Title: DK in the news/on the net.
Post by: marinomitch13 on January 31, 2013, 06:04:38 pm
Hey, I thought that it would be a good thing to have a dedicated thread to posting articles or pictures that we find of DK randomly online.

Here is one I found today through www.digg.com (http://www.digg.com) that is titled "Old School Video Game Characters in real life":

http://www.visualnews.com/2013/01/30/old-school-video-game-characters-vs-real-life/?utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=feed&utm_campaign=Feed%3A+TheVisualNews+%28Visual+News%29 (http://www.visualnews.com/2013/01/30/old-school-video-game-characters-vs-real-life/?utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=feed&utm_campaign=Feed%3A+TheVisualNews+%28Visual+News%29)

Donkey Kong is featured in one of the pictures, which I've attached.

Icelander got the Kill Screen in Donkey Kong

"Very few people in the world have managed to get to this level" says Icelander Mr. Svavar Gunnar Gunnarsson, a masters student at the Niels Bohr institution and an enthusiast about classical computer games. Last Tuesday Mr. Gunnarsson managed to get the so called Kill Screen in the game Donkey Kong, he received 824.300 points and the machine crashed.

The term Kill Screen is well known among gamers. This happens when the memory of the machine is full  and then the game crashes, sometimes this is called Winning the game at least in Donkey Kong. Steve Wiebe, a competitor from Redmond, Washington, attained this screen when he attempted to beat Billy Mitchell's Donkey Kong high score (which was the world record) on G4TV at E3 2009. It was the first kill screen to be broadcast on live television.

Mr. Gunnarsson started playing the game after he saw the documentary King of Kong. The documentary is about addicted gamers. "I thought that this was the best game that I have played. The game is addicting and you cannot stop playing"

"But then I stopped playing and didn't play for two years. When I moved to Copenhagen I found out that there was an arcade close to where I lived. In there I found Donkey Kong. I thought: Jesus Christ, I have to try to beat by record! I joked about getting the Kill Screen but then it just happened" he said and laughed.

The world champion in Donkey Kong, dr. Hank Chien, who has managed to get 1.100.000 points in the game, congratulated Mr. Gunnarsson on his Facebook page.

"It meant a lot to me to see my name on the list of people who have achieved this" Mr. Gunnarsson added.

Getting Into Gaming: Donkey Kong

By Natalie Ellis on 7 Mar, 2013 at 11:00 AM

"Video games as we know them today came into their own in the 1970s with the creation of arcades. Anyone who knows anything about gaming can tell you that. What’s less commonly known is that the first video game was patented way back in 1947, with the creation of the cathode ray tube amusement device. Not the catchiest trade name, but this simple little gizmo, with only a dial and big red button on its controller, is the reason we have games today. The first games were beyond basic. Turn the dial to move the dot until it’s over the airborne target on screen, then hit the red button to blow it to hell! However, from this basic concept came the precursors to Pong, Space Invaders, Asteroids!, and every FPS ever created!

Realistically, I don’t intend to dig up gaming consoles from the 1940s. Not only would it be damn near impossible, but it would be dull and boring and desperately, desperately dull! Also, they would make for the shortest column ever written: “I pushed the button, and it blew up. The end.” So I decided to start with one of the most famous old school games out there: Donkey Kong, the first jumping platformer ever made.

I’ve never been the biggest fan of platformers in general, but something about the retro graphics (the sound was on mute) and the utterly bizarre concept of a barrel-throwing gorilla, with an inexplicable hatred for you, gives Donkey Kong a charm of forgiveableness. The more research I did, the more entertaining the game became. Originally, the hero’s name was simply “Jump Man” and his girlfriend was imaginatively named “Lady”. As if that wasn’t amusing enough, the name Donkey Kong, is rumoured to have come from a bad Japanese translation of ‘stupid ape’, which can now be roughly translated back to mean ‘ass monkey’. Even if that isn’t true, it’s still a damn good insult for the bastard who’s throwing barrels at you!

I can’t deny I was glad there were only 4 levels. By the fourth I was running out of expletives and my laptop was bearing the brunt of my rage. I’m almost embarrassed to admit that it took me nearly an hour to reach level 4, after a multitude of failed attempts, but that damn fireball was being an utter troll! However, I think the flag-ship status of Donkey Kong is what makes it fun to play nowadays. If you played it as a child, it gives you a strong sense of nostalgia. For those playing it for the first time, you get the feeling you’re looking in on an important step in the history of gaming… like the moon landing, only more pixelated and with more gorillas. As I played through, my boyfriend watched me over my shoulder, witnessing my noobish deaths at the foot of ladders and my poorly-timed jumps, which ultimately resulted in death too. But I didn’t mind his jokes and him laughing at my rants because they made me realise that Donkey Kong is most fun in retrospect. It’s at that moment when a reference suddenly makes sense, or when you can legitimately laugh at a joke because you understand it, not because you read about it on the internet, that the significance of Donkey Kong becomes so obvious, even to a first-time player.

Today I had a co-worker, with no interest or knowledge of my DK play, show me a slashdot story about the role reversal DK (play as pauline) on his smartphone.

I had a similar experience yesterday.  A former co-worker sent me a link to one of the many online articles, with a "Breaking News" subject line.  I replied with a link to this forum's "A Role-Reversal Hack!" thread, suggesting that his news was "so 2 days ago".  I also included a link to Allen's "Rage Compilation #4", assuring him that it was perfectly safe for work.   ;D

Just kidding with that last part.  I did send the video link, but I also attached an appropriate warning.

I seen this the other day where this guys daughter wanted to play as Pauline so he programmed it to reverse roles and Mario was yelling for help instead. Also was reading about a donkey kong Easter egg on atari where Don hodges I believe searched through the code to find out how this Easter egg could be found.

Gamers Go Ape Over Donkey Kong Tournament at Spacebar Arcade

"Boise Weekly previously took you below ground to Spacebar Arcade, where a group of classic arcade gamers battled it out in a Galaga tournament Feb. 21. After the success of that tourney, more than a dozen players turned out March 28 to try their hand at a similar competition—this time featuring the Nintendo classic Donkey Kong.

