Title: Welcome to DKF!
Post by: JCHarrist on January 23, 2013, 02:50:47 pm
Welcome to the Donkey Kong Forum!

The goal of this forum is to provide players of all skill levels a place to share strategies, consolidate information and discuss all aspects of Arcade and MAME Donkey Kong without having to worry about "saturating" other gaming forums with DK threads.

I have been extremely impressed with the community of DK players I have met online and in person and I hope that you find the forum useful and enjoyable.

I look forward to seeing your posts!

Jeff Harrist

Hello all.  Thought I should join since I decided 2013 is going to be the year to really practice DK.   Played solidly for a week (50 games) and don't seem to be improving, so hopefully I'll pick up some hints & tips here.  Current HS is 266,00, can't remember what level that was without rewatching the INP.

I really also want to improve upon my CK score which currently sits at 215K on TG but I have scored higher which hasn't been verified due to TG being down.  Think it was 375K from memory.  I have killscreened CK but it was on 7 man game, would really like to KS this under TG rules.

Anyway, a dedicated DK forum is a great idea, I thought about something like this 12 mths ago but it didn't seem right for someone with my paltry DK skills to start it up  :-[

Hi my name is Hank.  I like to play DK.  My high score is 2700 points higher than Vincent's.

Seriously, something like this is long overdue.  A lot of the CAG forums get saturated with DK talk and understandably not everyone likes DK.

It was so nice to be able to register for this site without having to jump through a hundred hoops, like some other sites.

I'm a D.K. arcade machine owner and player. Got the arcade itch again after watching King of Kong (like many, I imagine). I've gotten away a bit from my push to better my high score on D.K. Perhaps posting on this site will be the nudge I need to start up again.

LOL!  Yes, thanks to Vincent, I briefly held the 'record'!  I didn't think anyone really noticed this fiasco perpetrated by 'The Canadian'.  As Vince once said, "Jason Nugent always has a plan."  Apparently, that plan has included avoiding DK for a year. ;)

A dedicated DK forum,Awesome!!!  I just registered today after discovering the forum last week. I've been reading a lot of the strategy posts. I originally got the DK bug from King of Kong. After first seeing the movie I immediately started playing it  on an emulator on my pc but it just wasn't the same and I couldn't afford to buy a DK cabinet. So over the years I haven't played it much but about 5 months ago I decided to build my own cabinet and 3 months after that I finished building the cabinet. It is ran on mame but now I have the arcade/joystick cabinet experience so I am very happy. Since I finished the cabinet I have been playing it quite a bit. I am only at 88,000 but plan on getting a kill screen someday and maybe even the record many many moons down the road.

Welcome to the forum, Roger!

Let's see, you started playing about a month ago.  Your personal best is just under 400k, and your average score is more than 300k.  Yes, I'd say that's quite respectable!

and is anyone here going to Funspots classic arcade tournament the begining of june? besides Hank  ;)

I've only been to Funspot once, in June of 2010.  If I ever make it back there for some DK, please take it easy on me.   :)

It must be a nice feeling to take on such a project, and follow it through to completion.  Unfortunately, when it comes to woodworking, painting, electronics, and what to do with power tools, my knowledge and experience are limited (as in nonexistent).

Thanks. I really enjoyed the project. I am not a finish carpenter by any stretch of the imagination. I don't even have a table saw, I did with a skill saw. I was able to find the plans online and learn from others online and because of that it turned out pretty nice. So basically I'm saying that if I can do it anyone can, lol.

Well im laid off from work for the winter will be going back in like two weeks or so but for the last month i probably play 6 hours at least a day and go to funspot probably two times a week trying to get ready for the classic arcade tournement.  it basically just takes time and practice to master this game theres no quick way of learning something new always seems to pop up.  he who is faithless gives up when the road darkens a fortune cookie i got two weeks ago.

I'm not sure if this is an "introduce yourself" thread, but I figured I might as well throw a hello out to everyone. I started playing DK (MAME) seriously at the beginning of March, mostly at the behest of f_symbols.  :)

I don't have a current time-specific goal, but I'm definitely pursuing the killscreen. Eventually I'd like to attend a KO. Most of my gaming hours are spent on Pac-Man Championship Edition DX, a sort of "retro revival" of the original Pac-Man. Recent killscreener f_symbols is the world's leading player at this game.

