Donkey Kong Online Open: Kong Off 3 Wild Card Qualifier #1 and WCR #3 ***FINAL*** Results
Eric Tessler and John Salter would like to thank everyone for participating! Here are the prize money winners, final standings and the top 8 KO 3 qualifiers (so far). There are 2 more tournaments to go between now and the Kong Off 3. The next one will be announced shortly, so start practicing and get ready!

Thanks for the update! It won't stay that way though. Last year my score would only be good for 8th place by the end of the WCR #2. Besides, we have two more of these tournaments to get 8th or higher overall. I will have to focus on two hammer games (1M) from now on. No other way to get another 100K just running boards. I am coming for you 1 Million. Maybe not today, but soon, and hopefully during one of these tournaments.

I got 627,200 which I guess is good for second at the moment (good for probably the next 20 minutes anyway).
One single quarter drop and I almost beat my best of 10 hours worth of awful games last time!
I'm on fire, I feel the Donkey Kong Surge, but now I have to go hang out with people until tonight. BLARGH, life!

Well this sucks complete and total ass.
I was all ready to jump in again and shove death down Kong's throat when I noticed that the laptop from which I stream was on battery power, even though it was plugged in. Uh oh.
Long story short, my freaking power supply chose TONIGHT to die, and I have no other computer set up from which to stream. Getting that together would take hours. So, I'm out! 6 hours to go, and I'm out.
Brian Allen, did you stick a gummy substance in my electronics??
This is totally weak.
Oh well, there's always next time.

Wow... I didn't except Dean to kill screen that low, honestly. haha. Good job Dean, I wish I could've watched the game, good job! Pretty much the same kind of score that you got at the Kong Off 2. What kind of strategy were you using to get that score? Probably a safe bottom hammer without any grouping (or very small grouping/leeching)?
And Jeff Wolfe and Corey: Wow! Good job Jeff for you 1m game (in my book, that's a 1m game). Welcome to the club! That's amazing mate ;-).

Vincent, Thanks for your kind words. Yeah, almost had back to back killscreens. That would have been nice. I started the game just running boards until level 5. Just to warp and get playing. But then I had a stupid spring death on level 5 and was going to restart. I decided that since I had not played bottom hammer in a while since I was practicing with running boards in prep for the tournament that I would just practice with that game before I got a good one going. That was my mentality through most of the game. I lost my third man on level 12. So I kept playing with my last man all the way to the killscreen with double hammer. So I used top hammer only from levels 1 - 4 and then again from level 18 through 21 I think. Once I got to level 18 or so and realized that I was about 20K or so behind pace and that I would not get a million I decided just to run boards and make the best out of it, increasing both my personal best and my qualifying score for the tournament. And it worked! So, I am hoping that my 964,500 score will secure me a place in the top 8 overall in these three tournaments.

Thanks Vincent! Great observation -- yes, I was using the same "tournament strategy" that I used at the KO2. I played the first 8 Levels pretty aggressively with 2 hammers (but not max pressing), then, beginning on Level 9 I switched to top hammer only, throwing in minimal grouping mostly just to try to set up a better top hammer. I had one extra guy to cash in at the end (at the KO2 I had two extra guys to cash in).
I probably won't have time to play again except maybe just before the contest ends although it's cool to see that it's been extended. Are you or Jeff playing at all? How about Hank? Did Ross play last night?
It's a bummer, I watched some other people streaming last night but I've been having trouble with the chat so I don't think I ever showed up on anyone's viewer list. Ah well. Good luck everyone!

Trust me, MAME will be included. Look what happened at the last kong off 2: The two ONLY mame players won 1st and 2nd. MAME has proven to create champion, and I will highly recommend Jourdan/Richie to include mame also for ko3, otherwise I'll be extremely pissed.

I agree, but if TG doesn't get REAL clear on this, and soon, people on all sides are gonna be mad. #10-#12 (or whatever) arcade will be mad, MAME players who beat the top 12 arcade will be mad, etc.
Ben, for example, will not be able to qualify if they don't accept MAME. He doesn't have a machine. Robbie, Corey, etc. etc. Lots of MAME people have a shot at the top 12 between now and November. And Phil just got in!
Like I said in another thread, Jourdan had me look over the Kong Off 3 announcement and I'm not signing off on that until I get definite answers. And if he and Richie say "arcade only," I am gonna tell them exactly what kind of shitstorm is going to blow up if they do! They're not as close to the DK community as we are and don't realize some of the politics. I don't want those two to get pitchforked.

