One thing that has been of great interest to me lately is the number of players currently engaged in a race to their first million. I'd like to add a little bit of incentive for the players in the race to keep grinding and not lose motivation.
I will pay $200 to the first player to score their first ever million-point game before 12:01AM eastern September 1st.
Eric Tessler has added $300 the pot.
Ethan Daniels has added $100 to the pot.
Robbie Lakeman has added $50 to the pot.
Daniel Desjardins has added $50 to the pot.
Steve Grunberger has added $50 to the pot.
Jeremy Young has added $25 to the pot.
The total pot stands at $775 now!
Rules:
- Arcade and MAME are both eligible.
- Your game must be submitted to both DKF and Twin Galaxies. If you are banned from DKF, you can submit to MARP in its place. If this is an Arcade performance, a single submission to TG will be sufficient.
- Your game must be streamed live on Twitch. NO EXCEPTIONS.
Prize Money Payouts:
1st Player to 1m (Andrew Barrow) - $350
2nd Player to 1m (John McCurdy) - $200
3rd Player to 1m - $100
4th Player to 1m - $75
5th Player to 1m - $50
Good luck to everyone involved!
-
Ill throw another hundo down for the 2nd person to get the job done love it <Tim> Tg submission not required
-
Wow! Go sirs!

Hm... http://www.twitch.tv/expandedidea (http://www.twitch.tv/expandedidea) <popcorn>
-
I will add $300 to the pot as well...good luck everyone!!!
-
1st 300
2nd 200
3rd 100
assuming the pot is at 600 now if we do this Ill throw in 50 for 4th
I would like to see this competition go long and keep the hype
-
I have some difficulties to overcome in trying to participate in this, but I will try to do so. Lit? Kreygasm
I just moved and put my DK machine into storage, but I should be receiving my wiring harness for my 60-in-1 cab (which I didn't put into storage) in the next few days here. I'll also try to see if my dinosaur of a computer can handle streaming anymore.
-
What!!!?
' i'd better get practising!! ' <Wiebe>
-
The pot is now up to $675! The thread has been updated with the prize structure.
-
I dont quite understand the prize structure but hey throw another $50 in the pot from me.
Dan

That escalated quickly. Kreygasm

Very generous contest!
I'm not in the contest, but just curious on a couple of things since I haven't been active on the boards lately. Has there been some sort of merger with TG and DKF? I was curious why you were requiring submissions to be made here and TG, and if arcade, TG only. Or are you just helping TG get submissions?
And second, I thought twitch recordings weren't accepted for TG.[/list]
-
Hi Dave,
My reasoning is that because TG submissions are automatically reflected on the HSL here, it kills two birds with one stone. Twitch submissions are routinely accepted on the new TG.
-
Add $50 from me please
-
Thanks for your contribution, Steve! The top prize has increased from $300 to $350.
-
Hi Dave,

But DKF requires imp files right?
-
Woo! I am eager to try. :)
I pretty much just decided that I'm gonna aim for 1M again, so this is very convenient motivation! I'm definitely rusty. I'm gonna get a really good night sleep and try tomorrow. I've noticed that it's pretty much impossible for me to score big on little sleep. Tiredness affects me much more than others I think.
Anyway, excited to participate!
-
You still have to submit here AFAIK even if its linked to TG for it to show up on the HSL here.
Dan
-
From the List Submission Rules (https://donkeykongforum.net/index.php?topic=365.0), Auxiliary Rule #3:
3. Scores verified by Twin Galaxies will be accepted.
-
Right but you still have to submit it to show up. You guys are just checking TG for scores and updating the list automatically?

If I understand this correctly, it is eligible to do the million without recording an imp, assuming TG verifies my score from the Twitch recording? The reason I'm asking is because my Mame control settings reset everytime I try to record an imp.

Hey Victor,
Are you using the "record.bat" batch file supplied with WolfMAME?
If so, there's your problem. The "dkong.cfg" file, which stores your control settings, is temporarily moved to "dkong.bak" before the recording begins. Once the recording is complete, the original file is restored. As a result, all controller mapping assignments are reset to their original values.
As a workaround, you can create your own batch file (without the "move" commands) or manually invoke MAME using the command line:
mame dkong -record dkong.inp
The syntax above is the simplest form, although a number of other options are available.
-
You guys should form an "experts" panel and lock in your bets who is going to get there 1st, 2nd and 3rd etc

I just "rem" out the line in record.bat where it renames the .cfg file. I don't understand the point there and it doesn't seem to break anything so i dont bother. That way my inputs are saved. :D

Don't worry, I can't even break 200k right now <gasp>

You're not alone, Andrew.
Lately, a trip to Level 05 with fewer than 2 deaths has prompted a champagne and confetti celebration.

