Title: DK Data Library of Memorable Games
Post by: stella_blue on May 31, 2013, 06:17:54 pm

I've been meaning to create this topic for a while.  My goal is to maintain a library of data summaries for selected DK games.  Obviously, there is no substitute for watching the actual gameplay, but there is no guarantee of online longevity.  Videos and INP files (TG, MARP, Twitch TV, YouTube) can be corrupted, deleted, or replaced.  Hopefully, the game summaries here will serve as permanent data snapshots.  I think of them as the DK equivalents of MLB box scores.

Each data summary reports the score for every individual stage and level, points resulting from deaths (and on what stages they occurred), the cumulative score, an overall pace calculation at the end of each completed level (beginning with L5), and a few basic L5+ summary statistics (maximum, minimum, and average).

I considered tracking a few other items (grouped by board type, where applicable):
I excluded all of the above, since I'm recording the data manually.  It's certainly useful information, but it also promises to be an exercise in tedium that I presently don't want to experience firsthand.  A custom software application, monitoring the relevant DK memory locations, is a more elegant solution (and a possible future project).

The first 3 games presented (2 by Dean, 1 by Robbie) appear elsewhere on this forum; I've reposted them here so that all summaries can be accessed from a central location.  All other games are new additions.

I welcome any comments or suggestions for more effective data presentation.

Big, big, big...

Indeed.  The only negative statistic is the noticeable absence of "good" deaths (only 5,100 total points for the first 3).  Then again, all deaths before L22 occurred on the conveyor (2) and rivet (1) stages, where you often "get whatever you get".

A comparison of the L5+ stats between Dean's 2 most recent "deep" games and this one shows an average point increase for all 4 stages (barrels: 300, conveyors: 400, elevators: 400, rivets: 500).  Granted, a pair of games represents a ridiculously small sample size, but the stronger stage averages (combined with a more typical 5,000 points per death) predict:

Score increase = 17 x ( ( 3 x 300 ) + 400 + 400 + 500 ) + ( ( 3 x 5000 ) - 5100 ) = 47,300

Adjusted score = 1,167,400 + 47,300 = 1,214,700 (1.199 million, excluding the points from all 4 deaths)

Easier said than done, but I remain hopeful that it could happen before the end of 2013.

Good job on these game analyzes, Scott. Pretty cool to see! Keep doing them ;-).

Quote
Adjusted score = 1,167,400 + 47,300 = 1,214,700 (1.199 million, excluding the points from all 4 deaths)

I always knew Dean was good enough to get 1,199, but 1.2m is WITHOUT a doubt out of reach for him!

Agreed.  It's been 14 months since 1.167M, I believe 1.2M will happen within the next couple of months.  I don't know why I believe that, I just do.  And, of course 300K for me.  ::)

No worries, Jason.  All tools, large and small, are welcome in this thread!   ;)

I believe max/min are for L5+.

Hank is correct.  It's not explicitly stated, but the basic stage & level stats are for L05 and beyond.

Nice breakdown Scott.

So, what happened on 10-1? I'll have to watch the replay and see. Had 3 "pace robbers" on that level 10-1, 10-2, and 10-6.

15,200 early first death....that's actually a good death early. Throws you deep into your pace early. I thought he might have deliberately did this until I looked at the replay.

Additional Information

The Level 01 stage scores are estimates, since Level 1-1 is missing from the Twitch stream (it begins near the end of the rivet stage).  The 17,800 level score is accurate, but I chose an arbitrary 9200/8600 breakdown for the individual stages.

I realize it's probably a long shot, but can anyone recall the exact 1-1 score?  If so, please let me know and I will make the necessary adjustments.

I was thinking of creating a similar spreadsheet to analyze my own games. I was wondering how do you figure the pace column? Do you have a formula you can share to determine the pace value?

Sure thing, Shawn.  Currently, I only calculate pace at the end of each completed level.  Is that suitable for your purpose, or would you prefer a calculation that can be used after each individual stage?

Title: Re: DK Data Library of Memorable Games
Post by: stella_blue on October 01, 2013, 10:05:56 am

Hey Shawn,

Let's start with the pace calculation at the end of a completed level, since it's the simplest model.  If you require a more flexible formula, one that can be used at any point in the game, I'll build one.