Cray Cray isnt it Chris. The scores are just insane. I love when it says I'm playing at 1.08 pace but i just cannot get deep into the game (but then i have enough trouble with that JRTFBDN) :D
Still was 1.08 "pace" even remotely done even 10 years ago? Man so much has changed. It's nuts to say "Dean slowed down and played it 'safe' when and ONLY got 1.086" That is sick. I think he said he did Top Hammer only after Lvl 8 with just some semi-serious grouping at the top.
I did notice that grouping skills are necessary for big games. Jeff W, Dean, Ross and Dave are all doing well at it. I made a few changes and got a 13,900 Lvl 6 Barrel Stage with a really weak Bottom Hammer so WOW. Average 12,500 a barrel stage and BOOM your close to that 1.1m all day.
Mind boggling while I still try for a KS....

Just hit 430,000 the first game today. I havent emailed it yet bc I havent stopped the stream. Ive been having connection issues so I am going to keep going til 11:30 before I submit.

lol thanks guys. ill have 1.1m soon i think. i played this 1.05 with safe strats. especially on the barrel boards. no grouping/a lot of forcing barrels down on the 3rd platform. i had a ridiculous amount of free passes on the conveyors. 1 barrel death. 2 rivets deaths. killscreen

You know I'm quite upset here .. With all this extra Time Added People are beating me left and right.
I could'nt do anything with any of this extra time becouse have a job that requires i work on Sunday.

I do not mind the better players being in this event.. But they are allready in the KO3 Event .
So i hope it's the top 12 that are not allready in the KO3 Event .
I quite happy with my game yestarday with limited time becouse of Twitch Problems.

You know I'm quite upset here ..
Brian, there is no prize for anything but 1st, 2nd, and 3rd, you didn't win a bounty that got snatched by someone else, and 640K would not have held up over the next two tournaments as one of the top 8 wildcard scores.
So, you lost nothing but a few mostly-meaningless notches on the scoreboard for a one-day free tournament. It's not worth having bad feelings about. :)

Great games for everyone. Sucks I couldn't get any games in but my weekend was busy with other things. Maybe I'll have a free weekend on one of the other tournaments.

Guys, this tourney was fantastic!
Although I didn't participate, I watched way too much, it was a blast and I saw some amazing games.
Watching Mitch and Vincent chasing (I think then) Mr Tudose's 12,500 level 1-1 high score was pretty funny especially when Vincent started getting bored and suddenly a large bicep appeared haha!!
Fast Eddie, well played Jon I didn't see you're big game but I saw most of the others. Well done man, you were playing really well and a great finishing position.

You have to think about a few things:
- The 12 players who are already out of the running (the top 12).
- Qualifiers who actually end up getting into the top 12 by the time of the KO3, thus freeing up a spot, and the player they pushed out not playing or qualifying in these tourneys. I'd say we have two already: Phil is now in the top 12 (or he damn well better be), and we all know Ben is gonna go bananas and get 1.1 or something by November.
- All the people who will technically qualify, but will NOT be going to Denver and are just playing these for fun. It's my understanding, for example, that Corey won't be at KO3.
Either way, even if you don't qualify in these tourneys and you have to start at the live qualifier on Friday at the KO3 itself, a whole lot of players (20 to be exact) will be "upstream" and out of your way, along with a bunch of other DK beasts who won't even make it to Denver. So the live qualifier will be quite a bit softer than the online qualifiers. And even *then* there are still 8 spots to move on to Saturday. That's a lot of spots.
Theoretically, you only have to be the 28th best DK player to get to Saturday, minus all the people who won't even be coming to Denver.
I'm actually really looking forward to the Friday match and seeing how it goes down. It's gonna be the mid-level guys' time to shine.

It was nice to see Dave playing today, and a smart move on his part to put up a very strong score.
Mike G says that he'll submit his score, and if Phil submits his score (assuming Richie and Jourdan don't say "arcade only" and cause a riot/mutiny), it would put Dave in 12th, meaning that he is now on the chopping block.
If somebody beats Dave, and he doesn't improve between now and November, his 934K is a lock for one of the 8 pre-qualifier wildcards, so he now has insurance.
In other words, naysayers aside (even I was skeptical), the "open" format for this weekend's tournament actually fulfilled its purpose perfectly!
Somebody better get in touch with Kyle Goewert...

