Title: Are you going to the Kong Off 3?
Post by: ChrisP on June 24, 2013, 02:44:38 am
Yes, no, or maybe?

I don't wanna do this as a poll because I want to know where every specific person is at this point.

Me: YES (so long as there's no major disaster or issue)

Got my flights selected and my hotel picked out! Haven't pulled the trigger yet, but I'm gonna do it soon.

Honestly it kinda depends on how everything plays out. How Jordan/Richie handle the top 12.

I'm leaning towards yes. I was at KO2 as a wildcard last year and it was a lot of fun.

I'll be submitting my 1,023,600 officially, and I'll still have 3 hours of TG video review time to use up within a year...so if my current best doesn't get me into the top 12 I'll be trying for a higher score.

It would be great for all of us if TG would explain how they're handling the top 12.

My intention is to go at this time. The Top 12 thing is starting to be the elephant in the room at this point. Everyone on the "DK" community seems to be behind the Top 12 Arcade/M.A.M.E combined setup with the higher of your 2 scores being the one that is counted.

Since it's not been made clear it could be just Top 12 Arcade scores (Which means Dean Saglio and Jeff Wilms both would have been left out of the dedicate machine scenario at KO2 folks and would they have come and played Wildcard?!?! Heck with the no restart rule its entirely possible they could have both missed Sundays cut just saying since they would have only had 3 games to play period)

Since these WC qualifiers are both Arcade and MAME my hope is the top 12 is the same but that is something for Jourdan and Richie to decide. I want to hang out and have a good time but would like to play also as its a lotta money to just chill ;)

Yeah, I don't know a single person in this community that supports an Arcade Only policy for the KO3. I would like to think there would be some kind of mutiny if they go in that direction because Donkey Kong is owned by the players and our community not a for-profit organization that is charging us money to jump through its hoops. Heck we could just start having our own Kong Off so we can get the best Arcade/Mame players. I am not going at this point due to time and money constraints. It has been a stretch just to get the arcade machine and a new laptop to stream better. If for some reason this changes and the wife is ok with the visit to Colorado then maybe I will be there. Though if they do Arcade Only, then I may not come even if I could. That would just be wrong! Vince was invited to the first KO because he got over a million on Mame and put up a killscreen there. And then Dean and Jeff both got 1st and 2nd in the KO2 and they were both Mame players. There is no justification for any mame exclusions for the KO3 because it is based on skill. We want the real top 12 going at it, not just what people pay for, or what fits into a for-profit's marketing scheme. That would be an unforgivable sin against the community.

The travel will definitely be a much bigger deal for the European players.

I have to be honest: one of my purposes in this thread is to figure out who I'm dealing with in terms of competition.  ;D It would be nice to meet them, but on the other hand, it will be easier for me and all the wildcards to not have to fight through guys like Jon and Svavar!

As for you Ben, you're coming and it's not optional.

Jeff, you really only bubbled this weekend "on paper." In reality, you were effectively in the money.

Check it out:

Phil Tudose: 1,051,600 - - - - - In the top 12 now (if there's any justice in the world)
Jeff Wolfe: 997,800
Corey Chambers: 964,500 - - - - - Will not be attending
Ben Falls: 869,100  - - - - - Gonna be in the top 12 by KO3 (probably)
Robbie Lakeman: 851,300
John McKinnel: 753,600  - - - - - Sounds like he will not be attending
Chris Psaros: 696,800
Dan Desjardins: 688,600
--------That's only 4! Which opens the "effective top 8" to...---------------------------------------
Jeff Harrist: 678,200
Brian Allen: 637,800
Shane Mosher: 637,400
Ethan Daniels: 605,900

There is a very good chance I won't be going.  I made my goal of attending at least one of these when I went last year, and for me that's good enough. 8)

I'm doing my best to scratch together the money to go, so as it is now my plan is to be there! oh yeah. I've had the idea stuck in my head since I did my first kill screen. It would just be excellent go and meet up with people who share the same fascination. I have a lot of time off over the summer after the end of june and my plan is to try my best to get into the top 12 but I feel there are quite a few people aiming for it so I'm just hoping to get into a good DK groove over the summer. I was kind of forced not to play in the WCR3 because of a lot of pressure on my studies but I will most likely take part in the upcoming ones

I know it's way too early to call anything yet. I just thought it was ironic since I was the Wildcard bubble boy at KO2.

Oh you mean for KO2 Day 2. I thought you were talking about your bubblish position right now on the TG scoreboard, where you could sneak into the Top 12 if enough people can't make it to KO3.

I actually never got the story on who exactly moved on to Day 2 at KO2, and how many there were. Was it 8?

I guess I should have said "also". The irony is that I've been on the wrong side of the Wildcard bubble twice now.

There were 18 original Wildcards and 9 moved on to Sunday. Everyone above me in the final standings who was a Wildcard made it to Day 2.

...Unless you keep playing and get better!

Brian, I've seen you get like halfway through the game on your first man! If you keep playing, I'm sure you can get a 850k killscreen, or thereabouts. Don't sell yourself short!

Besides, I PROMISE YOU, the Kong Off is most fun because you get to hang out with all the people. So, in the end, it's not a big deal whether or not you do amazing (but, indeed, try your best!).

True. At the Kong Off 2, the most boring part for me was to play Donkey Kong, lol. Hanging around was the fun part.

However, if TG/Richie Knucklez don't accept MAME scores as a "top 12" score, as many people have been suggesting as a possibility, then I'm not going to. :)

If they are not letting Mame  scores in  Dean would have never been in KO1

He wouldn't really have any scores in other then mame if it wasn't for Kong Off Events.