There are only 3 components to the overall pace value:

1.  Current Score (actual)
2.  Future Levels (estimated)
3.  Future Deaths (estimated)

We'll use Dean's recent WR game as our example (at the end of Level 14):

1.  Current Score = 759,300

The current score includes the 5,800 points gained from the 2 deaths on L8-2 (2,900) and L8-4 (2,900).

2.  Future Levels = 427,840

This value is calculated by taking the average score per level (points from deaths are not included) and multiplying by the number of remaining levels.

Level 05:
63,800
Level 06:
64,900
Level 07:
63,500
Level 08:
60,000
Level 09:
63,900
Level 10:
54,400
Level 11:
62,400
Level 12:
59,500
Level 13:
57,500
Level 14:
61,300

Total Points Excluding Deaths (L05 to L14):
611,200
Number of Levels Completed (L05 to L14):
10
Number of Levels Remaining (L15 to L21):
7

So, estimated score on future levels = 7 x ( 611,200 / 10 ) = 427,840

3.  Future Deaths = 5,700

I use a standard value of 5,000 for the first 3 deaths, and 700 for the killscreen.  There are other approaches.  Mitch uses 5,000 until the first death has occurred.  He then uses the points from death #1 as an estimate for the second and third deaths.  After the second death, the average points from deaths #1 and #2 are used to estimate the 3rd death.  I prefer to stick with the standard value, since I'm not convinced that previous deaths are a reliable predictor for future ones.  You should use whatever value and/or method works best for you.

In our example, 2 deaths have already occurred.  We'll use 5,000 for the 3rd death, and 700 for the 4th (on Level 22-1).

So, estimated points from future deaths = 5,000 + 700 = 5,700

Overall Pace (without rounding) = 759,300 + 427,840 + 5,700 = 1,192,840

As a final step, I divide the result by 100, round to 0 decimal places, then multiply by 100 (since a valid DK score must be an even multiple of 100 points).

Overall Pace (rounded to nearest 100) = 1,192,800

The rounding option is a matter of personal preference.  It's another choice that's entirely up to you.

I believe I have the oldest HS DK Game still on vhs...availible for public view.....this is the same  one that Seth Gordan said was constantly disputed and impossible to verify.

The score is 879,200 with a kill screen played on 8/16/2000 confimed and verified with a witness at the end who can clearly be heard off camera.

However, even though I can prove that the producers of KOK intentionaly lied and made a fake DOC under false pretenses  by supplying not only video evidence but also a witness matters not. These people got the connections, money and what they say goes.

I even went so far as to call a division of WB studio who handles the KOK  and asked them why they  made a documentary about my subject material without my authorization and when can I expect my check like the other people received.

At this point thier friendly demeanor turned defensive and this is the response I got (I'm paraphrasing a little)" our studio fully stands by our decision and KOK is a legitimate DOC "

I replied "ya think so?

Then I gave them the link to The King of Con, the counter DOC by Dwayne Richards that is based on facts unlike the rubbish DOC Seth Gordon put together so his pal Steve and a few select insiders like Billy Walter and Steve Saunders could turn a buck.

I keep offering to show old VHS this to any event that is held but people like the denial better
I really want Steve Wiebie and Seth Gordon to watch it.

I cant afford to travel to these things but I will see about streaming it..not that it would matter.

As far as the actual machine it was set on 8/16/2000, Greg Sakundiak of Canada now owns that piece of gaming history.

So these arcade collecting  chumps that want to spend big bucks buying Steve original machine "thinking"  it was the game that "first" broke Billys 1982 record are really  just wasting thier money as far as a historical context and documentation goes.

Hey Tim, if you stream that game (and if the video quality is good enough that I can read the score after each stage), would you object to the summary and stats being posted here?  I think it would be a great addition to this thread.

But wait a minute..............Seth Gordan, famed researcher/ producer of such documentaries as   KOK said there was "no way" to verify this very  game I'm talking about and besides..it was constantly disputed remember?             Do you think actually, for one minute that the  good hearted, Honest hollywood movie scammers...........er.....I mean "producers" of KOK  would actually lie to you.? Do you really think the good people at TG would allow an official score on thier "Official" scoreboard" to be  covered up so others could profit?