For those unfamiliar with Donkey Kong, the premise is simple on paper. A giant ape has kidnapped a pretty blonde lady and a Mario-esque "jumpman," as he's called, must save her. To do so, players jockey a knob and a button to jump over barrels.

For the competition, each player had a single quarter to drop into the machine and five minutes to achieve a high score. Unfortunately for me, I'm better at downing suds than I am at dodging barrels.

On my first run, I scored a paltry 2,200 points without getting past the first level, whereas BW's Josh Gross scored 7,800. Meanwhile the frontrunner, Mike Ramshaw, scored 32,000 on his first shot.

Alas, a second run did me no better. I scored 1,500—less than 10 percent of some of the other competitor's scores. Ramshaw walked away with first place at 32,000 points, Joel Wallace achieved second place with 29,500 and Cam Gunn took third place at 29,100.

Each took home swag—including hats and pint glasses—from tournament sponsor Ninkasi Brewing Company from Eugene, Ore. A Pac-Man competition is planned for April."

My first thought was, "out of a dozen players the best anybody did was 32,000??"

Then I re-read it and noticed the 5-minute time limit.

I have no idea what my 5-minute score would be, but 32K is probably not too bad.

EDIT: I gave it a shot. 38,700. Woo hoo!

Original Red Donkey Kong to be featured in new retro arcade in Arkansas soon...

http://www.arkansasonline.com/news/2013/mar/28/arcade-set-open-feature-retro-games/?f=threerivers (http://www.arkansasonline.com/news/2013/mar/28/arcade-set-open-feature-retro-games/?f=threerivers)

SHERWOOD — Gamers, get ready. A new outlet for hours of Donkey Kong, Ms. Pac Man, Tron, Gauntlet and more is coming soon to the Three Rivers area.

Terry South of Jacksonville and Daniel Solis of Sherwood, by way of Heber Springs, are the men behind Arcade Wizards, a local coin-operated game repair outfit. After they teamed up for work two years ago, the friends decided that it wasn’t enough to just repair games; they wanted to help connect fans with the retro games they loved.

South and Solis formed the Classic Gaming Association, bringing in crowds of up to 60 at 7 p.m. the last Tuesday of each month for a night of free gaming and tech talks.

“We try to be home by midnight, but sometimes that doesn’t happen,” Solis said.

There’s no charge for people to attend, and all the games are set on “free play.”

The events take place at the Arcade Wizards offices in Sherwood, a nondescript warehouse space filled to the brim with retro games.

When they first walk in, visitors are greeted by the duo’s most-prized games: Atari Star Wars, Gauntlet and a red-cabinet Donkey Kong, one of only 2,200 made.

“The red Donkey Kong is fully restored and powder-coated with new Formica and new decals,” Solis said.

The restorations took South and Solis two months and just under $1,000 to complete.

The warehouse’s storage section holds more than 130 games in various stages of repair. The games are so densely packed that it’s impossible to reach some, let alone play them.

But Solis and South have a plan to make the games more accessible. This summer, the pair plan to open Z82 Retrocade in Sherwood, on Kiehl Avenue near Kapow Comics.

The space will include 45 to 50 games, which Solis and South will rotate in and out. For now, the plan is for the Retrocade to be open six days a week, beginning at 4 or 5 p.m. on weeknights. Visitors will be charged a set price when they arrive, and all games will be set on free play.

“It’s a unique way of doing it,” South said. “But if someone is getting $5 in change and playing, you’re not always getting that money back. We don’t think we’ll get rich, but it has to pay for itself.”

Solis said the Retrocade will have to be closed at least one day a week for repairs and upkeep. One of the benefits to having two coin-operated game repairmen running the business is that repairs will be quick — a bonus when most of the equipment is hovering around 30 years old.

“The coin-operated business has been going downhill since the ’80s due to a sheer lack of technicians to fix them,” South said.

Some of the games are so old, Solis said, that it can take two weeks to fix a game that will only work for two more weeks before breaking again.

The process of integrating new technology while maintaining the authenticity of the games is no small job. Solis and South have put in countless hours on their game collection, going as far as

Illinois, California and Georgia to purchase games, and staying in their shop until midnight or 1 a.m.

“We have no intention of getting rich,” Solis said. “But it’ll be nice to have a place to be in our golden years.”

Both Solis and South have worked as technicians in the amusement industry for decades and are avid gamers themselves. Solis counts Tron as his favorite, while South prefers Gorf.

“Even though we’re both very good, neither of us logs scores,” Solis said. “We keep ourselves out of it, but we’re always around for advice.”

Members of the Classic Gaming Association come from Fort Smith, Fayetteville, Bryant, Conway, Searcy, Hot Springs and more locations to attend the monthly meetings. The group is a mix of ages, and at one point, more than half of its members were women. In addition to game play, meetings also include technical demonstrations on a variety of topics, including air conditioning and computer maintenance.

Many members come to play just one game, such as Donkey Kong or Ms. Pac Man, and Solis and South are confident that the players’ enthusiasm will carry over to the Retrocade.

“People we don’t even know are asking about [the Retrocade],” Solis said. “We want a place where everybody can play every day.”

Rick Worrell of Austin has been a member of CGA since the beginning and looks forward to the Retrocade opening this summer as a place where retro game enthusiasts can meet.

“The social aspect isn’t there with games today, where you only talk to people in a microphone,” Worrell said. “With the Retrocade, you get to go to a place and talk to people and get that social interaction that’s so lacking in today’s world with all the Internet communication.”

Although a retro arcade recently opened in Fayetteville, Solis and South believe Z82 will be the first arcade of its kind in central Arkansas.

More than anything, Solis hopes the Retrocade will give gamers an opportunity to socialize with each other.

“There’s a kinship that exists when you’re playing the game with someone rather than over the computer,” he said. “If you lose, you’re frustrated, but you also want to congratulate them. I don’t think that exists in any other competition.”

He concedes that the background scenery was masked out and replaced with a single consistent frame, but otherwise each frame was hand-constructed on a wall, shot, and then transferred into the scene you see here.

It's funny that you mention that.  Instead of marveling at the dedication required to complete such an ambitious project, I was watching the barrel board animation, waiting to see how many points would be awarded for a blue smash.   ::)

I should seriously consider making a down payment on something that vaguely resembles a life.  Can anyone here break a twenty?

