Title: How to get past the Donkey Kong level 4+ spring boards for beginners.
Post by: dollopuss on August 30, 2019, 12:15:36 pm
Hey, all!

I made a short video for beginners on L4+ spring strats:

I will most likely make more beginner videos like these for other boards and strats.

Dollopuss, it's okay to just come out and say,"Nike, I'm making you some instructional videos." <Allen>

I didn't have you specifically in mind, Nike, but if it helps! :)

xelnia's Spring Theory thread is certainly unbelievably detailed and invaluable to understanding the minutia of the spring board in depth, but I just felt that a short video with steps explained and an Allen freakout in it would be useful for people struggling with locking springs down. I know I had a lot of trouble with it and save stated it for days and days.

It's a great video Doll. Where was this when I needed it 6 months ago? Just a twinkle in your eye, I imagine.

P.S. -  Nice Allen addition! I just wanted to point out that was a level 3 death, Wht da?  <Allen>

Hi Thanks very much for the video.
I do not spot all in/outs. Please write down the steps here.

As I understood your video:
- wait for long spring in the middle yellow block
- go towards ladder
- let the spring go over your head
- if the spring coming after that one long spring is not a short spring - go back to position
- of the spring coming after that one long spring is a short spring - go for the ladder

?

That tip was crucial and explain why I crash on spring board level. My eyes are not what is used to be so I need "markers" to lead the path to take at which crucial point.

Enjoyed this a lot! Great work!
So just.a few questions from a beginners stand point (211800pb)
I used to just run on the right spring and it would work, maybe because I didn?t stop I avoided some near misses but never the less I beat the boards numerous times.
Is stopping but not climbing the ladder and shifting my head to see the next spring land the way to go. It worked for me 50/50 but I don?t have save state to work on it. I notice you climb a little up the ladder before you retreat is that necessary? Or should I just stop before it and wait for a guaranteed short before starting the climb while learning the safe way.

Nice Vid, I watched this for the Allen bit <Allen>,
Allen I hope you don't mind me saying it made me laugh hard, but with you mate not at you ;)

Animalchild, I'm no expert (PB 358K) but my advice is take every little advantage you can on DK. Starting up the ladder will become second nature after a bit of practice, you will become more comfortable and still have plenty of time to retreat when its a no go. This vid has everything you need to know to get a KS and in the long run if you are pressing for higher scores efficiency becomes an important element.

Cheers

Yes, this will work most of the time, but there are occasions where this will NOT work as demonstrated in the video @ 1:49.

Yes, as this will indicate if it's a short spring or a long spring coming next. The short spring will give you the go ahead to go up safely while a long spring will tell you to wait near the ladder or even move slightly back to the left to not get hit by the next long spring.

It isn't necessary. That's just the way I learned to do it by watching Hank Chien. You can wait next to the ladder if that's more comfortable for you.

Thanks for this breakdown of your video. I?m getting deaths still but at least now I?m retreating and and surging other times, I think sometimes I?m going on a medium spring that looks short when I?m rushing but I know it?s one step back two steps forward with something like this.

Francoisadt: What did you mean by 'middle yellow block'? There are only two.

Also, Dollopuss: I've made it to Level 6 a few times, but I think most of that was chance. In order to perfect the Spring Stage, do I need to get to a point where my eyes concentrate on the springs, and not Mario?

He means the yellow top of the elevator in the center of the screen.

Overtime, you will build muscle memory when moving Mario to the right and up the ladder while looking at the springs appearing from the left. However, some people are able to use their peripheral vision to see where the spring lands while watching Mario. There's no single fool proof way other than practice practice practice, but my video should give a good starting point on what to concentrate on.

Thats correct, that is what I mean - at elevator, in the centre

There's nothing beyond the 4th springs but madness and despair.

Ah the reason I was having deaths while stopping at the ladder was because the ultra short spring will flip your feet if you pause to watch the next spring.

I think this combination is so rare that you almost don't need to worry about it.  I've never had it since I've started blindly moving him to the bottom of the ladder, then quickly flicking right/up when I see a spring enter the screen up high.

I'm currently working on a video to help people with this stage and will add the link here soon.