Do you think Steve Wiebe would lie to you? Why even the Wikipedia artical, Wikipedia, the all knowing oracal of things true states this very game I played was merely just a "claim" How dare you not believe the media propaganda ;)

Really ,I'm just being sarcastic here......;)

you could probably guess that.........  I mean no disrespect to you Stella_blue :).....and thanks for asking :)

I'll see what I can do about broadcasting that 8/16/2000 game but here's what I remember:

The begining of the tape (1st 30 seconds) are kind of scratchy but still  clear (tape probably stretched no doubt from constant re-winding as I used the same tape on many, many tries.)

I basically just ran boards....I did not use the bottom hammer on the barrel boards.

My spring boards were not as efficent time wise as they are now.

I was on L=21-6 with one man left and knew the kill screen was the next board L=22. I knew if I cleared L=21-6 I would come just shy of beating Billys 1982 score. So I intentionally died on L=21-6 and used the extra man I had left to get those extra points I nedded and I did. Point pressing in its infancy I guess.

Let me see about broadcasting it.   It will just expose Seth Gordan and Ed Cuntingham once and for all as liars that knowingly and with malice of forethought made a fraudulant DOC based on an accomplishment I did 3 years before Steve Wiebe.

I will also just bolster more interest in Dwayne Richards DOC and give Dwayne's DOC that much more credibility that it deserves.

No misunderstanding here.  Since its last tune-up, my sarcasm detector has been working flawlessly.   ;)

So, assuming you broadcast that 08/16/2000 game, might I compile the game summary with your blessing?  It's obviously not representative of your current skill level, but it was (and still is) a memorable game that merits inclusion here.  Also, it will allow me (and this is the selfish part) to produce a historical DK document that isn't available anywhere else.

First of all, I would love to watch this.  Second of all, it's pretty cool that you sac'd a man on 21-6.  A few of us had discussed actually taking a "suicidal top hammer" on 21-6, if it meant increasing points (in leu of a trip to 22-1); I know this isn't quite the same tactic, but it's really freaking cool to see that you were using something like this way back in 2000, without any help from the "communal knowledge base".   I also lost a 3rd man on 21-6, but it wasn't a sac.

It's pretty cool to learn that the WR score that took down billy had a sac'd man on level 21.

My 1980 Magnovox top loader VCR is not working. (its almost as heavy as a pr7820 laserdisc player). One of these days I'll have to try living in the 21st century instead of the late 20th century.   I'll have to find another VCR.

Tim, I bought a VCR at a yard sale for $2.00 last year.  If you can't find one (no remote) at a local thrift store for cheap, I would be willing to ship this one to you!  I also have a DVD/VCR combo (no remote) that was given to me.  I really want you to be able to broadcast the game, can you tell?   ;D

Per Mitch's suggestion, I will be adding an index to the initial post in this thread.  The "Table of Contents" will list all game summaries posted thus far, in chronological order by date achieved.  The entries will include the usual header information that appears above each game summary.  Additionally, a new "Details" column will contain a direct link to the relevant summary, providing easy navigation to a particular game of interest.

Thanks for the idea, Mitch!

EDIT:  Index has been created, and will be updated with each addition to the library.

Additional Information

For much of the Level 16-1 (barrel) and 16-2 (conveyor) stages, neither the current score nor the bonus timer was visible on-screen.  In addition, the stream was experiencing noticeable lag during that portion of the game.  As a result, I have estimated the scores for those 2 boards.  I'm fairly confident that both are pretty close (+/- 200 points).

Congratulations on your first killscreen, Dan!

Now, if you would only get rid of a couple of those crappy songs on your 1980s playlist.   ;)

Hi Brian,

Jason (JNugent) posed a similar question a while back.  Levels 01 through 04 are not included in the maximum, minimum, and average stats.  Those calculations only apply to Level 05 and beyond.

From my initial post in this topic:

Each data summary reports the score for every individual stage and level, points resulting from deaths (and on what stages they occurred), the cumulative score, an overall pace calculation at the end of each completed level (beginning with L5), and a few basic L5+ summary statistics (maximum, minimum, and average).

Sorry for the confusion.