Bucks closes to make way for retro arcade bar

"Bucks Saloon, a Boystown institution, is closing its doors, but a new bar will takes its place.
Mark Liberson, owner of Hydrate Nightclub, Halsted's and Elixir, has announced that he will open Replay, a retro arcade, at 3439 N. Halsted St.

On Facebook, Bucks regulars lamented the loss of their favorite bar, which outlived many of the neighborhood's earliest businesses. Bucks had announced the impending closure in February but had not announced a closing date. Bucks customers celebrated the bar at an April 14 farewell party.

Liberson said he hopes to honor the Bucks tradition as a local watering hole.

"The history of Bucks is a long one, and what we're going to do is build upon its destination as a place to spend time with friends," Liberson said.

Replay will feature m ore than 25 craft beers, bourbon and more than 20 video games from the '80s and '90s, including Ms. Pac-Man to Galaga, Space Invaders to Donkey Kong, according to a media statement.

"The most exciting new thing really is what's old," said Liberson, referring to the arcade games.

The bar will offer a cocktail menu by Elixir's Danny Quinn and food options from Halsted's.

The space will be refinished from floor to ceiling, said Liberson. It is expected to open by Memorial Day weekend."

Just happened to catch a few minutes of "The Jeff Probst Show" this afternoon, and during a significant portion of one segment they were talking about the original name for Donkey Kong (apparently this was going to be a Popeye game but they couldn't get Popeye licensing at that time so they changed around the characters and came up with DK?).  Anyway, it was wierd to just be sort of channel surfing and stumble upon this much DK discussion on a mainstream TV show.  Hopefully someone can find a clip of it and post it here...

Gwinnett man going for world "Donkey Kong” title
Apr 29, 2013, 9:01am EDT

"Mick Winzeler reached a score of 874,000 on an old-school “Donkey Kong” arcade machine in his Buford home - a level reached by less than 50 people by most official accounts – and hopes to top that during the upcoming annual meeting in Colorado of the best arcade game competitors in the world, reports the Gwinnett Daily Post.

Winzeler, 32, who is a math teacher at Grayson High School and a former body building champion, said he reached the 874,000 score, also called Level 22, on a Saturday morning in January during a two-hour game with no breaks.

Level 22 is known among gamers as the kill screen level, the paper adds.

The Official Unofficial List of DK Killscreeners on www.classicarcadegaming.com (http://www.classicarcadegaming.com), ranks Winzeler 36th out of 50 with his score. That's a worldwide ranking, the Gwinnett Daily Post says.

Players who claim records must record the gameplay on camera, the paper reports."

Whoops, looks like there's a lot I missed to the story..

(continued)

BUFORD -- Beneath a layer of clear plastic, a man in red overalls dashes up a seven-story construction site. From a lofty perch, a sneering ape hurls barrel after barrel at the dogged protagonist as he makes his way up a series of ladders.

Sound familiar? It's the first level of iconic arcade game "Donkey Kong."

The game's good guy, "Jumpman" -- who later came to be known as Mario -- is on a mission to save his girlfriend, who has been kidnapped by the pixelated primate.

For video game aficionados, it's a prototypical damsel-in-distress story that lends charm to Nintendo's 1981 release. The narrative takes a backseat, however, to what amounts to a mad dash for points. By smashing barrels and grabbing bonus items, players can rack up points until Level 22: the game's unofficial ending.

Few in the world have reached the level. Less than 50 people by most official counts. Among them: a Grayson High School math teacher.

Earlier this year, 32-year-old Mick Winzeler recorded a score of 874,000 on the old-school "Donkey Kong" arcade machine in his Buford home. It's a number he's hoping to top as he prepares for the upcoming "Kong Off" in Denver, Colo.: an annual meeting of the world's best arcade game competitors.

"I've always had video games in my blood," Winzeler said. "I've always enjoyed them from an early age."

While he happens to be a longtime video game lover, it wasn't mere practice that propelled him to a spot among the world's best "Donkey Kong" players. His mania extends beyond the button-punching thrills experienced by the average arcade gaming addict.

His zeal touches on something more primal, setting him apart from the typical 30-something retro junkie reliving childhood, pumping countless quarters into the metal bowels of "Centipede," "Frogger," "Pac-Man" or "Q-Bert" machines.

"Whatever I do, I try to be the best I can," he said. "I can't help it. That's how it is with everything."

Including bodybuilding.

As the 2009 lightweight and overall winner of the NaturalMania Naturals, Winzeler took the top prize in what he called "the Super Bowl" of the International Natural Bodybuilding Federation.

Among the video game and cartoon posters, pictures and books in Winzeler's bedroom are half a dozen more bodybuilding trophies he's won.

In his late 20s, bodybuilding was somewhat of an obsession.

"It was all I did," he said. "I kept logs and charts of everything I ate. I had spreadsheets for every meal, every day for five or six years. I took the whole thing to a very extreme level."

His mom remembers it that way, too.

"Anytime he's ever had a desire to do something -- bodybuilding or video games or skateboarding -- he does it 100 percent," said Donna Winzeler of Loganville. "He just does it all the way."

Winzeler said he always tries to harness that level of enthusiasm for his classes at Grayson High School.

Calvin Mapp, a 17-year-old senior in Winzeler's trigonometry class, said the educator "cares about what he does and has an obvious passion for it."

Added Mapp: "There's not a lot of teachers out there who play 'Donkey Kong' and lift weights."

Winzeler has been working at Grayson High for seven years. Along with trigonometry, he teaches precalculus and geometry.

The profession, he said, "gives you the opportunity to make a difference in a kid's life. It's a chance to impact the future. When you have a former student who contacts you after graduating from college and says, 'I enjoyed your class,' that means a lot. Plus, it's just fun working with kids."

Current student Goran Susnjar, 17, thinks Winzeler is "pretty cool ... weird sometimes ... and definitely a nerd."

Susnjar said he's heard that his teacher is "one of the best" at "Donkey Kong." That doesn't surprise him. "He seems like he'd be good at it."

Winzeler said achieving top scores at "Donkey Kong" takes "a math-minded type of person."