I enjoy watching many of the Twitch streams by this forum's members and I might starting streaming DK if I can starting getting 300K or 400K consistently. If anyone hears of a DK cab for sale in Hawaii, let me know! :)

Hi all, my name is Brendan. My first arcade machine was a DK, but I didn't particularly have a taste for it at the time, and I got rid of it. I now kinda wish I hadn't. Now I'd like to atone by getting better at the game. I stream other games on Twitch, mostly Super Street Fighter 2 Turbo, but DK will be in the mix soon.

Welcome, Ben!  You've come to the right place.

A substantial number of DK heavyweights are members of this forum.  Unfortunately, I'm not one of them.   :(

If the game is giving you a hard time, you'll find that there's plenty of guidance and support here.  All you have to do is ask.  Of course, once you overcome the Level 3 obstacle, you'll have to face the L4 elevators, the L5+ conveyors and rivets, and other frustrating random elements.

Over time, I predict that you'll become more of a player and less of a fan.   ;)

For those of you who don't know Ben, he is a Tetris god!  Watch Ectasy of Order on Hulu if you're not familiar with the NES Tetris scene.  Those guys have been around, supporting each other and holding 'Tetris Off's longer than most of us have been playing DK.

I'll be there!, well not really and my family is in town for like a week.  However, 2 things need to happen with far greater regularity and ferocity, one thing really: Starting at RQ you train me in DK and I slowly get better.  moving later to Chatterbox where I train you at Tetris and one or the other of us wins at chess.  Those are good ideas!  In addition I also met a number of Nintendo age folks in Milwaukee who said there should be get togethers Aaaaand, did you know some of the best Mario kart 64 and Bond players in the country live right around here?... Its true,  Minneapolis is basically ground zero in gaming I hung out with them recently... They RUINED me at those two games, and I thought I was a good Mario kartist, nope!

Ben, we can actually train both at one location: Did you know that the Chatterbox just off of Ford Parkway in St. Paul has a DK machine? My dad told me that they do, and insisted it was true, but I haven't checked it out for myself yet. Would be a great place to train. I would also be interested in meeting these MK64 and Bond players.

I guess this has become the sort of unofficial introduction thread--so my name is Josh, and I have been playing Donkey Kong on Mame on and off for about two years now. Never loved playing on a computer, but I did get some good practice in--and I'd average about 50,000. My goal was to get an arcade machine for my house so I could get serious about playing--which I was able to do a few weeks ago. (I have been following this declaration with the line "so my house is now cooler than yours," but since alot of you probably have DK cabs, I guess our houses are equally cool :) ) I have since reached 120,500 on my home machine, and now average around 75,000. I don't think I'll ever have the time to devote to a WR attempt, so my goal is to reach a killscreen someday.

Also, this is the basically the best forum ever. I'm bound to raise my high score about 100,000 points just by reading right?

Hi, Josh! Welcome to the best forum ever. I think that between reading the forum and watching others play on Twitch you can definitely improve your game. We have a high score list that may be of interest to you: https://donkeykongforum.net/index.php?topic=246.0 (https://donkeykongforum.net/index.php?topic=246.0) You can click on the different player's names and be directed to their streaming page. There are some rules for posting a score on the list so you will want to familiarize yourself with it. Also watch Dean Saglio's game over and over, you will be sure to improve in no time: https://donkeykongforum.net/index.php?topic=61.0 (https://donkeykongforum.net/index.php?topic=61.0)

Welcome!

I don't think that would be the best method at this point.  If you are trying to get through a Michael Crichton book, it doesn't help to get handed a Dickens novel.

I would say work on specific pain points of each stage, recognizing/avoiding danger areas for wild barrels on x-1, x-3, x-5 boards and avoiding bad barrel combinations by steering properly, working on recognizing what type of actions are best suited for success when the general universal start methods break down on x-2 and x-6 and getting comfortable running the maxed elevator stages.

That's good advice, Steve.  I should follow it myself.

Thanks for the welcome and advice everyone. I know that I must get better at the barrel and elevator stages before I can progress as a player. I'm fairly decent at the rivets and pie factory, or at least better than the other two. At least up to level 6. I can't recall, but I don't think I've ever made level 7.