EDIT:  I see that Dan has already provided the explanation.  Notoriously slow typing on my part.   :)

Thanks Scott for putting this together. You can see with the low 108K start I came out the level 5 gate strong for a while, but must have backed off after my first death. Ashame to see the pace drop as low as it did by the end.

Dave, I performed a very basic "what if" analysis on your game, with the following edits:
Even with the pace reduction during the game's latter half, the KS score projects to 1.079 million.

I have reason to believe Jeff cheated in this game.  His rivet average of 8,300 is impossible without use of the hammer.

Seriously though, that's a crazy rivet average.  All that no hammer must have helped.

Hopefully I'll have something higher soon.  I may have actually done an analysis on that game already.  I'll see if I can find it... will save you some trouble of deciphering scores from poorly focused streams.

Sounds good.  Vincent keeps pestering me to post a summary of your 897K killscreen game on MAME.  I suggested displaying it alongside his first killscreen of 809K.  He's been uncharacteristically silent since then.   ;)

I don't remember the rivets much from that game but the avg shows I probably didn't get @!%$. I had looked at my 1.05 game and was concentrating on upping my barrel and elevators scores. I know I lost quite a bit on conveyors with only 6 free passes after the start compared to 10 for the 1.05 game.

O.K. Scott , I won't play that video (no one should) I don't want to add a hindrance to the great contribution this thread is. Hank you should play some no-hammer it's more fun than all that point-pressing.

Dave, I performed a very basic "what if" analysis on your game, with the following edits:
  • Adjusted the start to a more typical 118K
  • Replaced the L12 spring death (0 points) with a 10K sac on L21-5
  • Eliminated the final spring death, substituting your L05+ stage averages for the last 3 boards on L21
Even with the pace reduction during the game's latter half, the KS score projects to 1.079 million.

That's cool you did that little extra analysis, yeah I usually get better starts, but I need to stop backing off early to keep the 1.1M going. Havent had the urge to play much lately, maybe tomorrow.

Thanks Scott, I was gonna do my own (to see just how horribly I'm doing certain things, especially elevators lately), but now I don't have to. 5,200 avg. elevators. Barf!

I went into that game with the goal of Mike G's 953K, which was in third at that point of the tourney (and also probably about the best I can do with my current skills), planning to do 45K levels early and then up-shift to 53K levels later on, but I had to go double-hammer early in L8 and 9 to make up for that BUTT AWFUL L7.

Then I lost my last reserve life on 17-1 and gave up on the double-hammers and the 953 target. I switched to gunning for Jry's 905 at that point, which worked out.  ;D I was all over the place though. Sloppy!

I have one potentially useless suggestion:

The fire objects may be more likely to oblige your requests (to climb up or down ladders) if you ask politely.

Be sure to use the magic word (hint:  it's not "asshole").   ;)

Am I being paranoid, or did I witness a deliberate attempt to point press the final 2 barrel boards on Level 21, thereby gaining enough points to squeak past my personal best?

Why, I oughta . . .   ;)

I promise it was only to place higher in the tournament ,hehe
and thank you for the stats,
its seems my elevators are remarkably low scoring on most games, no doubt due to the fact I only ever go on the longest spring,

looks like I'll need to fix that.

Cheers Scott.

I did notice a number of stubborn elevator boards during your game, where the long springs kept coming in pairs, forcing one retreat after another.  In those situations I often grow impatient and end up doing something reckless, with predictably unfortunate consequences.

Hello, security?  I have a disturbance to report at the DK library.  We've got a shirtless Canadian running around, sporadically yelling either "Yolo!" or "Ank!" while performing nonsensical arithmetic calculations.  He's frightening the legitimate WR contenders.  You know who I'm talking about?  Yeah, that's him.

He had a 7,000 rivet without any hammer?  Kreygasm

Good conveyor and spring averages too.

These stats tell the hard truth. We are definitely already at the point of having to push, and not merely survive to the kill screen, if somebody is going to beat the NH record.

There was no public video of Hank's 1.138 game when Scott started this project. Since it's his project and it/he is on indefinite hiatus, I don't think you can expect to see any more posts here. Hank's game is available on kongtrac.kr though: 1,138,600 (http://kongtrackr.herokuapp.com/#/game/-K0N5GdPL7K6GCEqA6Ys/summary)