He offered to demonstrate, plugging in the arcade cabinet in an empty room of his Buford home. Above the polycarbonate plastic cover, a soft light flickered to life, illuminating the game's title: a backlit marquee above the screen.

Doomsday eight-bit bass chords thumped from the speaker as the ape ascended rails of the digital construction site.

"I've got a 'jump' button and I can go up, down, left, right, and that's it. Real simple," he said. "Beyond that, it's all about pattern recognition. Being a math teacher makes it easier to be able to see and recognize these patterns ... and make super quick decisions. You can probably be good at 'Donkey Kong' and not be good at math, but it helps as far as the pacing."

Winzeler slapped at the joystick and fast-tapped the sherbert-orange "jump" button.

"It's a mental challenge more than anything," he said, breezing through levels. "It's hard to play if you're tired, because your decision-making isn't the best."

He posted the 874,000 score on an early Saturday morning in January: a two-hour game with no breaks.

"It was pretty stressful. After each level, I'd pace around the room while it loaded up, getting my head right."The game is tough, he said. Brutal.

"A lot of people think this game is easy, because of the way it looks. And there is a simplicity to it, but it's also something that in 30-something years people still have not completely mastered."

The average person who steps up to the arcade cabinet won't last longer than a minute and won't beat the first level, he said.
Much less, Level 22.

Known among gamers as the kill screen level, most gaming websites count 50 or fewer people who have made it so far.

According to "the Official Unofficial List of DK Killscreeners" on www.classicarcadegaming.com (http://www.classicarcadegaming.com), Winzeler ranks 36th out of 50 with his score. That's a worldwide ranking.

To keep players straight, those who make a score claim must record the gameplay on camera. The recorded claim is then submitted.

Putting his best efforts up against the world's best "Donkey Kong" players has so far been a thrill.

The idea was born when he suffered an injury last year and couldn't train for bodybuilding. After watching an independent documentary called "King of Kong: A Fistful of Quarters" about neck-and-neck arcade competitors Billy Mitchell and Steve Wiebe, Winzeler figured he'd give it a shot.

"I was dealing with a shoulder injury and an abdomen injury. I thought to myself, 'Maybe I can play some 'Donkey Kong.'' It was a nice, competitive outlet."

Competing on a video game, he said, "is a little more objective, because I have a specific number I have to beat. That's my number. With bodybuilding, it's a little more subjective."
He said there's common ground in the two very different hobbies.

"Bodybuilding and 'Donkey Kong' are both sports where you're competing against others, but the main competition is against yourself."

In Winzeler's life, he's found that such a competitive drive can be a blessing and a curse.

"It's good in that it keeps you going, but it can be a bad thing, too," he said. "If you're always comparing yourself to other people, there's always going to be somebody better than you."

Added Winzeler: "I try to tone it down, but it's in my nature. I can't deny it."

Much like the blocky, pixelated protagonist in red overalls, climbing ladders, dodging barrels and flames, Winzeler is an unshakable force on his way to the top.

It's a battle both he and Jumpman have waged for more than three decades.

Ha ha, I know. It's also funny that the article doen't include a link to the thread, it directs you to the CAG front page...good luck finding the list!  ;D

MDA should get some new viewers to his front page now to see some exclusive photos of the 2005 CAGDC tourney and to learn that the DK WR is held by Billy.

Can count on one hand how many times I even went to the CAGDC main page. Always the forums. Mark probably realizes that so doesn't bother.

It's just like twin galaxies. Before TG switched, my internet bookmark for TG was straight to the forums, the amount of time I actually went to TG's main page was very rare, and when they removed CAG from the "latest score" list, the amount of time I went there was even less. But, visited the forums on a daily basis.

TG needs a forum again to help survive, because traffic is not going to flow by just going to the main page/site.

But he takes soooooo many photos during his events (and events like Funspot)...where do they all end up?  Also he often emphasizes submitting scores to CAGDC and has on many occasions stated that his WR score list on the homepage is the true arcade WR listing, yet John Petric submitted his Zoo Keeper score to CAGDC many moons ago, had MDA be the exclusive reviewer at that time and it is still not up on his site either.

That's pretty cool about the hidden message in the DK code. I wonder if JEFF(ROMHACK) or Jeff Willm, or any of the guys who can read the code can find that message.

On another note, what program is used you reading the assembly language ROM code? I would like to be able to browse through it and refresh my memory programming. Just never what program these guys were using to look at MAME ROM Codes.

Title: Re: DK in the news/on the net.
Post by: ChrisP on May 23, 2013, 12:36:07 pm
It's actually impossible to miss!

The whole Donkey Kong program is just hexadecimal codes, each of which translate to Z80 commands, except for those lines. When you look at the program as ASCII text, the message is there.

If anybody wants to see it, you can go into dkong.zip and look. It's in the c_5at_g.bin file. Extract (copy/paste) that file from the zip, change the extension to .txt and open it in your browser or whatever. (Or leave it as .bin and try hexecute (http://www.romhacking.net/utilities/206/) if you want it to look tidier).

Scroll to the bottom and you will see it. The first few words are cut off in the US version, though (I guess they needed the space for the changes they made to the program).

If you want to see the whole thing, it's in c_5k_b.bin of the Japan ROMset.

At one point I translated the HEX to assembly code using some program, but I don't remember what it was...

I think it was dZ80.

The Queen of Kong: Kayla Rose aims to master an arcade classic

While modern-day video gaming now has a strong presence from women gamers on both the casual and competitive side, the classic arcade scene is still seemingly dominated by men. Documentary films and a sometimes constant barrage of stories about new world records on arcade relics have done little to change that perception. In this crowd of multi-day Q*bert marathons and perfect Pac-Man games stands San Francisco's Kayla Rose, a long time gamer aiming to reach the top of a revived arcade classic.

"I want to be the first female player to hit a Donkey Kong kill screen. I WILL hit a kill screen," she said.

Rose, a world traveler who studied California history and Biology at San Francisco State University and the University of California at Berkeley, started her journey up the video game ladder with an early home computer.

"The term gaming did not yet exist when I started playing video games," Kayla noted. "The earliest memories were playing Frogger, Dune and a few others on an Apple 2GS computer, also known as the 'dinosaur fossil'. This was before the mouse, so everything was done by key command. Green screen, huge monitor, floppy disk drive, frequent syntax errors, no internet connection and a really loud dot matrix color printer that used feed paper."

