Post by: marky_d on December 19, 2014, 03:04:54 pm
That's right. On Sunday, December 21st at "around" 3pm CST, Scott Hardesty will be going for the world record on your favorite game and mine...Crazy Climber (1980). This will be played at The Place Retro Arcade, and will be live streamed. TG has the current arcade WR listed as 487,150 from 1982. Stream link below:

Of course now the game knows, and has plenty of advance time to prepare the cruelest cheating it can muster.

And anybody who has played this fker knows what it can muster...

I will definitely be watching this.  :D

Hope I get to watch this.  I used to own a Nichibutsu Crazy Climber.  I think it's a great spectator game, very suspenseful.  But he'll need to shoot higher than TG.  Check out this thread on KLOV:

Post your Crazy Climber scores!!

Kerry Stillinger is the man to beat and he has posted a lot of great tips.  His last post was August 15, 2014.  His current top score is 602,250.  I didn't see any mention of how many lives he's starting with but I do believe it is three.  I've bumped the thread there to ask, and to mention this record attempt.

Edit:  Here are a couple of cool things about Crazy Climber that Kerry posted on KLOV:

He got 311k today.  Great effort.  I watched the last 1.5 hours or so and he got screwed several times by the falling sign and occasionally the girders.

Hello-
  I'm Kerry Stillinger.
Thanks SanTe for pointing me to this post.  I wasn't able to catch the stream.  Is there any way to see it post transmission?
How long did he play?  Apparently longer than 1.5 hours!

A record beating game lasts about 15 minutes.

If I'm shooting for a good game, I'll kill it off if I die on the 2nd building.
The reasoning there is if you die on 2, you can still play another several buildings, but not having much chance to get to building 10.

It's just the best use of your time to kill it off if you don't have a good start.
That's why I'm curious how the streamer goes about it.

Fun game, but pretty humbling given the random items that can't be avoided.

Kerry

On Twitch.tv usually you can just go into the streamer's profile and select "Past Broadcasts," but there weren't any when I checked only a few minutes after he went offline, and there are no highlight clips saved either.  I suspect they delete them immediately or Twitch has an option not to keep anything.

He played for about 3 hours total.  I saw a few games in the 160-180k range and several under 100k.

I didn't see him kill any games off.  I did see him lose lives occasionally due to impatience or taking an unnecessary risk.

Ice water blood this guy has!

I didn't watch the entirety of the stream, but from what I did watch, I didn't see any raging whatsoever.

In fact, it may have been a new Crazy Climber world record for lack-of-rage.  :D
