Shigeru Miyamoto, on the design philosophy behind Donkey Kong:

"I would analyze games while I played them, trying to figure out what it was about the way the games were put together that made them enjoyable and made people want to play them again. I concluded that this was born of the players being mad at themselves. So I would try to analyze how the game made players feel that way. Now, a fun game should always be easy to understand — you should be able to take one look at it and know what you have to do straight away. It should be so well constructed that you can tell at a glance what your goal is and, even if you don't succeed, you'll blame yourself rather than the game."

 

I think he was actually pretty successful, but somebody needs to explain "screwings" to him...

The interesting concept here is scrolling...imagine not being able to see the whole screen.

I would not have believed the 2600 hardware was even capable of producing graphics like that.

I guess memory was the real limitation after all!

The DK that came out was bad, but you can only do so much with 4KB. This guy used 32!

I just saw a futurama episode where Fry swapped hands with a devil robot to play some Holophonor.

The people dancing had a skit where they jumped over DK barrels for 100 points
