I'm far from being an expert on DK - and no, I'm far from being a Tim fan so I'm not saying this as a supporter of his cry baby posts (after he told me to stop watching his stream during the last qualifier - WTF Tim? don't f**in' play if you can't handle someone watching you)... but how did Steve Wiebe and Billy Mitchell qualify for this? Have they even posted a DK score in the last 12 months?

but how did Steve Wiebe and Billy Mitchell qualify for this?
The Kong Off uses the top 12 TG-verified arcade scores to create the line-up, regardless of when those scores were achieved. Billy and Steve Wiebe's scores from several years ago are still good enough to be within that group. There's a chance they won't be "Top 12" by this time next year if they don't increase their scores. ;D

In my opinion this will be the most competitive Kong Off ever. Yep two of the top 12 are not going. Phil Tudose because of TG's new rule, and Mark Kiehl because he realizes that Donkey Kong Junior is a much better game. 8) But despite the loss of two Kong Off people we have a couple of reasons why this is going to be the best Kong Off. First off, Phil Tudose was not part of any previous Kong Off which mean the loss of him doesn't make this Kong Off less as good as the last one. Second, Ross more than makes up for the loss of Mark Kiehl. In fact his replacement adds 84k in points to the overall total for dedicated machines. Now add to the fact that a few people on the list have actually become better at Donkey Kong over the last year, and now you have a field where the play is better than ever.

I'm not sure it's so cut and dry.
Pro:
The average PB of the players is higher (but no one's PB will ever decrease, so this isn't really a valid argument).
I think a better argument is that there are more players overall this year, so you're selecting the top 12 of a larger group. While some people have 'retired' I think more have entered. I've never counted, but that's my impression.
Con:
At the 1st 2 KO's no one invited turned down the invite and the best MAME players were included (meaning the best players were indeed all there). This is not true this year.