One thing I have not yet figured out is how to avoid, as Steve says, wild  barrels. When I have watched the top players, they seem to know exactly where they a going most of the time, to the point where they can anticipate and jump/hammer them for points. I have tried several strategies, but none seem to work.

I also have to to learn on the elevator levels how to retreat. My eyes have trouble being in two places at once! But at least I know what I need to do, and can practice on MAME.

Josh, some may say not to watch Dean. But to be honest, I learned how to play by watching dean. I watched during dinner, before bed, while in the tub, 5 min here, and 30 min there, I would replay parts over and over and pause and think about it, observe safe spots etc. Sure, I agree that this may not be for everyone but we all grow differently. My advice comes from my own experience only because it may be yours as well, perhaps not, try it and see for yourself. (I also watched Billy Mitchell, Hank Chien, and Steve Weibe videos on youtube.) If you want a simpler, just running the boards kind of game, that does not go out of its way to point press then feel free to watch my killscreen game at http://www.twitch.tv/clchambers00/b/389301146. (http://www.twitch.tv/clchambers00/b/389301146.) It was very simple and to the point.

Hey Corey--watched some of Dean last night--very impressive. But I was coming here to ask for a "running the boards" type game I could watch. So thanks! There is still alot of stuff some may consider 'basic' that I have trouble with.

Ha.  That's the name of my blog on here, "Running Boards".  I would recommend watching danman123456's stream, since it is probably more the caliber that you are looking for.  He's a very good DK player, and is gunning for a killscreen.  Watching him play has helped my game a lot over the past couple of weeks.
But, to be honest, there are all sorts of tremendous DK players here.  Watch them all, when you find time.  :P

You are welcome! You will find my "running the boards" killscreen game very straight forward. I did this on purpose just to get a killscreen. No extras. No point pressing. JRTFBDN, or whatever that is! lol

Been watching alot of video, already upped my PB today by almost 25,000 points. Also have been averaging nearly 100,000 per game, which is a big improvement for me. I'll be killscreening in no time  ;D

Welcome Josh! Yeah as JN said I'm in this mindset to JRTFBDN and get a KS now. It's driving me a little bit now so your more then welcome to watch anytime. There are a ton of great players here and call all give some advice. I've gotten some great info from people and I really think it has helped my game!

Here is some small bits that should help as well as anyone who may not know (and if I have anything wrong someone please tell me because this is just what I have picked up over the years now).

1. If a barrel is "spinning" when DK picks it up on the barrel stage that is a wild barrel.
2. He can only throw a wild barrel when he is facing to the left to "pick up" a barrel. Hence don't try and go up the far left ladder except when he has turned away to the center or right. This keeps you from getting "1/16th"
3. The conveyors on the PF stage change direction at the bottom when Kong reaches the far left of the screen.
4. The hammer on the conveyor lasts for as long as it takes kong to get back to the spot he was in when you picked it up.
5. The wild barrels on Stage 3/4 are the "wildest" (take a huge arc) but tend to go to the right easier.
6. The wild barrels on Stage 4 become Stage 5 wild barrels after 33 "real" seconds. This can be affected by wild barrels but a good rule of thumb is when the time starts getting the in the 6000 range (Thanks marky_d!)
7. To get a "free pass" or a "freebie" on the PF stand just left of the purse. When all the fireballs shoot out at the top left immediately attempt to run up the right side. (getting the prizes as well for a quick xxx point addition)

That's all for now :)

6. The wild barrels on Stage 4 become Stage 5 wild barrels when the timer hits 6000

Someone correct me if I am wrong, but I'm pretty sure the difficulty from 4 to 5 occurs 33 seconds into the screen.

Post by: LMDAVE on May 14, 2013, 08:44:58 am
If by 33 seconds you mean 33 timer ticks, then they wouldn't change until 4700. But, I always used the 6000 mark as the changing point.
Title: Re: Welcome to DKF!
Post by: marky_d on May 14, 2013, 08:50:57 am

No, I meant 33 "real-time" seconds. But if you are taking bottom hammer I suppose the switch would have occurred by 6000.
Title: Re: Welcome to DKF!
Post by: danman123456 on May 14, 2013, 10:04:33 am
Yeah I updated the post. It's 33 "real-time" seconds which generally works out to the 6000 point in the timer but can be affected by a lot of wild barrels since those cause the counted to go faster.

