Title: The DK Cabaret is no more!
Post by: SunDevilDog on February 13, 2015, 04:42:31 am
I sold it to make room for my newest addition, a 2005 Namco Donkey Kong Trio!

I know, sacrilege! However, the cabaret never got played and I knew someone who really wanted the cabaret, so off it went.

Now, this Namco cabinet has a 25'' CRT mounted vertically and features continues on Donkey Kong and DK Jr. (not on Mario Bros though). The question is, since they modified the code for the continues, and they modified the Mario Bros code to fit into the vertical screen, did they fix the kill screen so you can keep on playing past Level 22? I am going to have to have Robbie Lakeman come and find out!

Here is a quick video tour of this machine: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KqcxLrTAU9w (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KqcxLrTAU9w)

Cool machine! I have heard from a technician that the kill screen was patched on this cabinet, so I'm about 99.9% sure it will just keep on going.

I've played one fairly recently, and I know for Junior anyway the killscreen still happened. I didn't quite make it to the end on DK, but I reckon the game ends on L=22 as well.

Definitely unpatched.

There was a guy on YouTube showing the end of his game on one of these boasting a kill screen, and he was called out in the comments for using continues. ;D

Sweet!  Ive seen these online but never in person.  Sad to see the cabaret go, but this is a nice replacement.  If that bezel is glass make sure to never let  <Billy> play it Kappa

Watching <Billy> bezel-punch is what gave me the courage to start doing it myself.

I can confirm that the 3-in-1 is not patched. I KSed it back in the day using continues (the one I played on reset the score with each continue, but I'm not sure if there is a setting or not to keep the score with the continues... any chance you can see if such a setting exists?).

I'm surprised that this board isn't emulated in MAME, but it's modern hardware which means that it might be such that the system resources necessary to emulate it would bring PCs to their knees.

(Try running the 60-in-1 iCade ROM in MAME to see what I mean  ;D )

When I go into the test menu, it does not have any option like this. It says Software Revision G, so maybe there was a later version that did this?
