Since Riley has been slackin' on the threads lately..... <YSG>
A couple of weeks ago there was a Galaga event at Pincadia (http://pincadia.com/galagala) in Brisbane https://donkeykongforum.net/index.php?topic=2504.0
The event was a massive success.
The event utilised a new track, which was solely created for the purpose of live tournaments - Micro 31;
- Marathon settings
- Highest score at the end of Stage 31
This really changed the way the game is played. It was something fresh for the players and credits were no more than 20 minutes, keeping the audience engaged the whole time.
So what would this look like for DK? Jr? DK3? Is it even needed?

Donkey Kong 3 would go to board 29. For max score you would not use your super spray until board 29. Then you would use it on the worms. Then you would kill four men to kill even more worms with the super spray.
The first 28 boards would be fun to watch before the slaughter of the worms, I mean creepies.

Yeah I was thinking either 29 or whenever the lock appears (35?)
Junior there probably isnt any good track since sacrificing men on first hideout would always be a thing
I can see some potential for a shorter tournament variation in DK though, maybe starting on L5 since the start boards are too random

I think DK3 is better built for this sort of thing.
Time-wise, I like the Kong Klub 5-minute challenge, but something a little longer might be better in this scenario...15 minutes? 20? What does 31 stages of Galaga take? 15 minutes?
Score/distance-wise, if you're not going to make a dedicated tournament romset, then something like "End of Level 5" might work. That would keep games under 35 minutes or so and gets you through one cycle of every difficulty of every board type. If you make a dedicated romset, then anything goes. Fixed RNG, fixed start and end points, fixed time limit. You could do something like "Start at Level 5 and give each player 15 minutes, with the same RNG." But dedicated romsets would be a pain to implement