True, but don't forget if you are playing bottom hammer the # of smashes make a big difference!

Aloha everyone, I'm Jeremy's (xelnia) wife and my name is Katie. In the evenings I sit on the couch, watching him play and you will hear me giving him a hard time and singing along with the iTunes. You may have seen me in your stream since I watch the multi-stream page when Jeremy's playing, so I can also heckle him in the chat.

I am going to have some extra time off work this summer, so I aspire to become a respectable Donkey Kong player in my own right.

Awesome, Katie! My wife plays DK too. I think her PB is around 25K. But there are a few other female players that are around 250k. I know there is a local female DK player in my city that can get about 120K if she survives the first hard springs stage. Good luck on learning DK, and welcome!

I just talked with the gentleman on youtube that got over 1.2M points on DK on the DK64.
He said that he has gotten up to 900K with 6 killscreens on mame. I invited him to the forum and to participate in our upcoming tournament. If you have the chance maybe connect with him on youtube and hopefully we will be seeing his post in this thread very soon.

donkey kong 1,222,900 millions, DK64 version, dk arcade, nintendo 64 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lekPEle8F8w#)

Hey Corey, I've chatted with that guy before.  He commented on a few of my youtube videos way back when.  He's been following the DK thing for a while and is pretty aware of the "scene."  I hope he'll join us.

As for 1.2M on that version, seems incredible.  I assume there's no killscreen?
Title: Re: Welcome to DKF!
Post by: corey.chambers on August 02, 2013, 11:03:17 am
I have played this version, but not competitively. As far as I know, this guy has the highest score and it did not reach a killscreen. But there are some interesting differences. The N64 version does not have barrel control, and levels 5+ still have type 2 wild barrels. He says that there are some safe spots on the barrel board where you will never get killed by one of these wild barrels. This means that they are pre-programed and are not influenced by Mario's position. Once a fireball is smashed with the hammer on the pie factory, it will not respawn. Fireballs on any board can go up and down all ladders at will, even coming down from the kong conveyor, or rising as high as pauline on the barrel board. The range that one can hit a firefox or fireball is much larger, sometimes just next to it will cause a smash. The jump over to the small platform on the spring board needs to be more precise, there is a larger margin of error but mario's ascending and descending speed on ladders is about equal to his left and right movements, making it easier to time the springs or escape a fireball/firefox. The lower conveyor does not change direction when kong reaches the far left edge of his conveyor, rather the change in direction seems to be a set time integral that does not correlate with kong at all. I have thought about learning and streaming some attempts to get familiar with it.

Just from watching a few seconds of that Youtube clip, one glaring difference is that the Bonus begins at 9000 and ticks down very slowly.  There seem to be a ton of other differences too, just another bad port of a good arcade game.

I met some more DK players while practicing DKJr at Rusty Quarters tonight! One was a guy named Alex who's PB was around 450k something, and one was a girl named Andy who said her PB was around 350k. They said they have a machine at their house, so I told them all about the KO2 and the WCRs that they could play in if they get a webcam and stream. I also told them about DKF, so hopefully they remember to check it all out! It'd be cool to have another girl in the community that is a 300k+ player!

That's why I said "(kindda)". Hank Chien Reading strikes again.

And recently, she got very close to a kill screen and it was AT LEAST a 920k+ kill screen pace. Unfortunately, she died 4 times on the same board and ended at 32k on stage 4. Trust my maths on that.

For the 2nd one, I can understand that both could be accepted. But for the first one, without the comma, it means that I am in the action of reading carefully. With the comma, it's an order saying to read carefully. And the meaning of your sentence was obviously an order implying myself to start reading carefully.

And if you don't agree and still think that it doesn't need a comma, then you still need to add a "s" to "reads" if you don't use the comma, since "reads" is a present tense and conjugated with a third person pronoun.

It doesn't matter what you decide, you're checkmate! BOOM baby!  :D

You are correct, Vincent.

Without the comma, "Vincent read carefully" suggests past tense.

Then again, I liberally throw commas around, wherever and whenever I feel like it, so what do I know?

