FRIDAY THE 13TH!! IN APRIL.... is the next Mario Bros. Online Open. The first installment of the year! The variation will be standard, medium difficulty, NO POW, and the Tourny will start at 3:00 AM EST on Friday the 13th, and end at 3:00 AM EST Monday the 16th, which will be Midnight PST. Shorter duration of time this time, but you can play as many games as you want, but have to stream live with an Arcade Cab or through Mame. There will be Division 1 and 2 again. Division 1 is anyone that has scored over a million points on MB before, and Division 2 is anyone from a beginner to under a million as their best score previous. If there is at least 8 players in Division 2, a $100 prize will be given out to the highest score winner through paypal. Division 1 winner is bragging rights and $50 bucks through paypal. Start replying in this message to say if you are participating or not and your twitch channel you will be streaming from. MB TIME SOON!! <stirpot>

I gotta start knocking the rust off. I'm totally in for this round of the MBOO.
Looking forward to it. Medium Difficulty and No POW is always fun.

KongTower.... You can participate in Division 2, which is beginners up to players who have NOT scored a million on MB. The more the merrier, and if at least 8 players participate in Division 2, there is a $100 prize, like I mentioned before, for the first place score of Division 2. There has to be 8 though. Incentive to get people to either discover, rediscover, or start playing this great game, and one of the 3 pillars of the original Mario games. Practice now and play when the time comes. You can stream and record arcade or MAME for this.

I’m in. I have a Mario Bros WB that would love to play!
-
Welcome Wooden Arcade. If you have Facebook, please join the Mario Bros. FB group there too. what's WB btw?....

Never mind. Widebody cabs are the best, especially for 2 player. More space in between, lol! Remeber the variation will be Medium Difficulty on the dips, NO POW again for reference. :)
-
And one more reminder Wooden Arcade, you must stream your game live on your twitch channel if you have one. On the MB FB group, people have been replying in the main message about this event in the comments with their twitch handles, but you can do that here too ofcourse.

The MBO starts in a couple days. Start and end times again are... 3:00 AM EST on Friday the 13th,which is Midnight PST and end at 3:00 AM EST Monday the 16th, which will be Midnight PST. You must stream your game on twitch, or a recording of you stating the time and day you played your game with a shot of your face, and submit all links to one of the 2 wall posts in the Mario Bros. League on FB or here for this event. Division 2 must have 8 different active players during the course of the event to release the $100 prize to the top score in Division 2. If you have scored 1 million poiints or better before, you CANNOT be in Division 2. You must play in Division 1, where I am giving a $50 prize for the top score of the weekend, regardless how many play in Division 1. Payment will be made through Paypal only. If you don't have a paypal account, you can open one up for free. The variation again is Medium Difficulty NO POW single player. Rev up those engines and let's have some fun playing Mario Bros. this weekend ALL. Cheers!

I'm practicing a little bit. :)
Please clarify for noob: in this variant, it IS OK to stand on the POW, correct? You just can't hit it? And if you do hit it, that immediately nullifies the run?
Just asking because I have a memory at some point of watching somebody playing who was intentionally knocking the POW away (during the bonus rounds) so that it couldn't be used to stand on. But I'm thinking maybe that was a "custom variant."
-
Hey Chris. It's regular NO POW, so yes you can stand on the POW, but you cannot hit it. If you do, then your game is dqed.
-
Ah OK, I think what I'm remembering is "ultimate no-POW", which was done last year, but I've never played it, and couldn't make it to any of those tournies.
-
Actually for the first time we are accepting scores if you accidentally hit the POW. So whatever score you got to that point will be recognized. This should make it easier for Division 2 players to play more free and loose. I'll be streaming tommorrow. www.twitch.tv/maximumsteve

Love this ruling, Steve. I think it's a good call.
I've always felt that in variations like this, such as no-hammer in DK, that it made a lot more sense to treat these sorts of things as instant game-overs, rather than instant DQs, since the mistake does nothing to affect or invalidate the score achieved up to that point in the game.
(It's also far easier to accidentally hit the POW in MB than to grab the hammer in DK.)
-
Definitely a better way of doing things
Another good example is single ship Galaga. Your game ends if you double-up, its not a straight out DQ
Good luck to everyone playing!

Oh, that's really interesting.
I can imagine a situation where you could accidentally get sucked in <Allen> to the Galaga beam while trying to avoid a bullet/bug, then screw up the shot to kill your captured ship and accidentally release it. Certainly shouldn't be a DQ of the whole game.
Maybe it's time to get DKF to think about changing the no-hammer rules... <stirpot>

May not be able to stream today - taking the boy to his grandparents for the weekend - but that means I've got lots of time tomorrow to rock it. Sunday too.
-
If you guys are up for watching some low-quality Mario Bros. action, I'll see if I can stream some later today.
-
Upped the ante a little more today. 1,773,470!! 1.5 Mil first man. Best start in history, but faltered after that. :(.....https://www.twitch.tv/videos/250324549
Watch from the 14:50 mark on...

Ugh a weekend full of technical difficulty. This is the best run I was actually able to stream to Twitch. So, my score entry for this round is 160,980pts

I want to thank everyone that participated in this installment of the Mario Bros. Online Open Tourny! We will do another one in 3 months. Please comment what variation you want to do in the next tourny or keep it where it is at. Hopefully we can get more entries in Division 2 to release money and more Division 1 players to come back to the fold(Corey Chambers, Stephen Boyer, George Strain, Tom Votava, etc...) Here are the final score results of both Division 1 and 2....
Division 1 NO POW
Steven Kleisath-1,773,470
Benjamin Falls- 890,400
Perry Rodgers-601,300
Ross Benzinger- I was told by Ben around 600,000 and change
Division 2 NO POW
Jeremy Price-600,530 (Good score Jeremy!)
Chris Psaros-233,860
Benjamin Sweeney-160,980
Jason Brittain-93,530

Thanks Steve, I had fun.
I still have a strange relationship with this game, where if I haven't played in a while, I get frustrated and start whinging about it being un-fun and hard to control. But then, after a few hours with it, something unlocks in my brain, I start getting into a groove, and I find the game pulling at me. I already played twice today. ;D
I'll be back for more next time, prize pool or not. :)
-
Thank you Steve!
I do apologize for basically putting up a one-off run on Sunday night. Bad weekend for finding time. This deserved more diligence than that.
On the next round could you include Monday, like a Fri to Mon span? Just spitballin’ here.
-
I will extend the time frame for a whole week for the next installment which will be in July, and start practicing, because the variation will be......... Ultimate NO POW Hardest as requested a bunch on the MB League FB Page. Shorter games that way, but crazy indeed! :P
-
Dang Ultimate No POW on Hardest. I’ll really need to practice that. I’m pretty dependent on standing on the POW.