Yeah, it's getting a little too close for comfort. I have to remember TG will be using my 1.015M game also. Funny thing is if I finished yesterday's game at 1.04M, I wasn't TG recording, I was just streaming for the tournament. So wouldn't have helped my cause much.
I'll probably back off on 1.1M attempts now and shoot for 1.07-1.08M just to get a spot back up. Yesterday's game at 1.04M pace was very comfortable, because of going staight for the top hammer without grouping. Not that grouping is that uncomfortable, but adds so much time to the game.

I'd also like to say thanks to John and Eric! Things got a little crazy when Twitch went down, but everybody stayed positive and supportive of them and the competitors (for the most part). Let's do it again in a couple months!

Very cool tournament as usual. I am just glad I was able to put up a score that landed me in the top half of the competition. It took me getting a really, really good game though for me pulling that off.

Yeah Great job George. I thought I would beat my PB too as I had 2 lives left on 15-3 but then choked big time. Died on 2 barrel boards on 15-3 and 16-5 I believe :'(
I am starting to think its a little bit of nerves when I get towards the end. Will be interesting to see how it all goes. I'm probably just going to be playing 1.05+ pace from here on out and see what happens. I still feel a KS is any day away but with all the glitches on my laptop (and quite frankly me being stupid way too many times) just not sure when that will be. Could be tonight could be Feb 2015. Grrrrr

Sorry for the delay in verifying. I had an intense weekend with work and the tournament. Only a few hours of sleep total. I tried to put up a more respectable score at the zero hour, and crashed hard shortly after the tournament was over. Total body shut down.
I’m very doubtful the current final list will change, since Eric and I are usually on the same page with this stuff. I'll review and verify this evening when I get home. Most of them I've already verified during the tournament. The rest won’t take long.

I think Chris meant 28th overall, not 28th in this WCR.

First off, congrats to Dean and thanks to the organizers even though I wasn't able to participate. Good to see a few PBs being set.
Mike G says that he'll submit his score, and if Phil submits his score (assuming Richie and Jourdan don't say "arcade only" and cause a riot/mutiny), it would put Dave in 12th, meaning that he is now on the chopping block.
If somebody beats Dave, and he doesn't improve between now and November, his 934K is a lock for one of the 8 pre-qualifier wildcards, so he now has insurance.
In other words, naysayers aside (even I was skeptical), the "open" format for this weekend's tournament actually fulfilled its purpose perfectly!
Yes, this was exactly why I was advocating an open WCR#3. The bottom few spots (not just Dave) are NOT secure at all. Think about how many players are not in the official top 12 that could easily qualify if they wanted to: Ben and Ross come to mind immediately. Each person that qualifies means someone gets knocked out. And then there are a bunch of up and coming players who are improving quickly... Corey, Svavar, etc. just to name a few. I bet there will be a few surprises in the top 12 before Oct.
I remember Vince and I were discussing last year what the cutoff score would be for KO3. At the time I said 1.03M and Vince said 1.05M. I wonder who will be right.
Somebody better get in touch with Kyle Goewert...

This was really fun, and a great first tournament for me. Even though I didn't put up a PB, it was great just playing, and watching and being a part of it. Unexpectedly winning the mystery bounty was pretty great, too! Thanks Eric and John, I look forward to the next one!

I just wanted to let you guys know how much fun the wildcard was for me. I am a new member and that was my 1st time streaming but I had a blast. I am really glad to have a reason to start playing donkey Kong again and find a community who is also passionate about it. I can't wait for the next streaming event and hopefully I can schedule off work for it. I have to say the wildcard was awesome even though my name got horribly butcherd on the scoreboard "seriously who is Erin drake? Half those letters are not even in my name > ;D "

:-\ please the name is aaron rounsaville I don't know where that "erin drake" stuff came from and its a mame but I don't have any inp saved. I never record my games that way but I can start if its important. It wasn't required for the wildcard so I didn't mess with it just to much hassle to exit mame and start recording each game especially when I was rushing between work and twitch crashing.

Yeah, I understand. Sorry about the name. Once you get used to recording your inp for the high score list it will only take about 5 seconds once you get used to it. Nice to meet you.