Kayla's video gaming would get a colorful upgrade a few years later when a full video game console came into her home.

"When the Sega Master System was introduced, we got one for Christmas," she recalled. "I remember spending hours playing with my older brother. The best games were Wonder Boy 3 and R-Type. To this day, I'm still a die-hard fan of the SMS. In its day, I still think it was better than Nintendo, because Nintendo always seemed to freeze or crash."

In August 2011, Kayla would be introduced to the very game that saved Nintendo of America as her boyfriend purchased an original Donkey Kong cabinet for his apartment.

"We started living together a few months later, so I had plenty of time to try it out," she said. "I watched him play for weeks. He seemed really into it and it looked like fun. Finally, I was brave enough to try it."

While Rose states that her earliest games created humorous moments, her scores soon began to increase. In November, Kayla and her boyfriend took a trip to the Kong Off II event in Denver, Colorado, where her ladder climbing skills began to gain public attention as she started playing one of the Kong machines at the event.

"I found myself in the groove, oblivious to anything going on around me," she said. "Level after level, board after board, people were starting to notice. It wasn't long before I had a crowd of people around me, watching me play in amazement, fascinated by what they were seeing. I breezed through every elevator board without any deaths, which got everyone's attention. When my game ended I found myself surrounded by a group of people cheering me on."

Recently, Kayla hit a personal best of 345,000 points and says she feels good about pushing her numbers closer and closer to the kill screen level.

"I didn't lose any lives on the elevator boards, so I feel good about where this is going," she said.

In addition to having fun and making friends with her Donkey Kong quest, Rose says the game has helped her in other ways.

"I spent so many years dedicating myself to electronic music. Eventually, I grew apart from music and started to focus on long term goals," Kayla said. "Priorities shifted toward health, finance, education, stability and personal establishment. At some point, I guess things became more serious than expected, but I didn't have a way to relieve day-to-day stress. My attempts to find another creative outlet failed, because I didn't know how to inspire the same passion I had with music. Years went by and I started thinking my inspiration was lost completely, then I knew I was lost. Something special happened when I started playing. It didn't happen overnight, but definitely clicked. Somehow, it sparked my interest and managed to ignite a flame. Maybe it's the fireballs."

As her kill screen pursuit continues, Kayla states that she is looking forward to getting to play in front of a crowd again later this year and hopes to see more women taking up play on the all-time classic.

"I look forward to playing at the next Kong Off," she added. "I really want to see more ladies playing. Let's throw up some scores. Queens of Kong, come out and play."

I saw those right when they started and meant to post them here, but got sidetracked. I've also been meaning to go over there and comment on them. I want to give some intermediate to advanced stuff in the comments section. Also Jeremy is giving an overview of the boards, but I wanted to point out that there is more to the game than just 4 boards, and recommend to him to at least play it until the difficulty maxes out, I think he'd come to a finer appreciation of the game.

I like Jeremy Parrish's style, been a fan of his since I got back into gaming. I discovered king of kong, mame, angry video game nerd and Jeremy's retronauts podcast all around the same time during the winter of 2010. Then I found barcade and that was all she wrote. When I was manager of a dog day care, I used to listen to video game podcasts to pass the time. Retronauts archives can probably still be found at the now defunct 1up.com, although I know they are going to start up the podcast again on their own, if they haven't already. I recommend them. Although if you're listening to them for the first time, pick one with The line up of Parrish, Sharkey, Barnholdt and Cifaldi, those are the best ones and will get you into it.

I used to listen to another podcast called the retroist, and there was this one guy on sometimes who talked like he had a mouth full of saliva, and loved Sonic and neo geo. I was surprised when I realized that it was the same guy who had a concert at Richie's arcade during the cagdc 2011 tourney, Keith Apicary. Ben Falls' favorite comedian:)

Another "new" review from a French gaming site:

http://www.neogeokult.com/special-reviews-us/donkey-kong-us/ (http://www.neogeokult.com/special-reviews-us/donkey-kong-us/)

HOW HIGH CAN YOU GET ?
by Tibe

"Coming a few months after the poor Space Panic, Donkey Kong is the second platform game in the history of gaming. When it hits the arcades in 1981, the title is acclaimed by critics and meet a huge success with gamers. So much so that one can literally say that it was the springboard to success for Nintendo: revenues generated by arcades and console adaptations - especially the great CBS Colecovision one - fill the coffers of the company and cement its reputation. In the early eighties, almost everything in videogame remains to be invented. This world is still in its infancy, and some firms develop at this period a few titles that will become legendary: Scramble, Burger Time, Vanguard, Galaga... all are famous names which invented styles or set basics for different gaming genres. That said, Donkey Kong remains one of the most iconic videogame of all times.

And for good reason! When the arcade game was released in 1981, it made sensation: the player embodies Jumpman - who will later become Mario - and must climb the floors to save Lady, the princess kidnapped by Donkey Kong. A scenario that inevitably recalls King Kong, and which was also worth a trial to Nintendo by Universal. Fortunately for the japanese, the U.S giant lost and was dismissed of all its claims. Shigeru Miyamoto was in charge of the game's development, and his talent was already undeniable: The graphics are above the competition, offering a beautiful and original design. Player have to go through floors of a building construction site, with metal beams, ladders, barrels, hoists, etc. DK is colorful and varied, with no less than four different game screens with distinct designs, each featuring an action of its own. If the main characters are well made, enemies and items are not left out: barrels, flames, springs, bowls, birds ... everything is fluidly animated, especially for the time. The movements of the hero are quick and handling is optimal, despite being extremely simple: only the four directions of the stick are used, plus a button for jump.

In every stage, you can collect bonuses and mallets: like Pac-Man, it has the hero becoming invincible and able destroy his enemies for a few seconds. Donkey Kong is divided into no less than one hundred and seventeen levels, with our four fixed screens looping. The difficulty goes crescendo, of course! In fact, it's all about making twenty-two 'loops', which are counted in blue at the top right of the screen (L = 04). If the first loop has only two stages, in the following features three, and so on up to a maximum of six. The one hundred and seventeenth level is known as the 'Kill Screen': a bug in the game (intentional or not) have Jumpman invariably dying after a few seconds, ending the game. But will we get there?! Below the loop counter is a 'bonus timer': it is a credit/time counter that decreases gradually. The sooner you finish the level, the more points you collect. If it reaches zero, you die. You also die if you fall from a platform. If you touch an enemy, a fire, a barrel or even Donkey itself, you will die too. In short, prepare to multiple deaths!

