Title: IGBY Game Coverage
Post by: WCopeland on July 06, 2016, 10:22:15 am
Hey guys,

We should plan out what games each of us is going to cover here. Due to the nature of the tournament, it would be best if we try to have several specialists of a set of games, rather than everyone try to tackle everything.

It's a given that we should dominate Big Kong. Please do not wait until the last minute to play Big Kong. We've tried the sandbagging strategy in previous IGBY tournaments and it always ends poorly. Let's just dominate Big Kong and get it out of the way.

My current goals for the tournament are:

My current goals for the tournament are:
  • Big Kong - 200,000
  • Metal Slug - 2,000,000
  • 1943 - 2,000,000
  • VS Super Mario Bros. - 2,000,000

I've not really looked hard at the list. I'll try Big Kong and Mortal Kombat first. I'll give 1943 a try as well. Given its like 8 people now its going to require a lot of people play most of the games..... interesting :D

This might call for a second Jry graph / spreadsheet extravaganza?

I can only really commit to

which I can see myself playing for 5 weeks. I'll be happy to try and fill in some 8th place scores if I can as and where they might be needed.

I think Dan is right about the 8 placings too, team depth is going to be really important, and having to play rotten games you hate.

I'm not sure your 90 on Block Hole is going to hold up.  Kappa

I'm going to wait a few days and until we get more scores on the board before I narrow down my list, but for right now I can see myself playing:

I have no idea what my score goals are for those games, or any other game...wait and see or whatever! :-).

I'll do my best on SF2.

I am not expecting to make top 10 on the overall scoreboard (hopeless with MARP playing), though I expect to be top 3 for DKF. If I get my hands on a joystick/6-button CP I'll do better, but for now I just have a game pad where two of the attack buttons are shouldered, so it's a hindrance. I haven't looked at their roster,  but don't fantasize for even a second that you have a fart's chance in a windstorm against MARP. They are inhuman. See my post in the SF2 thread. (https://donkeykongforum.net/index.php?topic=1705.msg28560#msg28560)

It's been a LONG time since I played MK, and I've never played for score, and this difficulty is going to be a c ox, but maybe I can do something.

I played Renegade like a mf'er on the NES as a child, but that was almost 30 years ago, and I doubt any of that transitions to the arcade version.

I figure you guys will have Big Kong handled.

So far Ill play (list could be revised as I haven't fired up half of the games yet)

Armored Car
Big Dong
Block Hole
Block out
Cads & Dinos
Ketsui
Metal slug
Mortal Kombat (only if I can get the cheap jump kick to work)
Hettipede
Pandoras
Zerotime

I'll probably play every game at least once, but I'm fucking terrible at fighters and beat em ups generally. Dino an exception as I've played that before.
I'd like to avoid paperboy if possible, and I know jack shit about SMB - I figure you guys have that covered

Game on!

Edit - 8/7/2016
Modified list

I have  VERY little experience with most of the list, but a decent amount on three.

I'll do:

Millipede
SFII
SMB- been 30 years since i played

1943 Kai - never seen it but hear it's like 1943

All others on the list I've either NEVER played or have less than 3-4 plays EVER. If time allows I'll try all of them.

I have experience with:
Millipede

Big kong

I will play others, but these are the main attempts I will be doing.

Will be focusing on shooters and any other game I happen to like. Sadly I've no experience with most of the games in the compo having only tried a few. I dislike CK clones like Big Kong, but I figure we might as well press the advantage we have on this one (cue the Team DKF "Hooah!!"). Beyond this, it will make more sense for me to prioritise towards the close of the compo to see what's worth giving it another shot. Just don't know how well I'm gonna go, but I won't be making a ripple on the fighting games.

I see WCopeland has removed his scores,, (GOOD ENERGY?)
How does one do that? Thx

Hi Daniel,

I removed my scores because there was some question over whether I could be impartial while running the tournament site. Please continue to go good.

Its stuff like this that makes me not want to play in these things.  Sigh....

As for catching up to MARP, I can see Xelnia's spreadsheet, specifically the third tab (Site Data) now has DKF and MARP color coded.  When it gets to be the last week especially, we need to focus on games where we pass multiple MARPers with one submission.  Like 1943 right now.  If someone from DKF could somehow beat nii-san's 2.6M, they'd get the 43 points for 6th place, but they'd also knock at least 6 MARPers down 1 more slot, for an additional net gain of 6 points.  For games like Paperboy or SMB, you can see there aren't that many MARP scores in the top 15.  Making a large net gain on those games is just about impossible for those of us already on the scoreboard.  During the closing days, it's more productive to concentrate on other games, where we have more of an opportunity to pass multiple MARPs at once.  In the meantime, it's just do the best each of us can, gain a couple of points here and there, and GET PEOPLE TO SUBMIT MORE SCORES.

I could have beaten his 2.6. You get 1 million for finishing and i missed it by like 3 guns. Got screwed actually.. I think im in 8th now but realistically as i dont know how to "point press" in that game (4.3 million must be some crazy point pressing) i dont see much more than 3.7-3.9 for me at this point so not sure its really worth grinding more for me. I'll post a breakout on what to do but getting to stage 10 is actually pretty simple if you just get the shotgun and the airplanes everything using the "Weapon Start Cheat" everytime.

I have been thinking about this a little bit, but I think it's much more valuable to try and get most everyone to submit on every title. What I'm saying is that it's much easier to pass your 8th place guy's score by 6 ranks than to try and knock the other teams down. If a player has submitted for every title, I think your idea makes sense.

My thought on the most efficient way to earn points is to look at the games with the lowest 8th place points:
Block Out 8th place gives us 11 points currently. If I score in the middle of the pack with 31 points, it would be a net gain of 20 points (minus whoever is passed i guess).

A chain is only as strong as it's weakest link.
