Best sequels/ originals
« on: April 29, 2014, 01:31:31 pm »
With Pwnasaurus coming out on the side of Galaxian being better than Galaga I started thinking about other games and how the sequels compare to the originals.  Which games do people like better?  I like a lot of sequels better, but maybe some people prefer more of the originals.

Galaga better than Galaxian - but mostly because I haven't played much Galaxian and Galaga was my favorite until a few years ago
Millipede better than Centipede
Asteroids Deluxe better than Asteroids  (also like Space Duel quite bit)
Frenzy better than Berzerk
Stargate better than Defender
Ms Pac better than Pac Man
Zaxxon more playable than Super Zaxxon so may be better...
DK better than DK Jr (but I still like DK3)

for the record - I hate both Joust 2 and Elevator Action 2, both shit games.

Millipede defaults - 1,902,984
Millipede TGTS - 360,827

Although it's only slightly different, New Rally-X was better than Rally-X. I like knowing where that S flag is ahead of time.

Tbh, I think a true Joust master would be able to play Joust 2 at a high level. For that reason, it is one of my goals to get good at that game.

I think the same thing can be said of FHMC Q*bert. That's another game I wanna get better at.

Don't forget Time Pilot and Time Pilot '84. I know I'm in the minority opinion here, and I like Time Pilot a lot, but I like tp84 more.  <thefinger>

I stay with the originals.

Just a few examples.

Bombjack Twin, Time Pilot 84, Dig Dug 2 and DK Jr.

Still good games no question but for me not in the same league as the originals. For me the charm of the originals is gone on the above mentioned titles.

Nothing comes close to the originals imo  <pacman>

DK Jr vs DK lol not even debatable same goes for Dig Dug 1 and 2.

Oh I dunno, it's usually a nice short game that can get pretty intense and has a nice variety of enemies with different behaviors. The hidden targets, ground-tank formations, and the lock-on miss-aisle mechanic are interesting added elements that don't seem to overcomplicate things. I normally believe that less is more, but this is the rare exception. I like the sounds/colors too. But hey, I like some of the shittiest cags known to man so take my opinions with a grain of salt.  ;D Admittedly though, nostalgia may be clouding my judgement in this case, so I'll  :-X

Here at Steve's List Forum, knowledge is the reward.  That and crescent rolls.

The "crescent rolls" reference reminds me of an exchange at work, more than 20 years ago.

A guy from financial planning stopped by our department to chat.  After answering some random question, another co-worker said, "Don Pardo, tell him what he's won."  Without any hesitation, I launched into this spiel:

"Right you are, Jim.  You've won a year's supply of Hostess toaster pastries, the delicious treat that's good for lunchtime, snack time, any time . . . Hostess!"

One of my better extemporaneous comedic moments.

I'll agree with Steve on his selections so far.

Asteroids Deluxe is far superior to Asteroids, if they would have been released in the reverse order the game would have never taken off, as it is much harder.

Super Missile Attack vs Missile Attack.  I do prefer the original but I still like the added stuff they did in the later.

Pole Position vs Pole 2.  Never really liked either as the game was too short when I was younger, I wanted to be able to play for as longs as I wanted back then.  But now that they are free I prefer Pole 2, although I mainly just play test track.

Joust VS Joust2.  There is no comparison as the sequel sucks royal.  It does have more level play and variation but it comes down to memorization of levels or you will die.  If you didn't have to be at a certain place when the level started this game
would have been so much better.

Scramble vs Super Cobra.  I love both games.  Still haven't learned all there is to the later.  It has 10 levels compared to 5 but many kinda repeat with a slight variation.  But it's the better of the two when it comes down to variety.
