Title: How many people have hit a million on hardest settings?
Post by: homerwannabee on March 17, 2014, 03:42:05 pm
I of course have done this, and my highest score is 2.4 million, which is nowhere near as high as any of my other Donkey Kong 3 scores on lower settings.  The reason being is the game is much, much, much harder on these settings.  The room for error is extremely small on these settings.

In fact I believe it's so hard on these settings that it may actually be harder to hit 1 million for some people than it would be for Donkey Kong Junior

So I wonder who has accomplished this?  Has Ben Falls or Steve Wagner done this?  Has Dwayne Richard or Shawn Cram accomplished the feat?   I saw a post where Steve Wagner said he was practicing the game on these settings before he did Battle of the Arcades.  It's seems to have helped him as he got 1.3 million in one hour on one lower setting, and thus got first place.

The real question would be how many people have even PLAYED it on the hardest settings shooting for a score? I havent gotten a million on easy yet so i cant say :D

George, I just realized that we have no DK3 highscore board.  :o Why is this? Maybe, if you have time, you should start a thread with, say, the top 10 scores for each difficulty. I, personally, think we really need a DK3 HSB.

At the moment I am not in the greatest position to start such a list.  Maybe in a couple of months or so I could do such a thing. :)

P.S. You're right, we really should have a high score list for DK3.

I haven't tried the hardest setting yet, but I did get 1M on my first try on difficulty 3.  I'll give it a go sometime.

Well how did it go?  And did Steve Wagner get a million on hardest settings?  My guess is he did, but I am not too sure.

This game sucks!  Kappa

I'm still trying for a million on Easy and just getting to 500k most of the time. BAH....

You may think the game sucks, but you don't suck at this game.  averaging 500k is really good! 8)

I hated the game as a kid - they had one at a local swimming pool.  But after playing it for several months leading up to BotA, I decided that it's pretty fun actually.  I'm glad it was on the game list, forced me to learn a new, enjoyable game.  For that million, not so sure, haven't don't better than 350k on easy, but maybe after playing a while longer...

Even after you get a million, there is so much to refine.

Actually, you can get a million and still be an extremely mediocre player, which is where I would rank myself.

With the super spray, you basically get a free pass through one and a half boards per loop (after the 24th board, and 2+ boards up until then), which makes up an enormous chunk of the million. So you only really have to survive and bughunt through one and a half boards per loop, and even then there are enough points available to die up to twice for the game to hand you enough extra guys to still tread water.

Without the super spray, I rarely can get through a single blue or grey board without dying at least once. Shit just gets too crazy with all the worms and Kong slipping off the rope, no matter how hard you try to keep all those plates spinning. I can only pass the boards because everything resets after I die and the crowd is thinned out.

Also, the queen bees are just hell. UGGGHH. If I have one complaint about the design of this game it's that the hardest, most teeth-gnashingly agonizing problem you face is not the effects of an enemy attacking, but it dying.

Though the bullets are certainly capable of delightful little surprises too. It was extremely evil of them to make it so that the bullets are still "live" after you clear the board. Bullet-related shenanigans have caused some property damage here.

Cool another DK3 player! 8)

I would say the first priority is to kill the insects.   Of course easier said than done.

Also to ChrisP.  Should have responded sooner.  I only say a 500k game is good because Retro Uprising for years had a high score that that was lower than 500k.

When I say a good score, I am not saying compared to people who take the game somewhat seriously.  I am talking about compared to the casual player of the game who plays it once in awhile.  Compared to the casual player you definitely have a good score.
