Newb questions about wolfmame
« on: November 17, 2017, 11:57:39 am »
Hey guys, I've been practicing on a mac version of mame for a while but I finally installed bootcamp and I'm ready to go legit wolfmame. I installed the latest version from https://github.com/mahlemiut/wolfmame/releases however I saw some posts mentioning Twin Galaxies requires an older version... problem is a lot of the FAQs and posts that mention using that older version are years old themselves, so I'm a little confused. Could anyone clear up which version I should be using now, or point me in the direction of an up to date wolfmame guide if I missed that? Thanks!

The requirement these days is WolfMAME 0.106 or later. If you have the latest version, you're good to go. I personally use WolfMAME 0.189.
PBs:
Donkey Kong - 1,032,100 (22-1)
Donkey Kong Junior - 79,400 (4-2)
Donkey Kong 3 - 344,200 (Stage 22)
Crazy Kong Part II - 645,400 (22-4)

Thanks Flo. Is there a reason you prefer 0.189 over 0.191?

Also some of the guides I saw for recording INP files seem to show the older UI. I know I should search for this some more before I ask but do you have any good links that explain recording for the newer versions? No problem if not, I'll go do some more research now. Cheers.

0.189 was the latest version when I downloaded it, and I just haven't bothered to upgrade, that's all. As for recording, I'd recommend going to http://replay.marpirc.net/, then clicking the Help tab on the top of the page, then clicking Windows commandline. This should provide you with the information needed to record and play back INP files.

Thanks very much.

It's interesting they moved away from the GUI way of recording I saw in old versions to this command line stuff. I'm sure there are some reasons for it though.

If anyone else finds this post in the future and has similar questions here's a helpful video that shows command line recording in action: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xboA4zn4SBg

Ok, one more beginner question. I noticed when I start a game via the command prompt record it resets my ingame key binds (I prefer WASD keys to move because the arrows on my laptop are tiny and impossible to use). Is there a way to keep these keys and still record?

I think you may have to alter the control scheme while not recording or playing back. I know a number of features are automatically disabled when recording.

Using the record.bat file just edit it via notepad. put a REM statement in from on the line that renames the .cfg file and the line that renames it back.

That will keep your keyboard / joystick layout per game/global.
