Chassis Arcade located in Denmark (EU) will host mr. Kim K's Gyruss WR/marathon attempt this weekend..!

Kim "Cannon Arm" Købke is a pleasant, animated, focused and fit man in his 40's with a passion espicially for shoot 'em ups.
A month ago, Feb 22. Kim started an impromptu Gyruss session, ending it just shy of 30 hours, with a neat 40,002,000 pts. Killing of the approx. 220 remaining lives took 15-20 mins.. :)

This time Kim is first aiming for the TG record of 47,024,400 points set by Michael Bangs in 1987.
Sencondly, getting up towards the illusive 100 hour mark..!!

The stream willl be on http://twitch.tv/chassisarcade (http://twitch.tv/chassisarcade)

"""Feb. 23. 2014:
Today ended what my guess is one of the first arcade marathons on Danish soil.
Saturday, February 22 at 11:15 slammed Kim "Kanonarm" Köbke a 2 crown in Gyruss at Chassis Arcade, and an hour or so ago he stopped his game. It was nothing less than 40,002,000 points Sunday at 16.45, which then used about 15-20 min to count extra life. Around 220 lives were back.
The world record is 47,024,400 points set by Michael Bangs in 1987.
This was "just warming" into something bigger. Kim leaves Kanonarman up and return shortly (this time with the camera)
Congratulations to Kanonarm, and all due respect here from
http://killscreen.dk/?p=2240 (http://killscreen.dk/?p=2240) Thank you!"""

Already tought finally I would get a real opponent until I saw the word marathon  :'(

IMO to marathon Gyruss is like watching paint dry or to visit this guys elite forum ---->   <Pigger>  ROFL

Anyway nice to see someone besides me playing Gyruss. I will definitely check the stream for his first 5 ships to see how much he would have scored under TGTS.

Marathons are awesome and I've wondered why someone hasn't taken this game on yet.  I'll tune in when I can.  Will be interesting to see how high this score can be pushed.

KIG,

Is the difficulty setting different under TGTS than the marathon settings or same?

No both marathon and TGTS use level 6 now.

The old marathon record from Michael Bangs on the other hand plus the older TGTS records were played on level 5 (average) according to Mark Longridge site http://cubeman.org (http://cubeman.org)

Don't know when they changed the level of difficulty from 5 to 6 but I played mine already on level 6 so I'm sure it was more than 3 years ago.

KIG666: What's your TGTS score? Don't know Kim's score, but come by and ask him (and of course see how much he get's on the first 5 ships) Think he would love to talk to another Gyruss player, and maybe some day he'll go for that score as well.

And regarding Gyruss being a boring marathon game to watch, I read some guys on MARP talking about the same thing. And I can see what you mean. But to me ex. Q*Bert, Missile Command and Armor Attack wasn't that much fun to watch either, but still think those marathons are great achievements, and have big respect for those gamers. I think that marathons are as much to see how long can someone play before their brain/body start to screw up.

Barra: Thought about maybe submitting to recordsetter or something like that (but havent checked out how that works), but then agan I don't really think Kim cares. I think it's enough for him to know that the arcade gaming community knows about it. If someone can track down Michael Bangs that would be fucking awesome.

It's not that I would be totally against marathons I just don't like the fact that a marathon has usually no real rules.

Lives should be limited even for a marathon, at least for my taste. For a game like Gyruss 20 lives would be more than enough.

It also should not be allowed to go away from the cab. The game should end straight if you stop to play the game. A missed bonus round ok but stop to play for minutes no thanks that's pointless in my eyes.

All those crutches like toilet breaks, snacks, energy drinks and even little naps in between not my thing.

Guess you already figured out that I'm not really THE marathon fan  ROFL

I would prefer something like the 24 hours of Gyruss or any other marathonable game. Like the 24 hours of le mans for example.

Would be interesting to see how far someone could go in just 24 hours without any break. The winner would be the guy that scored the most millions with the less killed ships.

Sounds much more fun than just a marathon without rules but hey that is just my opinion. I know many ppl like the marathon tracks so each to their own :)

Even if marathons are not my thing I will still check the stream tomorrow cause I love to see someone playing Gyruss on the dedicated cab.

