Title: Streaming my 1,061,700 tomorrow
Post by: hchien on October 19, 2013, 11:28:32 am
Corey asked if I could stream my 1,061,700 game (my first WR game) of 2/26/10 for historical purposes.  Just to put this game into context:

Billy Mitchell's (arcade) world record of 1.050M stood for ~2.5 years at that point.  I think a lot of that had to do with the 1M live rule which pretty much ended the back and forth rivalry between Billy and Steve.  And at the same time it stunted the new generation of players from coming forward.  The 2nd gen players were starting to reach 1M.  Dean had done it in MAME already.  Tim and Scott Kessler had done it on Arcade but at home and with no ref present.  The MAME WR was 1.073M (someone double check that).   I had just gotten my first 1M a few months earlier in 9/09 and almost simultaneously the 1M live rule was lifted (maybe in 11 or 12/09).  This was my golden ticket-- everything was falling into place.

That particular day it was snowing heavily.  By heavily, I mean up to my waist in snow.  I actually tried to go to work, but my car was buried.  Needless to say, I called in sick and played DK =).  I seem to remember that whole day was frustrating.  I had trouble getting games started.  So I would take naps in between attempts to shake off the frustration and to catch up on sleep.  It was getting close to midnight so it was going to be my last attempt for the day and of course... bingo.

When I broke the record, I was extremely nervous for several reasons.  First while I was leeching one of the rivet boards, I had that hardware audio gate glitch occur.  It was the first time I had seen/heard of that glitch and was afraid it would disqualify the game.   Secondly, I had no idea if I was doing the post-game verification correctly.  I don't think anyone had submitted a game under the "new" rules yet and I was basically going through the rules line by line.  I think one of the funniest parts of the video is when I looked at the label on the CPU and I said "Z80.....A ??"  I later learned that Z80A is what it's supposed to say.  TG asked me to keep things hush about the game at the time, but I think that time is long gone.

Anyhow I don't know exactly what time I'll stream.  I'll probably do it during one my breaks, maybe sometime in the afternoon.  I can shoutbox/bump this thread if people are interested.

Awesome Hank. I'll be watching. You should stream all of your WR games. ;)

The MAME WR was 1.073M (someone double check that).

That is correct, Hank.  The 1,073,000 MAME record was achieved on 11/30/09.

Far be it from me to dash someone's hopes.  As you wish, Jason.   :)

Some additional background info.  I realized some people do not know what I meant by "1M live rule".  From about 2007 - end of 2009, any arcade score over 1M would not be accepted by TG unless it was performed live in front of a senior TG ref (no recorded tighty whitey scores).  There were a lot of conspiracy theories floating at the time.  People thought TG was just trying to keep Billy on top since the rule was implemented while Billy had the WR.  Others thought it was to prevent any newcomers from submitting a top score (reinforce the Steve vs Billy rivalry).  I often refer to this period as the dark period since many scores and players were lost during this time (most notably Tim and Scott Kessler's 1M games).  Fortunately for me, the rule was changed just as I was peaking.  It may have delayed me a little but not much.  It did cause my first 1M game to not be fully recorded.  I did not record at the time because I felt it was pointless (TG wouldn't accept it anyway).  Imagine during your first 1M game, debating whether you should end it at 999,900 so TG would accept it.  In fact, that's what I was debating during my 2nd 1M game.

If I'm not mistaken, it's on this game that you sing some Beyonce very loud? Someone has to make an highlight of that  ;).

That was actually during my 1.09M at Funspot (I believe).  In the hopes of finding internet stardom (ahem Justin Bieber), I will stream that at some point.  I'd like to take this opportunity to remind everyone that Justin Bieber is Canadian.

So as to not disappoint anyone, this game contains the original "NEW WORLD WRRRREEECCUUURRRDDD".

Nevermind, it was on your 1,068,000 game. I do have the tape of that game, so I know, mwahaha. But don't worry, I didn't watch the whole game, I wouldn't handle watching a whole poser pace run. Kappa

Vince, we started playing DK about the same time... when I had the 1.061M WR on arcade (Feb '10) remind me what your high score was...  oh yeah, it was an 809K killscreen.  /close enough

Hank, when will you finally realize that people only care about the one that has the lowest kill screen? Having the lowest kill screen requires A LOT more skills, and I proved it 4 years ago with my 809k.

I know you wished you were as good as me to be bad, but it looks like you're only good at being good, which is bad if you want to be bad, since being good cannot make you be bad, even if you're good at being good to be bad. That's too bad for you mate.

Vincent philosophy strikes again.

Hey Hank,

Any chance of highlighting the game after the broadcast, in case I need to go back and check a few numbers?  With an arcade streaming setup, it's not always easy to identify the digits 2, 3, 5, 6, 8, and 9.