Maybe I should sign up for that seminar after all.   ;)

Hello. I'm some dirty console/PC peasant. I'm also the admin at some site that lets you play chinese checkers or something.

So what's this "Donkey Kong" I've been hearing about?
GREATEST....VIDEO GAME.....EVER

Well, arguably top 10.

G4TV ranked DK #15 top video game of all time, beating out the likes of Pong, BurgerTime, Galaga, Space Invaders, Ms Pac-Man, to name other arcade classics that made the list, and many many many other games from all platforms current and past.

Games Radar and Slant Magazine (whatever that is) didn't rate it at all in their top 100.  Games Radar gave Dark Souls the #1 slot, and Slant Magazine gave to Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time.  Okay, LoZ:OoT is a great game. but Dark Souls #1 video game of all time?  Both of these lists seem a bit mis-guided.

Popular Mechanics ranked DK number 90 out of 100.

And that's where my google search to prove DK is worth playing ends.  You draw your own conclusions.  Or just find a cabinet in your area or download MAME and the rom, and start playing.  When you die on L1-1, come back here for some strategy guidance.  ;)

Games Radar gave Dark Souls the #1 slot, and Slant Magazine gave to Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time.

Those lists seem awfully misguided. Ocarina of Time is a "good" game. Only "okay" when compared to other Zeldas. Slant must have been more concerned with populace vote than actual game quality. Giving Dark Souls the nod is a war crime. Maybe Games Radar was in need of the publicity?

Season's Greetings Fellow Donkey Kong Forum members!  :)  I'm Duc from Chicago, IL, member 600 even as of this writing  ;)  Blue's my favorite color, so you'll be seeing quite a bit of it.  My background's a bit different than most folks as my family had the immigrant refugee experience when we were first sponsored in Salt Lake City, UT.  I had come from a fairly sheltered background, but fortunately, had access to video games and consoles.  I'd gotten to play arcade games in the public sphere every once in a while.  I remember quite fondly, the mid to late 1980s era of Atari 2600, and especially NES, in which I played the heck out of Super Mario Bros.

My family moved to Chicago during the early 1990s.  I credit my cool big brother and our uncle for getting me into gaming.  The former also got me into fighting games, and the latter, why, his game was Galaga, in addition to other classics.  In the present day, I patron establishments that have sought to revive the arcade gaming phenomenon.  Things of course, aren't the same as they once were, when the arcade scene pretty much died down in the city when the last arcade closed in December of 2007.  Now, we're lucky to have the bar/arcades in Chicago, and the freeplay ones in the suburbs, such as the Galloping Ghost Arcade (http://www.gallopingghostarcade.com/) and the Underground Retrocade (http://undergroundretrocade.com/), Level 257 (https://www.facebook.com/Level257Chicago/), and a cool, long, long standing arcade that's even further away, Star Worlds Arcade (http://starworldsarcade.com/).

Recently, I streamed some classic arcade games at the Ghost.  I'll link the archives below.  Big thanks to Jeff Harrist for bringing us all together in this fine medium, in which it seems, we're all diverse in our experiences, backgrounds, preferences, and even our hobby of video gaming.  It was great meeting you sir, during the spring of 2013, that Friday of Mark Alpiger's Classic Arcade Gaming Tournament, at the original Logan Hardware (http://logan-hardware.com/) location (it's now James Zespy's awesome bar arcade Logan Arcade (https://www.facebook.com/LoganHardwareArcade), while the record shop got located a few blocks west on Fullerton Ave).  Cheers everyone!  <popcorn>

Hello All :)

I guess I should have posted here a long while ago haha - I just wound up jumping right into DKF haha

So who am I - well aside from being Sock's other half my name in Nina and I'm a spazzy hippy chick who loves video games (even though I really suck at playing them)

I've been following John's adventure with remix and figured if i'm gonna be a DK widow I might as well join in all the fun :P Though honestly I feel like i've gotten to know quite a few of you watching you all stream along side Sock and to be honest I really love the vibe here here on DKF - you are all great people ^_^

I really haven't been playing Donkey Kong long - I started when Sock begged me to play test remix haha so I've only been at it off and on for a few months - though I WANT to get better hee so I'm trying to compete agasint myself to keep bringing up my Highschore !

