass

3. Popeye

At around this time last year I set goals on DK and Galaga. I'm basically playing the same games FailFish
When I get done with Junior I'll probably move on to DK3. A trifecta badge would be sweet but holy fuck I do not want to play DK

2 games is enough for now. Ill be participating in the AA MGL too, so that will mix things up nicely until IGBY2 starts. Bidding starts at $500 to get me on your team KappaKappaKappa

I have had thoughts about trying to see how many CAG kill screens I can get. Is there a comprehensive list anywhere of games that have kill screens?

Anywho. Keep going good everyone.  Kreygasm

New PB on Junior - 307,900. 2nd man went 250k, bombed out pretty hard. Ended on 9-1. Other deaths were 2-3, 8-4(x2).

Thanks Graham. I'm afraid that ship has been blasted into oblivion. Hopefully one just like it comes along soon ;)

Post IGBY2 thoughts:

Another hugely successful Wolfâ„¢ tournament.

I must admit I didn't like the games list as much as last years but it was filled with titles I wasn't overly familiar with. There was only 1 that I knew well (wild ride) and a few others that I had played in any significant capacity previously (D2K,DK3,Ladybug,Tut) so it made me knuckle down and get on with the grind. Personally overall the tournament was a great success, placing a lot higher than I anticipated. Congrats to The_Pro and the MARP team for showing everyone who is boss! It was in no doubt before the tournament started that they would carve us all a new one. We should work on that for next year. PNS had a great showing too, TIF you are a fucking beast. Get your ass over to MARP and/or TG and start submitting.

I'm incredibly proud of the RU team and the way they hustled. Every one of them put in a massive effort and we pulled through just over 4000 points to secure the bronze medal. QAOP, thanks for your hard work recruiting players. Sawys as always was super strong, and with an unknown and 1st-time-tournament goer krehztim putting in an outstanding performance. You guys rock!

Some thoughts about the games:

Favorite game: Star force. Can't believe I'd never played this before. Cleo - stop playing hard to get; you will be mine someday!
Least-liked: Well, where do I start. There were some absolute shockers this time around. Although nothing as bad as Splatterhouse from last year. I'll give it to Triple punch. Yes this was an RU pick - don't blame me! ;)...maybe QAOP should have stuck to recruiting. Lol. This game is fucking terrible. I'm being 100% honest when I say it doesn't even qualify to be in a Crap Tournament. Its. That. Bad.

Best performance: Aside from the (obvious) Wild Ride and the gold medal I snared (lets face it, I've probably played that game more than anyone else in history), the effort I am most pleased with is Star Force. I didn't manage to get the Cleopatra for 1m bonus, but my 1,255,200 was a solid 7th among a plethora of shmup gods.
Worst performance: Surprise, surprise; Mustache boy! - I pumped my fair share of credits into this and couldn't even manage a poultry 500k. Just one of those games I guess!

Honorable mentions (good or bad):
Star fighter - What a lame excuse for a shmup. I'll be happy to never see this game again.
Turtles - Turn the fucking corner!

Closing thought: IGBY2 was the largest online MAME tournament ever. Just saying that, is awesome. Words can't do justice to my appreciation of so many participating and getting involved. But it wasn't all about quantity....the quality of players we had was next level. Some of the very, very best CAG players around joined in and fought for their team. Some of those scores were  <gasp> Really great to see.
Lets continue to grow this thing!

Other news
Not much else going on. Apparently theres a 1m DK race happening now between 9 or 10 of us? Should be fun :) Implosion pending on you-know-whos channel Kappa (as long as one of us gets there first)
I may or may not have some arcade related news in the near future. Wait and see! <popcorn> <stirpot>

Sorry, this turned out to be much longer than I'd anticipated!
Thanks mates! Long live DKF

1 month anniversary

Its been an eventful month, both on and off the field.

Let me start by saying a massive thanks to Wes for putting up the "Race to 1m" competition. I had such a blast, achieving the milestone was most definitely just a bonus. So much good comradery between everyone, it was really great to see. Obviously a massive thanks to those who were generous enough to donate. We also had someone come out of no-where and showcase his great skills (Mr. X). Glad to have you a part of the community mate. :)

I'm really surprised more people didn't break 1m. I was grinding super hard the first few days and I never expected to be in the first 3, let alone the first 1 (graet englush). Just shows you what some incentive and competition does for the motivation levels. I played around 30 hours over the course of 5-6 days. Progress was actually good improving a little each day. The 1m came straight after a ~700k game where my last life was lost failing an elevator jump FailFish - http://www.twitch.tv/barranz/v/10877904 (http://www.twitch.tv/barranz/v/10877904)

I hope people continue on with their quest for the points. ALL of you definitely have the skills. Just get in a good mindset, and you're there.

I've been on a massive high since my game and so I've gone and set some healthy goals for a few "classic" games:

DK Jr - Goal: 1m, PB: 419k
DK3 - Goal: 1m, PB: 300k
Galaxian - Goal: 200k, PB: 110k
Mario Bros - Goal: 1m, PB: 300k
(there are some others but these are the priority at this stage)

I'll be streaming these games over the next while, as well as some random ones for the Aussie Arcade MGL. (Nibbler <mad>)

Will also be playing/streaming some newer stuff on Steam. Upgraded my graphics card and got some more RAM, so my PC isn't a complete piece of shit any more.

