Title: What Is Your Goal For WCQ #3? EDIT: OR By the Kong Off 3?
Post by: ChrisP on September 02, 2013, 12:42:32 am
For me, I hope to break 950 during the weekend. I don't think I'm quite ready for a million yet, and am not entirely comfortable playing at that pace. Not because I don't think I have the raw skill to do it, but playing out a full million-point game is hard for me purely in terms of mental stamina.

A survival pace kill screen used to be draining, but now it doesn't tire me like it did two years ago. Eventually I'll get there with a million, because that's the way the evolution seems to go with DK (the better you get, the less energy it takes), but it's still a distance away.

I'm not so worried about holding onto the wildcard spot. Corey is now going, so he'll take his, and Ben still hasn't decided yet for sure, which means I'm still in the red zone. I want it, but then again, if I have to play on Friday at the KO, that sounds like fun too.

What are your plans?

I plan on killscreening before then, and then maybe putting up a solid 900k score for the WCQ#3. I don't have any real expectations of being a wildcard, but I might as well give it a shot.  8)

300K @ 1m pace is my goal since by then I will hopefully have a KS

A double hammer kill screen would be nice... I'm not going to be thinking too much about the pace

As always I need to get that one million. To be honest, I still don't feel safe with my 964K game. I think that I am in a learning period and so I am not playing so well lately.

You're in either 5th, 4th, or 3rd position depending on who does or doesn't take the spot, so 4, 5, or 6 people would have to beat 965K in the last tourney for you to lose yours.

There are 6 players at most left in the field (going to KO) who are even *capable* of 965K, and only one (Ross) who has actually gotten that score. So basically all six would have to ace the last tourney, and five of them would be substantially increasing their PBs. Very, very unlikely...

I said it at the outset and I still think it's possible that, once you factor in the no-shows, a basic 850K kill screen will probably hold up for a spot.

I hope my goal might be getting a 300k game or better!  I'm definately not aiming too big!  :-).  But if something or anything special happens then it does!  :-).  I was also hoping to maybe get a prize!  :-).  I've been hoping to get my very first ever online prize in an online tournament!  I've never won anything before and I would love to tell all my DK friends out there in the community too and all my friends and co-workers at Walmart where I work that I won something from playing!  :-).  Those are my goals right now!  :-)

Let's open this up a little.

How about goals for WCQ #3 and/or "by November 15th" (the Kong Off 3).

I've heard, for example, that a certain Check Man world record holder is hunting for 1.17...

900K before WCQ#3
950k during WCQ#3
1m before KO3
1m at KO3

Let's hope I get the time (and sleep! ;) ) in to pull these off! School and life seems to be getting in the way.

Shhhh... It's a secret.

I do feel 1.17M is within my reach.  However, I'm not factoring in fatigue so 1.16M is perhaps a more realistic target.  Not sure I'll be able to pull it off before KO3 though.

Don't worry Hank, it seems that Dean's 1,186,700 is still a secret to the general public, and so I think you have nothing to worry about. ;)

Yea that is strange.  I mean every time the DK arcade WR is broken, every news channel covers the story...heck there was news coverage for Steve Wiltshire going to the KO2 as a wildcard...but nothing at all for Dean's latest score.

I don't think the general public even knows what MAME is.  I also don't think Dean nor I play for publicity.

How many of you have had conversations with people where you get the following response: "Donkey Kong?  What's that?"  Or even better: "Isn't Pokémon for kids?"  Point being, if you want publicity you shouldn't be playing DK.

I have a lofty goal of going from 702k to 1.04m+ by KO3. Will it happen? Not likely but I'll try :)

I think I know what Mr. Riley is winky-winkying about!

I'm going to put something up about Dean's game within the next couple of days, but I can't write worth a damn these last few weeks.

Dean should've gone to Oprah for his 1,186,700.

You have to be careful to not mistake the occasional 2 minutes of drive-by mainstream gawking at competitive DK for people actually caring who has the highest score. Because they don't. They're tickled by the idea that DK is played competitively, and that's what the point of the stories are. Nobody outside of the community actually cares about the state of the competition or who has the highest score(s) at the moment, except for those who just finished watching KoK and want to check in and see where Billy and Steve are since the movie.

Competitive DK is interesting to people, in a "wht da?" sort of way. You have the nostalgia/familiarity element, where everybody remembers the game from their childhood and throwing in quarters to play it for five minutes at a time, and, hey, weird, look at that, now you have these guys reviving this now-ancient game in competitions, going for hours on a quarter.

Hank made the news the first time he broke the record because the movie was somewhat recent and very popular, and Hank is interesting because he doesn't really fit the profile of a typical gamer. So it was "wow, this doctor came out of nowhere and beat the guys from the movie!" and that was the angle.

I don't know the circumstances, but I would say that Steve got on his local TV because they saw a fun human-interest story in it. (Actually, if ANY of us going to the KO wanted to push our local news we'd stand a pretty good chance of getting in there - DK/KO really works as a cool curiosity because of that universal familiarity.)

But again, you have to understand the true nature of public interest in DK and how/why it gets attention when it does. I'll put it this way: there were dozens of mainstream stories on the Kong Offs. How many stories were there about the results of the Kong Offs? The story isn't "who won the Donkey Kong tournament", the story is that a Donkey Kong tournament happened.

Dean beating himself by 20K (on an emulator) is not something anyone in the real world would even understand, let alone have the slightest bit of interest in reading about. To be a story, there'd need to be something else to it.

August I was going for the record, but most of the time was spent trying to learn how to up my pace and I feel like I could make a run at it.  But at this point since I am the bottom of the top 12, I will probably just go for 1.04 to secure my spot.  If I do that soon I will be back to going for the record again.

Yeah, I actually have a card of a local news reporter in my wallet that I once talked with at Rusty Quarters about DK and the competitive CAG scene for over an hour. He was pretty interested in doing a story on me at the time, and he wanted me to call him next time I tried to qualify for the KOs so that he could do a news-piece on it. However, I'm gonna hold off and call him once I do something more extraordinary. ;)

I have a lofty goal to be on the DKF HSL by KO3. I don't care if I'm the last score, I just want that 300K! I think I can achieve it as long as I make a good effort to play most days of the week.

I like your chances, Katie.  Given where your high score is at the moment, you've been battling the most difficult barrel boards in the game.  Once you reach Level 05, you'll have a much easier time dealing with those stages.  The normal barrels are more controllable at that point (you can steer them out of your way), and the wild barrels are predictable.

You'll face a more difficult challenge with the L05+ conveyors and rivets.  The fire objects move much more quickly, and you'll encounter screens where they stubbornly refuse to cooperate.  However, unless you experience a run of horrible luck, it shouldn't be too bad.  Be patient, and don't panic.

Good luck!

I guess so, albeit an unintentional one.

I actually had to google "hitchhiker's guide" and "don't panic" to discover the connection.

There, it's out in the open:  I'm a science fiction poser.   8)

I had to google 'The Neuromancer'.  Another science fiction poser right here... and to make me more of a poser, I have to admit that I've never read 'The Hitchhiker's Guide To The Galaxy', but I did play the Infocom Text Adventure game as a teenager.

I actually only read Neuromancer because Sonic Youth had mentioned numerous times that their record Daydream Nation was heavily influenced by it.

So I'm technically still a Sci-Fi poser.  On my bike I suppose.....