Here are the best scores I can find for this Event so far:
Bounty Tracker (https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1WtEj6qeTPJiXBholR2XtZ27FOissI2zmDDiyX8HkE2I/edit?usp=sharing)
Feel free to post your progress (or make corrections) in this thread so that we might better know our enemies. <Billy> <Roy>
-
that "spring jumper" title should be replaced with "stats guru"
ever since that article it just rolls off the tongue :P
-
My best effort thus far:
444,400 (ending on Level 10-3)
As usual, all 4 deaths belong in the "user error" column.
-
My best effort thus far:
Whoah there, it's race to 1M, not 1.1!
Put me down for 605,000 ending on 14-5. :)
A few additional stats:
- Sessions played: 4 (1 for each of the 4 days so far)
- Session duration: 1h 47m (shortest) 2h 34m (longest) (all about the same)
- Total coins dropped: 19 (averaging 4.75 per day)
Best scores:
496,600 (12-4)
605,000 (14-5)
Biggest issues:
- Rust. Day 1 and 2 were just dumpster fires of bad timing, execution, positioning, etc. After last night and tonight though (when I got those two scores) I feel that I'm now back into the DK zone.
- Springs. My recognition is off and I'm playing them timid. I was 10K+ under pace by the time these games ended, and the springs is actually the biggest leak. I'm losing a lot of points on springs. The last death on the 496K game was a spring, and the first death on the 605K game was a spring (L4). I did clear 40 boards on my last man (8-3 to 14-4, ending on 14-5) on the 605K game though, so that bodes well.
-
Can i recorded it to my hard drive and stream it ? i have kids i cant boot them off internet everyday to steam there be a war hear and i would end up killing one them if they dont kill each other first :)
Can i just stream the recording to Twitch ? :-\

I hate donkey kong
I have a similar problem, the only blessing is....Bonfire night is approaching and my cab may be on the top!!

This is not a line in the sand, but I do not personally require TG submissions for the bounty I offered; $100 goes to the million that occurs 3rd, OR to anyone who gets a mill. lit and does not wish to submit to TG. However, the score must be submitted here at DKF, following the guidelines and what not. I actually alluded to this in my OP (or so I thought; retroactively edited)...
EDIT, EDIT: It was recently brought to my attention that the DKF HSL does not require a name, I do (totally not unrealistic), love it
-
I have a feeling that, while this is off to a slow-ish start (no millions after just about 5 days now), my sense is that the first two will come in relatively close to one another.
IMO, nobody hitting it yet is actually better. Every day that goes by where it doesn't happen just ratchets up the tension that much more. <blinky>
-
Look at what happens when you don't check the DKF!
Only just read this tonight. Is the a registration list?
-
Just saw my name on the spread sheet so guess I am a contender. Haven't had a game in a over 4 weeks. Might play in a couple of nights.
-
Andrew Barrow has won 1st prize, but don't forget the Event is still well underway! Over half of the money in the prize pool is still up for grabs, so keep playing!
-
So correct me if I'm wrong here, but since the prize pool is $775, it nobody else does this, Barra gets the whole pot?
That's awesome if so, because it keeps things exciting for him as well. He's freerolling for it now, and has to hex everybody else from here. ;D
Bring on that shoutbox, I'm putting it out there right now. The shoutbox cannot touch me. Kappa

The only way Barra could win the whole $775 pot is if everyone who has contributed agrees that's how the payout would happen. Right now, I think everyone is settled on the current prize structure format, meaning Barra gets "only" $350.
-
Prize Money Payouts:
1st Player to 1m (Andrew Barrow) - $350
2nd Player to 1m - $200
3rd Player to 1m - $100
4th Player to 1m - $75
5th Player to 1m - $50
Prize payouts have been updated.
-
Right, but this ends September 1 @ 12:01am right? If no other 1M happens by then, is it winner (i. e. Barra) take all, or does the rest of the money disappear?
It might be good to clarify that :)
Dave
-
Under the current prize structure, the maximum that Andrew can win is $350 (unless all donors agree to a different structure).
-
My $25 is committed to the 5th place score. If there is no 5th place score at the end of the Event, or if I am the 5th place score, I will split that $25 evenly among the winners.
-

Wes edited the initial post, so I will just explain what I meant for posterity in case it's a question later: originally the post mentioned that "unclaimed prize money will be split evenly between the winners."
That of course could get messy because not all of the money is necessarily earmarked that way for all the contributors, so it's probably a good thing that this was changed.

481k game tonight, 279k on the last life.
Not trying to hijack the thread but...
Unfortunately, I am dropping out of the 1M race officially. I've actually just decided to retire from competitive gaming for an indeterminate amount of time. I'm taking a break from technology really, and restructuring my life. I need some changes in my life, and I need to avoid all distractions so I can accomplish my goals. Catch you guys later.