Other stuff?
I'm going to host a contest over christmas/early new year 2016, so keep an eye out for that. You don't have to play anything. <stirpot> <popcorn>

No developments on the PCB news that I alluded to last time.

<3 you all

:)

I'll be busting out some Galaga TGTS this weekend. Hopefully tomorrow but it not, definitely sunday.
First goal is to beat my PB but ultimate goal being the arcade record of 4.5m. Going to be a hard task after playing Galaxian for the past couple of weeks.
Will all be streamed live at www.twitch.tv/barranz (http://www.twitch.tv/barranz)

<3 it

Steering wheel dafk?

Day 1 update: Finally got it working. Had to install some 3rd party beta drivers. Apparently Windows doesn't officially support Xbox One controllers?! Da fkkk????  ::)

Having a hard time adjusting to the opposite left/right move/shoot combo. 1942 seems to be a good game to grind and get used to it. PB on keyboard was about 600k but I can barely get 200k with the stick right now.

I'm surprised to hear that it wasn't natively supported, although maybe it's because it is a 3rd party controller.  My son uses an official microsoft xbox one controller for PC gaming, and even has the ability to change the color of the LED lights on the controller and some other pretty custom functionality when using on a PC.

I never personally used a keyboard much, but found that going from american to jap sticks/buttons required a bit of a learning curve.  I expect the same is true, if not more so, for the transition from keyboard to japanese buttons...especially if you are also familiar with american controls, but have never played on japanese.  Enduring the transition is worth it tho, imho, as jap controls produce much better results in the long run.  Either way, sick stick!

Wasn't used to anything other than a keyboard, so the jap/american buttons things is way over my head :D I've actually been using a PS4 controller for most games lately. Works very well.

Anywho. I was supposed to do an update of a pinball/arcade thing I went to here last month (the system 11 world championships + some other sweet venues), but have been super lazy. Ill throw up a couple of pics for good measure - http://imgur.com/a/lLlYT (http://imgur.com/a/lLlYT)
Heres also a video from the meet - http://www.nzherald.co.nz/national/news/video.cfm?c_id=1503075&gal_cid=1503075&gallery_id=158604 (http://www.nzherald.co.nz/national/news/video.cfm?c_id=1503075&gal_cid=1503075&gallery_id=158604)

Anyway the real purpose of this blog is to let you guys know (if anyone actually reads this!), I'll be attempting to break the Galaga Marathon rekerd (MAME obviously) tomorrow. Stream will be starting around 7/8am my time. Its 8pm now so around 12 hours from this post.....will be streamed at www.twitch.tv/barranz (http://www.twitch.tv/barranz)

Love it <popcorn>

You'll get there mate. Must have messed with your head that PSP was streaming at the same time. What are the chances of you streaming Galaga and you're not even the best player playing live at that point?

Just curious - what does your 4.5 Million equate to on Texas Galaga?

A lot happening since my last update, which I won't care to bore you with so heres my rundown of the crap tourney games :)

Butasan - Fun little game but scoring-wise a little too heavy on the L4 combo. As the compulsory pig game it was a good choice. 5/10
Cloud9 - Junk 'pede rip-off. Terrible game. Perfect for the tournament. 2/10
Ghost Hunter - Good choice making this one of the mystery games. I was SUPER glad full games took about 20 seconds, for that, it gets a point. 1/10
Gypsy Juggler - Actually quite fun and challenging. Didn't like it at first but it grew on me. 4/10
Hunchback Olympics - Only had one 2 hour session on this. Wanted to come back to but didn't have time/couldn't force myself to anyway. Complete garbage, but what else would you expect from a game that features Quasimodo. 3/10
Mad Crasher - Not junk but not great. Scoring becomes sucky. I think they fucked the name up and were supposed to call it Mad Jumper. 3/10
Mr. TNT - Fun but too easy and too short. Eyes anyone?? If I wanted to run the same pattern for hours I'd play pacman (no I wouldn't). 6/10 without patterns, else 1/10
Oriental - Complete and utter rubbish. Fuck beat em ups in general, renegade is better than this. 0/10
Plump Plop - Typical cute paddle game that pretends to be good. Has nothing on Cutie Q. If its cute and Jivey still doesn't like it, you know its a steaming hump. 2/10
Springer - Fun with some decent risk vs reward scoring strategy. Gets quite hard later on (round 20+). Only game I'll be firing up afterwards to test out if it ends or not. Still, a perfect pick for the tournament, you'd be extremely disappointed in yourself if you actually paid to play this back in the day. 6/10
Star Jacker - I hate this as bad as star fighter. Sega, come up with a better ship system, no one wants all of their lives on screen at once, NO ONE!! 2/10
Time Limit - Fuck off. 0/10

Another great tournament with a stellar list of steamers. Good on you Ross for taking one for the team and running this thing, oh and also for ensuring no one else had to play time limit again. You're a true team player for that.

:)