If the first stage is to go up the slope avoiding barrels that DK throws from the top, the second is a little different: you have to climb ladders to reach the last platform, but the enemies are not the same and the structure is different too. The third floor is more about 'platforming', and requires a significant level of accuracy and timing for the jumps... and finally, the fourth stage is about to break the seals of the structure, to get our gorilla falling from the top of the building and save the princess. The challenge is taking, the action well-crafted, scoring system well thought out and the atmosphere of the game simply legendary! Donkey Kong is still taking more than thirty years after its release, and a bunch of far more impressive titles: but once will not hurt, simplicity is sometimes an impressive asset."

I did those top 2 scores a couple weeks ago, one was a kill screen.  The bottom two were from over a year ago when I was just learning how to play.  The 526k game with no initials was Eric Howard from over a year ago.

It looks like Z82 Retrocade in Sherwood, AR (Little Rock suburb) located on Kiehl Ave (haha) is having a DK competition soon. So, if anyone in the area is interested it might be something to look into.

From facebook:

"It's time to start preparing for the Kong Klash 2!
Three different divisions, three first place trophies.
No extra fee to enter the tournament just pay the regular entrance fee to Z82 and your ready to challenge other Donkey Kong players. For more information and details: stop by Z82 Retrocade.

Shigeru Miyamoto, on the design philosophy behind Donkey Kong:
(paraphrasing from: http://iwataasks.nintendo.com/interviews/#/wii/nsmb/0/0 (http://iwataasks.nintendo.com/interviews/#/wii/nsmb/0/0))

"I would analyze games while I played them, trying to figure out what it was about the way the games were put together that made them enjoyable and made people want to play them again. I concluded that this was born of the players being mad at themselves. So I would try to analyze how the game made players feel that way. Now, a fun game should always be easy to understand — you should be able to take one look at it and know what you have to do straight away. It should be so well constructed that you can tell at a glance what your goal is and, even if you don't succeed, you'll blame yourself rather than the game."

 ;D

I think he was actually pretty successful, but somebody needs to explain "screwings" to him...

Donkey Kong World Championship will return to Denver’s 1Up in November

Was last year’s Donkey Kong World Championship at LoDo’s 1Up Arcade/Bar a success? Does an ape throw barrels at an Italian plumber?

Kong Off 3, the Donkey Kong world championships, will return to the Denver barcade this year to pit the best classic arcade game players against each other for a shot at the $4,500 purse, as well as bragging rights as the latest/greatest to reach one of the hardest kill screens of all time.

“It’s such an honor to be able to host the Kong Off 3,” Jourdan Adler, owner of the 1up, said in a press release today. “Every year the competition gets stronger as more and more players enter. With 12 players having a top score of 1,000,000+ (last year), we know its going to be an amazing event for both the competitors and fans.”

Denver’s second consecutive Kong Off is slated to take place Nov. 15-17 and will again be overseen by Walter Day, founder of the gaming score-keeping organization Twin Galaxies — which, not coincidentally, relocated last October from its longtime home of Iowa to an office above the 1Up.

The Kong Off 3 is free for spectators on a first come, first serve basis but space is limited. When capacity has been reached, especially in the evening hours, a 1-in, 1-out policy will be in effect. All ages are welcome until 7 p.m., after while the event is only open to 21 and over.

Check out the full press release below, and read more about qualifying rounds and players at Twin Galaxies.

Donkey Kong World Championship Returns to Denver
Kong Off 3 to be Held at The 1up

Denver, CO (August 29, 2013) – World championship events are notorious for riveting action, dramatic outcomes and the biggest names no matter whether the event is held on the gridiron, baseball diamond or in front of a classic arcade game. For the competitors, the goal is the same – to win and be crowned world champion. The Kong Off 3, the Donkey Kong world championship, is no exception.

Considered to be the world’s most prestigious live arcade competition, the Kong Off 3 returns to Denver in 2013. For the second consecutive year, the event is being held at The 1up Arcade/Bar from November 15-17. Last year’s event attracted more than 20 of the world’s best players as well as a capacity crowd.

The Kong Off 3 brings together the world’s greatest classic arcade gamers to battle it out for the title and their share of the $4,500 purse. The competitors will play the arcade classic Donkey Kong during a three-day competition with the highest scorer taking the victory.

“It’s such an honor to be able to host the Kong Off 3,” said Jourdan Adler, owner of The 1up. “The 1up has grown over the past year and so has this incredible championship. Every year the competition gets stronger as more and more players enter. With 12 players having a top score of 1,000,000+, we know its going to be an amazing event for both the competitors and fans.”

This year’s format has been altered to allow additional competitors the opportunity to qualify for the event. The world’s top 12 Donkey Kong scorers automatically qualify for the 22 player field with the final 10 spots determined through four Wild Card Division Qualifier tournaments.

The championship is sanctioned by Twin Galaxies Intergalactic Scoreboard, the foremost adjudicating authority on International Video Game World Record Scores. Walter Day, the company’s founder, will serve as the head official. Twin Galaxies is also responsible for verifying the world’s top 12 Donkey Kong scorers. Those players and their scores can be found at TwinGalaxies.com.

Included in the top 12 is last year’s champion Jeff Willms from Waterloo, ON, who stunned the competitive gaming world with his victory, Kong Off 1 champion and current world record holder Hank Chien from New York, NY, Donkey Kong legends and stars of The King Of Kong Steve Wiebe of Redmond, WA and Billy Mitchell of Hollywood, FL.

“This year’s Kong Off will be the most competitive yet,” said Chien. ” Every year the event seems to get bigger and better. All the players have improved their game over the last year so it’ll be exciting to see who comes up top.”

Perennial challengers Vincent Lemay of Sainte-Croix, Quebec, Dean Saglio of Kingston, RI and Donkey Kong Junior world record holder Mark Kiehl of Edmond, OK are also among the top 12.