Aside from being a spazz, I am dyslexic and also have major dexterity issues in my hands due to a TFCC tear - please do not mind my terrible spelling / typing :P

I am so very happy to have met many of you and muchly looking forward to meeting more of you!

Hello everyone. My names Andy. Thanks for adding me to your forum!

I'm currently building a RaspberryPI machine with classic Nintendo controls  to run a form of mame to play donkey kong. My hopes are to eventually start making decent scores on the machine and then eventually try and achieve something on an actual Donkey Kong cabinet.

Living in Syracuse New York the closest arcade I can find with a DK machine is in Binghamton (about an hour or so away). It's called Robot City Games, great place. Definitely look it up. In the meantime I'll plug away practicing and try not to be a nuisance on here!

My current scores stay around 40,000 to 50,000 with one lucky game at 98,400. I will try and get on making a real submission as soon as I figure the twitch/stream thingy.

Again, thanks for letting me join!

Welcome Andy! I started playing DK on a Raspberry Pi as well about the time I found Donkey Kong Forum. About a month later, I got my first Donkey Kong cabinet, and now I have several arcade cabinets including 2 Donkey Kongs.

If you have a PC, I would recommend that you try playing DK on a version of Wolfmame, MARP, or Retro Uprising. Playing on your PC allows you to easily stream your games to Twitch and the community will gladly help you with strategy and whatnot. That and watching other players play are the best ways to learn! Streaming from the Raspberry Pi is possible (and possibly complicated) with a capture card or a webcam, but if you ever want to submit a score, you won't be able to do it on your Pi.

Hope to see you playing, progressing, and enjoying DK!

Hello DKF!

I'm Chris(topher) from Germany and relatively new to Donkey Kong and the whole Arcade Madness ;D I'm 26 years old and have grown up with two older brothers so I've played many classic games from the 80's up to today on many systems like SEGA Megadrive, NES, SNES, Dreamcast, C64, PC etc.

Arcades were and are very rare here in Germany so I visited my last one when I was like 10 years old and were on holidays in the Netherlands. From the day since I first saw a videogame I was fascinated with the technology and the hobby. Today I'm making my money as a computer technican and fulfilling my live long dream of an own custom build arcade cabinet. I'm currently building an arcade bartop (sadly don't have enough space to spare for an upright cabinet :/ ) to play all the games I've missed in the past :) Currently I can already play on it with arcade controls from Sanwa. Maybe I will post some pictures if it's complete with all of the Artwork.

When I was searching after the best games for mame Donkey Kong popped directly into my sight and I downloaded it right away to play it. Oh boy, much fun times and many ragequits later I heard about The King of Kong, watched it on Netflix and since then I got hooked with Donkey Kong. I've read much of the threads in this board and my goal is to reach the legendary kill screen!

I don't know how much I can participate in this board cause I don't have really much free time due to my job. I just wanted to introduce myself shortly, so that no one will ask himself "Who the fuck is this d!zZy dude, always logged in and creeping the board!?"  ;D

You dont have sync. Adjust the vhold pot on the monitor and the two h a v position pots on the pcb. If that dont work try very carefully to adjust the hhold pot but its hard to get to and you could shock the shit outa yourself if you are not very very careful in there...

One of my DK's used to do that sometimes when I reset it. I would smack it on the side really hard and it would clear up. It was the white sync cable that goes from the PCB to the monitor board. Just needed to be reseated. Vertical Hold is easy to adjust as Ken recommended as well. Sometimes they are very sensitive and you may just have to turn it a tiny bit.

Very nice red, cab!  Yours is better than the one I just picked up a couple weeks ago.  You have what appears to be the original CPO, bezel and marquee (no C Nintendo of America 1981 on yours).  Mine has original marquee, but bezel and CPO are replaced.

The only thing that stand out as odd is the red ball top on the joystick.  Weren't all original ball tops black?

If you look at the back of your bezel, is it a white outline, with tinted film creating the tint?

What version game board is running in your red cab?  Please send pics of that, if you would, and also of the serial/part number metal nameplate.

Maybe this would be better to take to a separate thread, since it's a bit outside of the scope of "welcome to DK Forums".  ;)  I would love to jump in on a thread, with comparisons of red cabs among the members of DKF.

