Quick Donkey Kong hackery
« on: March 16, 2019, 06:55:09 pm »
Lyriell had asked if I could make a modified version of DK that only played spring stages and started at level 5...
So I figured, yes, and that we could just post it here so that if anyone else is also interested in it - here it is.

This hack is just that - it plays level 5 and up spring stages only.
In order to run it, well, MAME doesn't like romhacks unless you run MAME from the command prompt.  Works fine from the command prompt.  Just copy your original dkong.zip and/or put it somewhere safe for the time being and copy *this* dkong.zip to MAME's rom directory to use it.  Restore your original dkong.zip to get back to normal DK.

I've left the name of the thread general because who knows, maybe if I make more quickie DK hacks like this I can just post em in here.

Thanks all

Major props to Sock Master on this.

He turned it around in no time and is an all round top dude!

I know there are people out there that want to be able to practice these stages without save states... so now you have it... "The Spring Gauntlet"

Maybe one day we'll be doing the 5 minute spring challenge lol!

It's been some time since I posted the springs-only version of DK..  Lyriell was wondering if I could cobble up a slightly different variant that had type 14 and 15 springs appear more frequently so here it is.

It should be the same as the old version except it's more evil and makes the type 14 and 15 springs appear ...well, it should be twice as often but I dunno, it seems like they appear quite often!

Same as before, just put this in your MAME roms directory (and make sure to keep your original dkong.zip for safekeeping to restore things back to normal) and run MAME from the command prompt to get around it complaining about corrupt roms.

Enjoy!

Did you intentionally chop off the last 256 bytes from c_5at_g.bin ?

Whoops, that extra space was left for something unrelated.  You can just fill it with zeros if you want to make the file size even.

Thanks for the info. If it makes no difference I'll leave it as is.
