According to Dona Bailey who programmed and developed the idea of using the pastel colors within the game, she thought it might appeal more to female gamers if that was added in.  Turns out she was right I think.

Edit: OK, maybe my first response was too controversial.  2nd response:  Maybe because the centipedes look like lots of ice cream cones. :)