:edit: Just zoomed in on your picture of the back of the cab.  You've got an original TKG2 converted Radar Scope board set.  <gasp>  Does the title screen say C Nintendo 1981 or C Nintendo of America 1981 ('C' being the copyright symbol)?  Oh yea, you don't know cuz the monitor ain't working.  In addition to V and H hold, there are three brightness controls, one at the flyback, one on the chassis, and one on the remote board.  You may need to mess with those to get a good image, too.

:edit edit:  I see you posted in my red cab thread also, bigcat.  I'm going to take this conversation to that thread.

Hi DKF!

Signed up to check in and see what the community is like and to grab some tips.  First saw DK in a chip shop in London about 30 years ago, played it once and hated it.  Watched the movie, became very interested in Pac-Man and the perfect game.  Recently gave DK another go and now I'm loving it.  So addictive.

I'm playing it in a frankly unacceptable way if you're a purist.  The MAME version on a PSP Go.  Great little handheld though and tons of battery life and I've pushed my score up to a pitiful 59,990.  No point pressing in store for me for a while.  Aiming for a respectable 100k and then to keep going from there.

Will be searching the forum archives to see if anyone ever recommended a decent USB arcade stick.  Will be at Play Expo Manchester in October searching for an arcade cab to play DK on for a few goes though.  Have always been a huge fan of DK2 (Nintendo Game and Watch).

Welcome, repoman!  I am on a budget, so I've always gotten GREAT play out of my Qanba sticks.  the Q1 worked great, and I did a slight upgrade to the Qanba Q4.  I've seen the Q1 for less than $60US.  The Q4 has Sanwa stick and buttons and gives better performance.  A little over $150US.  Been a fantastic stick for every kind of game, including Atari 2600 Dragster.  Good luck and good gaming!  This is a great community for asking questions and getting answers.  Be sure to watch the DK streamers - it's by far the best way to learn.  But watch out for that QAOP guy.  He's a little sketchy.

Hi DKF!

Hey Guys. I wanted to join the community because I recently started playing daily. I use to have the original Donkey Kong arcade machine when I was a kid. Hi Godlessgirl!  I don't even know you.  I haven't even seen a single game of yours.   I do know one thing already though.  You can get the female record.  All you need is dedication.  If you are willing to put in the grind, you can have the record.  In fact, if you're willing to put in the grind you can get a killscreen.
I have no doubt about that.  It's all up to you, and your willingness to do so.

Welcome GodlessGirl!

To my knowledge the top female score is 333,200, held by Kayla Rose (https://go.twitch.tv/videos/50267001).  She was darn good and even attended a Kong Off or two, but I reckon she quit playing some years ago.

As Homer suggested, the score is well within your reach so long as you remain dedicated.  DK -- being the asshole game that it is -- will test your patience and dedication as much as your skill.

Best of luck.  And don't hesitate to ask any questions or jump on the streams and learn by watching others play.

Hello!  I'm "Rev" John from Australia.  I've got a bunch of scores up on Twin Galaxies and Retro Uprising, so some of you might recognise my name.

I've been following the news with Todd Rogers and now Billy Mitchell, I certainly hope TG pull down a bunch of BM's scores.  It's all got me playing DK a bit more, and now I am really getting into the game.  I've found http://wiki.donkeykonggenius.com/Donkey_Kong_Basic_Manual really useful, and knowing some of the 'secrets' of the game is just adding to my enjoyment.  The only 'quirk' I don't like is how you can jump a barrel and not get points for it  >:( , but I'm aware that the same quirk can get you extra points like taunting Kong on rivets  ;D .  Currently I'm stuck on the level 4 elevator level (4-4?), I know I need to learn some tricky maneuvers to get past the springs at the top, I may need to see if I can set up a version of MAME that allows save states so I can practice.

Back in the day I think I only ever played DK once on an actual arcade machine, there was one in a sandwich shop where my sister used to work.  I remember I went very poorly and never played again until I discovered MAME.