“The competition in the Kong Off 3 has grown so much,” said Lemay. “Scores are now ridiculously high and you need to be dedicated to push the game to its limit. Personally, I will go all in and play at a high score pace, which will make it very hard to make it to the end of the game. If I do, there is a good chance that I will finish first.

“Still, there is a lot of randomness in Donkey Kong, and luck can be a big part of a three-day competition,” continued Lemay. “Whatever happens, I will be happy since a big part of the Kong Off 3 is spending time with my Donkey Kong friends.”

The Kong Off 3 is free for spectators on a first come, first serve basis. Space is limited. When capacity has been reached, especially in the evening hours, a ’1-in, 1-out’ policy will be in effect. All ages are welcome until 7:00 p.m. After 7:00 p.m. the event is open to those 21 and over.

The highlight of the Kong Off 3 is the Donkey Kong world championship but it is not the only happening. The largest number of arcade game world record attempts, a 24-hour marathon game of Tron by a single player as well as multiple attempts at completing perfect games on Pac-Man will take place during the three-day event.

The roots of classic arcade games can be traced to 1966 with Sega’s release of Periscope, the first arcade game to cost a quarter. In 1978, Taito released Space Invaders and started the arcade video game craze. Large arcades sprang up in shopping malls, while smaller ones appeared in restaurants, grocery stores, bars and movie theaters all over the world. In 1981, the industry was worth $8 billion but by the late 1980′s, the arcade video game rage faded due to advances in home video game technology.

In 2007, The King Of Kong was released and immediately rose to cult status. The documentary follows Wiebe as he attempts to claim the Donkey Kong high score from Mitchell, the reigning champion. Not only did the film spark controversy, creating a bitter rivalry between the two competitors, it also sparked the rebirth of arcade culture and inspired a new crop of Donkey Kong players.

“Donkey Kong has always played a pivotal role in arcade culture, both historically and in modern times,” said Chien. “Historically, it was the grandfather of all Mario games and the reason why Nintendo exists today. It has always held a mystical status because of its ‘kill screen’ which was only known to have been achieved by one player for nearly 20 years.

“When The King Of Kong was released, Donkey Kong experienced a rebirth. The film brought forward a new generation of players and along with it a renewed interest in arcade gaming. Donkey Kong is the most contended arcade title. In many ways, it’s also the ideal game for a live competition. It’s random enough so that the best player won’t always win. There’s no pattern, so it’s always interesting to watch. The strategy is more complex than just trying to score as high as possible.”

With competitive Donkey Kong on the rise, arcade wizard Richie Knucklez organized the inaugural world championship and The Kong Off was born. It was held at Richie Knucklez Arcade Games in 2011 in Flemington, NJ and featured the world’s top 10 competitors who played live to determine the true king of kong.

Knucklez will serve as the host of The Kong Off 3.

The 1up, located at 1925 Blake St. is open 360 days a year and features more than 45 classic arcade games, 16 Pinball Machines, three lanes of classic Skee-Ball and multiple sets of giant Jenga. With 14 beers on tap, a Hall-of-Fame of vintage cans, a solid selection of 40 oz. bottles of malt liquor, full bar and delicious fare, The 1up has something for everyone.

The 1up is easily accessed by public transportation (Light rail or Bus). Parking is available in the numerous public parking lots nearby. Further information can be found at The-1up.com.

It looks like there is going to be a retro video game expo in the Netherlands named "Retro Game Experience"  in a couple of weeks, to include a Donkey Kong high score contest (if any of you guys are in the area haha).

http://www.beeldengeluid.nl/high-score-competitie-donkey-kong (http://www.beeldengeluid.nl/high-score-competitie-donkey-kong)

(translated)

"The documentary The King of Kong is a real cult classic and tells the story of the fierce battle between the two old school gamers Billy Mitchell and Steve Wiebe. Both players were determined the high-score from the arcade version of Donkey Kong. The rivalry between both gamers delivered a number of spectacular and nerve-racking moments on, and made sure others took the challenge. Even rapper Eminem ventured a try! During the Retro Game Experience you can follow in the footsteps of the heroes of The King of Kong, and try the high-score.

So are you an enthusiastic newbie or an experienced pro: join the high-score competition during the Retro Game Experience. Who knows to win the custom made arcade stick of Shadaloo!"

I admire Icelanders actually, they told the crooked bankers to eat the fraud debt the banking system created and threw the crooked bankers in jails for fraud......and took back their country...To bad america wasn't more like Iceland.

Too bad America, the once shining beacon of hope for all,  is now seen world wide as a corrupt, fraudulant, bankrupt, warmongering joke. I'd be embarrased to say I was an american if I was traveling abroad.

Kudos to MR. Gunnarsson for his accomplishment and his country of Iceland for jailing crooked bankers and not buying the fraud debt the crooked banking system created.

This isn't really news, however I thought it should be shared.  Apparently there was talk about a "dramatic" remake of the KOK back in 2011.  This photo was originally from a random twitter page, Ben Stiller makes a good Billy Mitchel and it almost looks like the "Original King of Kong" sitting at the cab. :D

Looks like his noggin, and that's definitely a Steve Sanders shirt.

The scripted remake was being talked about when the movie originally came out in 2007. I always thought it was a weird idea, and it's too bad it never happened. Now of course there's absolutely no chance of it happening because it's been too long, too much has changed, etc.

$750? Maybe $75. Maybe.

Hello, I'm actually the guy who built that table. And I want to break down the price for you.
Lumber: $100
Glue: $3.50
Screws: $6
Plexi-glass insert: valued between $75-$150
Chauvet Color LED Splash2: (My cost) $200
My Time(Lets just say $12/h): Approximately 12 hours total, or, $144
Total investment: $528- $603(
With a 25% bump for profit applied to the max cost: Approximately $750

I stand behind this price because this table is legit. It is strong with the frame capable of holding up to 250lbs(WLL) and the plexiglass can support up to 50lbs(WLL) with no sag or stress. The way I mounted the LED fixture on the bottom allows it to emit color in all directions and uses the plexiglass as a form of diffusion as to not blind one while sitting next to it. The lighting fixture is profesional grade LED fixture with audio sensitivity and response, Auto(Vegas) mode, and/or can be controlled via a 3-pin DMX interface. What this means is that if I were to build more furniture in this way that you could daisy chain all of the fixtures together so that all of the fixtures in the chain will sync to a controller or master fixture. I'm a trained lighting technician with 4 years of experience and also a carpenter with 10 years experience. Oh yeah, I did all the work by hand. I can guarantee that this table is one of a kind, designed to function practically, and is built to the same quality(Probably better than) as any major furniture manufacturer. Its super solid.