This is the entire point of the 1m contest. For us to better ourselves. Good luck my friend. May peace be with you.

Good to see people still at it!! Contest is far from over.
Prediction for #2: Tanner
Go sirs!

Progress update:
510,700 (ending on Level 12-1)
I have yet to pass the halfway point (L12-2) since this thing started.
-
Another minor progress report from earlier today:
575,500 (ending on Level 13-4)
I abandoned the bottom hammer after my 3rd death (on Level 7-6). My strategy was to run the barrel boards until my pace dipped below 1M, then adjust my approach by taking enough bottom hammers to increase my average score by 300-400 points per barrel board.
-
This was a no re-start attempt since I started playing at about 11pm and first game in about 10 days. Was going strong but the game turned so quickly.
-
Congrats to our two winners Andrew Barrow and John McCurdy!
You will be contacted about payment details by the end of the day.
-
congrats, gentlemen! its great to have two new folks in the club. thanks for hosting the Event, copie...and to those that donated money towards the pot. much appreciated :)
-
I wanted to say thanks to Wes for the contest, and congratulations again to Barra and Mr. X.
This event was actually extremely valuable to me, psychologically. I have not enjoyed playing this game for a long time, and I realized during the first week the problem with my attitude.
The instant I stopped caring about "getting a score", and just started playing to see boards, encounter situations, jabber into the mic, etcetera, I was fine. I was not playing to get a million points. I was playing for 100K starts and 53K levels. If I could do 17 53K levels in a row, so much the better. Essentially I just had to go back to basics, to where I was in spring 2011 when I first got into this. I didn't think about about finishing the game then, I just wanted to learn and experience the game. Getting new PBs felt good, but they were simply the inevitable consequence of being pulled along by the compulsion to show up and play.
So, in more recent times, whenever I'd step up to the machine with the thought, "just give me my million points" (or 4th place in this tournament, or qualify me for a Kong Off wildcard machine, or whatever), I was setting myself up to be angry and unfulfilled. I was doing it wrong.
For too long, I have been playing solely to "get it done" (a 7-digit DK score) which, to be honest, doesn't mean much to me personally anymore, as opposed to playing simply for the physical/mental pleasure of taking one deep and letting the score take care of itself.
I know it's the standard mentality for a lot of high-score chasers, but the whole "goal" approach not only doesn't work for me personally, it's the exact opposite of how I need to come at this. I don't want to be pushing at the game, I want the game to be pulling at me. If it's not pulling, I should be doing something else. All of that effort/striving/struggle/motivation/accomplishment-based rhetoric seems to be necessary for some, but for me, it's completely the wrong way to think. This is all much more fun when approached as an indulgence. Why turn it into work?
I also just needed to remind myself to accept the game for how ridiculous and unfair it is so much of the time. Which, again, seems to be the opposite approach to the hardline "every death is the player's fault" narrative. I think that emerged as a reactive counter-ideology, to players who refuse to take responsibility for their mistakes. But to me, both mentalities are flawed, extremes that are each harmful in their own ways. The fact of the matter is, the game screws you, a lot. And when it doesn't screw you, it could have if it had wanted to. Every game that reaches L=22 is full of death-bringing situations that could have unfurled if the randomness had gone in another direction. And when the game isn't screwing you, your dumb, silly, crappy, garbage brain is going to do something stupid that you know better than to do.
Some of my viewers noted that (with a few exceptions) I was consistently less ragey these last couple of weeks. That came down to the attitude adjustment.
The reason I game is for the side-effects: stuff like the overall increase in mental sharpness, the high I get when locked into a deep run, and the lessons that I can take into other areas of life. This contest was rich in side-effects. So, thanks!
I posted some stats in my forum blog:

Thanks for participating, Chris! I hope you reach 1m soon. Those who played during the event but did not reach 1m are still better players for it!
I'm considering having another one of these next year... it seems that we've had a lot of up-and-comers enter the scene lately.
-
Congrats to everyone that participated! I wish I could have played more but I was doing a lot of traveling....looking forward to the next one! ;)
-
This was a great little tourney!
Nice one Wes, would be great to have another one.
The highlight of course being Andrew Barrows Elevator suicide on roughly 700k!! <stirpot> ROFL
-
This tourney was the one thing that made me regret having already reached 1M. Perhaps being the most recent player to reach the mark made me that much more aware of it. Ah well :) Sure was fun to watch, though... especially AB's million.
-
About time I thanked everyone......You guys rock!! Congrats to John as well :)
I did a quick write up in my Blog (https://donkeykongforum.net/index.php?topic=842.msg24423#msg24423)

hi all