Haven't seen a dedicated Gyruss cab in ages  :'(

My current record on TGTS is 9,460,950
My best one ship score on hardest settings ( level 8 ) is 4,217,250

That's also fair enough :) I see you are from Germany! Come to Copenhagen and have a 24 hour Gyruss battle with Kim! The machine that's at the arcade is his, but he actually has another one at home.

Denmark vs. Germany - who will win?  <Walter>

Will let him know about your TGTS score, and will update with his score after 5 men. Do you know about this european forum: http://www.dragonslairfans.com/smfor/index.php (http://www.dragonslairfans.com/smfor/index.php) ? Lots of people from Germany, Netherlands etc. think you should be able to find someone with a Gyruss near you.

9 million on TGTS niceeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee KIG. I got 1.5 million after starting my first man at 1 million+ and then just had a huge brain fart and lost 3 men practically back to back and just haven't tried again :/

40 million in 30 hours is really not to shabby. Thats like 1.33 million an hour. 222 men to kill off when he quit and see it only too 15-20 minutes. Is he playing non-stop because you really dont have time to nap. I'm curious where this goes because I will start getting serious about doing this and also thinking about Galaga too.

Copenhagen is unfortunately not what I would call just around the corner. Maybe for my next holiday who knows.

About the dragonslairfans forum, yeah I know this site might actually be the better choice to find a Gyruss cab near germany.

Only problem could be that many ppl have the konami pcb in their cabs and TG only tracked the centuri version for both arcade tracks.

Funny thing is Michael Bangs WR was played on the Venus bootleg so I still wonder why they forced ppl to use the century version if the official marathon WR score was not even played on original hardware.

Anyway if I would have to choose between marathon and TGTS I would always pick TGTS since imo this is the way more challenging track but like I said before others might think different and prefer the marathon track.

Like JCHarrist already suggested, tell Kim about the forum here, I would enjoy to talk about Gyruss with him and besides that he already plays Donkey Kong so he has no other choice  :P

Once you start to play DK you belong to the DK community here in other words you are property of this forum  ROFL

Dan

Actually there is enough time to make breaks. My last TGTS record of 9,4M would have given me almost 13 minutes to rest so enough time to eat something go to the toilet etc....

Either a break every 10M or a bigger break at the time before you reach the 255 max ship limit to avoid the 0 ship disaster haha

Denmark vs. Germany - who will win?  <Walter>

This should happen!

This already happened and germany won ROFL

Well not on Gyruss but on the arcade screenshot quiz on a german arcade shop.

(http://i1194.photobucket.com/albums/aa367/KIG666/sq.jpg) (http://s1194.photobucket.com/user/KIG666/media/sq.jpg.html)

I knew his name sounded familar.

Watched until now and his 5 ship score was pretty good. A bit over 2,2M so he for sure plays not half-assed haha

He is for sure good enough to break the record from Bangs cause like he plays right now he will be able for short breaks or even one or two *longer* breaks so 47M+ should be doable imo  8)

Would be cool to have a face-to-face Gyruss battle, Kim is up for it! If you're not to fancy, I have a nice couch you can crash on..

What is going on with the Arcade Screenshotquiz? Don't get it :)

And we're having trouble with our audio unfortunately, and yes we have turned sound off on the stream, and even on the pc, but still there's an echo/crappy sound. Maybe it's because the arcade is packed this saturday, lots of people enjoying arcade games and pinball. Let's see later tonight when the place close if the problem is still there. Tune in and enjoy the gameplay nonetheless

Yeaj I meant you can't take a break long enough to sleep but bathroom or some eating breaks sure. 40 hours really isnt that long to stay awake and play since he is going for max points. Should be able to do it. I'll work out something for next year and try and play for 50 - 60 hours. Heck ill go for 100 hours and just be a psycho!!! 100 hours on this game would reallllllllllly be nuts.  BibleThump

The stream started fucking up and having black scan lines over the screen, but thanks to Michael and Svavar (via phone) we got it working again. The stream might have been down a few min, but like the the first time, we recorded the missing stream with a cellphone, and will put the videos up tonight or tomorrow.

