It will give you a visual and audio cue when you would have died but the board doesnt reset. Also, there's unlimited time. So you can put in multiple practice reps, rapidly.

how can I tell the length inbetween springs?

Pay attention to about 50 springs.  You'll start noticing that some have a much shorter distance in between.  Then you'll start noticing the longer ones.