So that wouldn't be  fair to change rules now.

I wouldn't  be going to the Kong Off if this is the case.

Whats the point of these Wild Card Events ? About 90 percent of the players are Mame players.
I'll... probably go? ;>

The people making the rules are the ones who decide if they are fair or not. They decided who gets in and who does not. They can change the rules, make exceptions and even exclude players that may me to busy guarding a bridge at the time...

When the time comes, Chris, we should use the results of this list to make a group FB message (or... can we do group messages on DKF?) where people can post their cell #'s. I made one last year for the KO2 for a bunch of people, and I think it came quite in handy.

I'd actually like to know if Phil Tudose is even planning to go!

Which is another reason why I'm making this thread to gauge things.

If Phil's not even going, then the MAME concern will go back to being a moot point (for the moment at least).

Probably best to think positive about TG and how they're gonna handle it. If the entire lineup (except for maybe 12th place ;D) is unanimous that "x" player should be in, whether Phil or Ben or whoever, I think Richie will be cool about it. It's Richie.

id still like to know what the rules are regarding MAME scores though. i assume theyll be accepted

if not ill just have to spend some time at jeff w's place this summer and put up a 1.05 on that KO2 cab of his ;)

also...get that fucking killscreen already allen. if youre not going then why would i even bother? 8)

Good point. I hadn't thought of that. Ahem... When I said I was 17, it was actually a typo; I meant to write 27 all this time. Whoops! ;P

But seriously: Is there any law against 18-year-olds entering bars in Colorado (since I will be 18 by the time of the Kong Off 3)? If not, does Richie Knucklez have any rule against allowing minors into his establishment? I know that I've been in bars before here in Kentucky, even back when I was around 3 or 4 years old. Didn't Vince go when he was 19 or 20 or something? Usually age restriction laws and rules in the USA are either set to 16, 18, or 21; if it is the case that Vincent was allowed in before his 21st birthday, then odds are that I'll be able to get in, too.

I guess if I can't even get in the place, I probably won't go... ;>

Edit: Just learned the 1-UP isn't owned by Richie nor is it the same place as where the Kong Off 1 was held, and that minors aren't allowed inside... so I guess I'll show up at the Kong Off 6 ;D

Edit again: Vince and Dean both said that minors were allowed to Kong Off 2, and were only required to wear a different color bracelet to signify that they weren't of drinking age. They said that even Jordan's kids were running around in there, so I imagine that it will be a non-issue. I guess I will show up at the Kong Off 3!

Five months early might be excessive but what the hell, I was excited.

I will get there on Thursday night and leave Monday morning. I have a hotel in mind so you can pencil me off the "room share" list. (If you knew what I did in my sleep, you would not want to share a room with me. Trust me. This is no joke!)

Everyone who is thinking of splitting a room with me:

I just started classes this week. By next friday (the 13th! *gasp*) I will have talked with all my teachers about needing to leave for the Kong Off. I will then be buying my tickets and booking a room. I'll put my card down for the room, and people can pay me with cash/check/etc for their portion of the costs on probably Sunday afternoon or Monday morning after the Kong Off. When I book the room, I'll contact you with the room number.

I'll be sure to post the cost per night of the room before I book it so we can all see who wants in and for how long so we can know the expected price per person.

Title: Denver mint anyone?
Post by: hchien on September 05, 2013, 06:43:47 pm
George Leutz, Youmee and I will be taking a tour of the Denver mint on Wed Nov 13 at 3:30pm.  If anyone is arriving early and interested in going to the Denver mint, you are welcome to join us on the tour.  I believe it will be fairly brief (my guess is 1/2 hour) and it's free.  It's also relatively close to the Crowne Plaza.  You need to leave all your stuff at the hotel as they have a long list of prohibited items:

Permitted items
• A palm sized wallet/change purse that can fit in your pocket.
•Cameras, cell phones. You will be asked to turn off your devices before you enter the building.
•Medical items necessary for the safety and well-being of the visitor.

Prohibited items include, but are not limited to:
•Handbags, purses, fanny packs (that's American for bum bag), tote bags, backpacks and packages
•Strollers
•Food, drinks, tobacco products, lighters and matches.
•Weapons (including pocket knives and personal protective devices and barrel smashing hammers).

If you are interested, make your reservations early as they fill up pretty far in advance (we missed out last year).  Right now, it's wide open.  Here's a link for reservations:

Yes! I just made reservations for Jeremy and me. I want to see where and how the quarters are made.

Great!  I think I know what Jeremy looks like from fb.  Please introduce yourselves if I/we don't recognize you.

Vincent, you need to get in on this.  I heard they have lots of quarters there and you will need all of them!

You may be able to recognize him by a wild beard, barring unforeseen circumstances requiring shaving  :'(

I am putting together private a group on Facebook right now for all those that are going to the KO3. The group will be for anyone who is willing to post their contact info as well as any significant plans they have for particular days (skiing, zoo, museum, smoking pot with the homeless outside the bar, etc) so that people can more easily coordinate and get hold of one another when in Denver. I did this last year and it seemed to help quite a bit (especially for those without smartphones). If you do not feel comfortable giving out your info in this way, that is understandable, and you won't be forced to. Just wanted to let people on here to know to check their FB for the group shortly. Thanks!

Edit: If you are going to Denver for the KO3 and are not in this group within the next 12 hours and would like to be, let me know. I've asked people in the FB group already to help me add any people to the group that I might have missed.