Cheers all!  John

Hey guys thanks for adding me to the forum.  I played my first game of Donkey Kong yesterday 8/10/2018 at Cactus Jacks in Oklahoma City.  I have been watching streams on twitch & recordings on youtube of people playing.  I watched the King of kong documentary a couple months ago & after that I became interested.  I was born in 1982 so I do remember playing DK on the 2600 but never on an arcade cabinet. I've mainly been a PC gamer.  I played Quake 2 competitively for years in 4vs4 rocket arena on the ogl/twl ladders.

My high score yesterday was 17,400 after an hour of playing. I kept attempting to emulate the play of many others on L=01, L=02, L=03 and get the most points I could out of each level before moving on.  I've got it installed on my PC using a version of Mame but only have my keyboard to use at home.  I plan on attempting to get a good joystick desktop setup that might be similar to playing on the arcade.  My name on twitch is carn519.  519 is my old clan from the 90s.  I plan on streaming my early game play to youtube & twitch so I can track progression & watch my mistakes.

Thank you for adding me as a member. I admit I am late in life, late to the game, and late to the forum. So, I will be fifty this summer and I still remember the first time I ever saw a Donkey Kong machine. It was in the entrance foyer of a little seafood restaurant that my parents liked. I remember how much I loved it and just how much I stunk at it. We only ate there rarely so I had few chances to play it. I did not see another DK for quite a while after that. I never got the hang of it in the 80's... I would say I would max out at the second elevators, so I played other games I was better at.

I have always loved DK. Now, there is a new 80's style arcade in my hometown, Greensboro, NC. They have all the old Nintendo cabinets, lined up side by side... they even have Popeye. Anyway, this has brought me back to playing DK again, and I am already much better than I was previously. I max out around L6 or L7 now 175,700. I've only been at it a little while so I'm pleased with my progress.

I just wanted to thank you guys. You have done an incredible amount of work, posted some amazing graphs and explanations, so those of us who need help can advance. I did not want to just be a "leech", so from your humble, newest member... THANK YOU!

Glad to be a part of this forum!

I've been a huge fan of the game for many years, mostly playing via MAME. Fortunately, my new employer has not one, but TWO of the icade 60-in-1 jamma's (one coffee table and one upright), and that's where my coffee breaks have been going. As I improve I'm starting to risk reprimand, but it's totally worth it.

Now to find someone in the Bay Area to sell me a cab, preferably a DDK... any tips, please PM me :)

Hello all, thanks for accepting me to the forum and putting my twitch account on your list. Like many of you the King of Kong initially got me interested in DK. I mostly play MAME but I do venture out to an arcade once in a while. I played a bit several years ago but just got serious 6 weeks ago. I use an X-arcade tank stick for controls and play on an arcade style cabinet (Rec Room Masters) with a PC inside running Hyperspin. I just set a new personal best of 530,900 and made it to L14. (video is on twitch) DK forum has been enormously helpful to me. In particular the Spring Theory post was amazing. Thanks to everyone who's contributed content here. It sure makes it easier to progress when information is shared the way it is here.

thanks,
Dave

Hey there! I've been looking at this forum every now and then since the Arcade Archives Switch release, but I've been playing for longer. 'Nother King of Kong person here, but I'm a pretty big Nintendo and retro gaming person in general. My first time was actually playing on that wonky DK 64 version (probably not alone there)!  ;D

My current goal, when I have time to grind the game, is consistently getting past the third spring board. I can get past it when I'm practicing that section specifically, but getting past it after a successful run up for like 10 minutes is usually a different story. Should probably tell you about where I'm at in terms of skill, though I have learned a couple of the easier point pressing tricks.

Played the donkey kong nes and recently got into playing the arcade game from arcade archive putting it on switch, enjoy watching others play and just looking to practice and improve at the game.
(Maybe I will try mame once I get better)

I also really enjoy playing Mario bros arcade and the nes, I already speed run super Mario bros and the remake for fun and getting into that.

Soo yep, thank you for letting me join your community already spoken to afew of the regulars on twitch, peace all

Hello all and thanks for letting me in!

I am from Germany and actually not a hardcore gamer, but a collector.
I just added one of the first Donkey Kong Arcades to my collection an found out many interesting details about the early days / versions of Donkey Kong arcade machines. I will try to share them..

Best Regards,
Ekki

Well, right now I could not even reach the top 300, so it does not matter   :'(

BUT: According to this Forum-rules, a 4 board with US set1 is allowed.
