Title: barrel board warp/cheat
Post by: ezkutz on January 07, 2015, 11:33:43 pm
hello, i have a question you guys might be able to answer.

back in the 80's i played a dk arcade machine on which you could level warp from the first barrel board.
no idea what roms were in the machine, i recall it being dedicated cabinet but i couldn't tell the difference then.

you would climb the first ladder and nudge to the right a bit , then leap towards the right bottom corner.
done correctly you would slip through the floor and advance levels.

i've tried a few versions on mame but haven't been able to re-create it.

anyone know/seen/heard of this before?

I believe that the barrel skip glitch was also in the first release of DK, Possibly, Chrispy would know for sure  <popcorn>

The spreadsheet was a work in progress as evidenced by this thread https://donkeykongforum.net/index.php?topic=534 (https://donkeykongforum.net/index.php?topic=534)

but I imgur-ed it anyway Kappa

Oops, I messed one thing up in that speech in the stream.

The weird narrower "walls" are actually in Japan Set 1.

Set 3 is the oldest, Set 1 in the middle, Set 2 is the most recent. (I don't know why MAME numbered them this way, usually they go in reverse-chronological order). This site shows the chronology: http://tcrf.net/Donkey_Kong_%28Arcade%29 (http://tcrf.net/Donkey_Kong_%28Arcade%29)

They brought in the pixels in Set 1 in order to keep people from doing the floor jump. Then they fixed the floor, put the walls back where they belonged, and released Set 2. After that came the US sets.

So Japan Set 1 is the oddball. You can try the weird walljumping yourself in MAME.  <Allen>

In chronological order, the ROM sets are:

Japan Set 3
Japan Set 1
Japan Set 2
US Set 2
US Set 1

Nobody knows, or will likely ever know, the revision dates, except for the last revision (US Set 1), which was released in December of 1981, which is also when they started making the two-board sets.