What is going on with the Arcade Screenshotquiz? Don't get it :)

Like I said I don't enjoy playing with unlimited lives, just not my thing so I don't believe I will go for a marathon anytime soon.

1 and 5 ship tracks thats my kind of stuff, love it  <Allen>

I immediately lose the fun after I lose my 5th ship. It's burned so deep into my mind I automatically stop the game sometimes even before I lose the 5th ship if I'm not really happy with the average ship score lol

My long time goal for Gyruss is to hit 5M with one ship on hardest settings and 12M on TGTS with 5 ships.

I secretly hope that this marathon will be enough for Kim to say lets stop marathon and give TGTS a try haha

Anyway If I ever visit Copenhagen I will for sure check Chassis Arcade and try to break my records there on the real Gyruss cab  8)

About the screenshotquiz, I just tought I've read his name and initials before and I was right.

It was from the screenshot quiz here http://www.arcadeshop.de/screenshotgame.php?explain=true&int=1 (http://www.arcadeshop.de/screenshotgame.php?explain=true&int=1)

He was on first place for a while so I remembered me on his name.

Pretty nice quiz if you like classic arcade games. Unfortunately it stopped after 1240 points, only black screens and questions that you can't answer anymore.

A real Killscreen  <Kuh> haha  but that was to expect after all they use the *How high can you get* DK screen between the levels hahaha

THANKS to everyone of you who tuned in, spread the word and helped out with the stream. Promise we will be more prepared if we at some point will stream again :) Kim really appreciated it, and I think he was surprised about how many people cared. Will try to get him in here at some point, and maybe write a few words.

Michael Bangs score from 1987: 47,024,400 points
Kim "Kanonarm" Köbke's score: 62,200,250 points after approx 49hours16min

You can find some pictures (will keep updating) and info about the marathon here: http://killscreen.dk/?p=2304 (http://killscreen.dk/?p=2304)

Check out some pictures here from Kim's unofficial WR attemps in 1942 and Flying Shark (played another place back in 2005) http://www.playright.dk/museum/galleri/verdensrekord-i-1942 (http://www.playright.dk/museum/galleri/verdensrekord-i-1942)

Oh and Kig666, if you ever plan on coming to CPH, let us know so we can put up an event. And FYI about the quiz, if you add all the points from Kim (EXA) he would take the lead. Denmark: 1 - Germany: 0. :) He talked about might try getting better at TGTS at some point. If you have any tips I think he would appreciate it, he was impressed with your score.

Watch a video of him beating the WR here (approx 19min in) WARNING. Lots of screaming in the arcade, so might turn volume down: Not a valid vimeo URL
Media in Denmark can't stop writing about Kim and Chassis Arcade. CAG is hot right now, and it's 1983 all over again over here. Tonight Kim and the owners of Chassis Arcade will be on "Go'aften Danmark" - which is a danish tv program that is broadcasted all over Denmark (sound like we are a big country, but that's not really the case)

Never surrender  <Billy>

If I ever get the chance to visit Copenhagen I will for sure contact you guys before to arrange something. Would love to play on a dedicated Gyruss cab again  :)

I really hope Kim plays TGTS Gyruss from now on. He has the marathon record so time for something new  <blinky>

He actually has what it takes to get good with 5 lives as well. He can play the game for a very long time so he just needs to focus more on the mind part.

Playing save but still at a good pace. If he can score 2,2 on TGTS he can for sure score much higher with more practice.

1 life attempts help a lot. They are actually the key for a big TGTS score. I don't think someone will ever have a perfect balanced 5 life game so you need 2-3 great ships to score big.

I bet once he gives TGTS a serious try he will enjoy it a lot.

Great to hear that Kim's WR hasn't slipped under the radar in Copenhagen. The CAG scene needs way more publicity especially here in europe.

Great to see that the CAG scene is still alive in Copenhagen, wish I could say the same about Germany :(

Germany = arcade desert, not much hope.... but hope dies last I guess.

Anyway wish you guys the best of luck with your arcade, hopefully other ppl in europe will follow and help to re-animate the CAG scene in europe.