Heres a video demonstrating the audio response: Under Light Wood Table With Vintage Donkey Kong Arcade Machine Plexiglass Top (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MrEBeBKoyQ8#ws)

I want to stress that I'm not mad, upset, or in anyway trying to pick a fight with you. I respect the fact that you think my table is not worth the money, I just wanted to try and convince you. Being an artisan is difficult when the general population is losing its ability to choose quality over price. From design to finish I dumped my heart into this table. Anyways, if you still think my table is only worth $75 still, then well be it, I wish you the best in life.

Not about DK, but a friend of mine forwarded me an excellent article about how diverse the fighting game community is:

"Why the fighting game community is color blind"
http://www.polygon.com/features/2014/2/6/5361004/fighting-game-diversity (http://www.polygon.com/features/2014/2/6/5361004/fighting-game-diversity)

If you're too lazy to read, I'll summarize (SPOILERS ahead).  The author claims the diversity of the fighting game scene is due to:

- low barrier to/cost of entry ("25 cents"), so would traverse socioeconomic boundaries
- welcoming community that encourages active participation
- diverse video game characters in fighting games that players from diverse backgrounds can identify with

The article got me wondering (and I've thought about it before), why is the DK community almost 100% white?  I believe the DK community has all of the above except the last.  I find it hard to believe that Mario being white is the sole reason for our community's homogeneity.  Any thoughts?

Hmm, interesting question.  Well you being the world arcade champion at least sort of makes up for not many nonwhites playing Donkey Kong.  One thing that is interesting is there are a few black arcade players, but for whatever reason none of them really play Donkey Kong. For instance

Triforce is great a Vs. Supermario Bros
Abdner Ashman is great a Jr. Pac-man, and Ms. Pac-man
Joshua Lombay is great at Timber, and Dig Dug
Darren Harris is great at Ms. Pac-man
There is a pretty good Track N' Field player as well
And Triforce has a friend who was a referee at Twin Galaxies whose name escapes me at the moment.

I have no clue as to why none of them have no interest in Donkey Kong.  Maybe someone should ask them?

Edit: Now looking at the list there at least seems to be a decent Asian representation.  Ben Mazowita, Hank Chien, and Jimmy Linderman are all in the top 27.

Jason Corey Brittain gets a PSP article today...

http://patrickscottpatterson.com/CultureJCB (http://patrickscottpatterson.com/CultureJCB)

"After 2007 film The King of Kong: A Fistful of Quarters became a cult classic, the original Donkey Kong arcade game has found a level of niche relevance again, with a long line of new contenders emerging to try and chase the world record and the elusive 'kill screen' that ends the game.

The connection with Donkey Kong began early for one of the up-and-coming contenders, Alberta's Jason Corey Brittain.

"I can remember the first time playing a Donkey Kong game for the ColecoVision that one of my friends had," he said. "I guess what really got me playing Donkey Kong like everybody else were the documentaries for King of Kong and Chasing Ghosts and everyone basically from the Donkey Kong community. I've learned so much about the game from everyone. I just keep on trying to do better."

While continuing his battle with the iconic pixel gorilla, Brittain has been fighting a battle outside of the arcade screen as well.

"I've had Type 1 diabetes for 23 years of my life and have been through different scenarios with this disease. Right now currently, I'm in a wheelchair," he revealed. "My right foot is swollen and I am trying to change over to a new gluten free diet while trying to get my blood sugars more under control. I've been keeping my foot up as much as possible with this happening now and been playing lots of Donkey Kong in competition. I've been off work for at least a couple months now."

While continuing to work to improve his health, Brittain has managed to push his personal best Donkey Kong score to more than 523,000 points. He recently went head-to-head with another DK contender as he took on Ohio arcade champ John Salter in a live streaming broadcast. Brittain came out on top as Kong fans watched from around the world.

"I was pretty nervous about playing against John at first since I knew how good of a video game player that he is at Tron and Armor Attack," he said. "I thought that it was a privilege for me to play against him. I would have to for sure say that this was a really an amazing highlight in my life so far and has brought my encouragement up to play Donkey Kong and do better at the game. Now he wants to play another fun competition again for a rematch sometime."

For now, Brittain continues his work to improve both on and off the video screen.

"Now I'm off work again for another two months because of my foot and its apparently not getting better," he noted. "I have to go to rehab at least likely once a week to figure things out. I have no idea what is going to happen next. I really want to go to the next Kong Off tournament to meet everyone in person and in order for me to go, I have to get better."

As Jason continues to work on improving both of his goals, a lifelong expert on the video game scene says she sees great things in the arcade champ.

"I think out of all the Donkey Kong players, Jason has faced more hurdles than anyone," said writer Catherine DeSpira. "There's those learning curves that all champions face, that throw up seemingly impossible levels to reach. But no matter what life or the game has thrown at him, no matter the impasse standing in his way, what has made him stand out is, in spite of all of that, he has surmounted every one, time and time again. There's a champion spirit in Jason Corey Brittain. And there's nothing that stands in his way for long, no matter what it is."
"

In the case of Shaun Boyd, it may be a "date achieved" vs. "date verified" issue.  Perhaps Shaun can confirm.

Kyle Goewert's entry is a separate submission altogether ("verified" vs. "pending").

Another quality write-up, as usual.  I always say that, so let me know if you get tired of hearing it.   ;)

Never...

I quickly compared our main HSL with your "rebuilt" Top 20.  Your list alerted me to an incorrect score (on our end) for Vincent.  I have since made the correction (from 1,135,600 to 1,135,900).

The magic number is 2,700!  ;D

The other differences are highlighted below:

- Dean: yes, it should be 10/4 and not 10/3. Timezone here actually made a difference, since when I was watching Dean achieve this score it was before midnight in California, but after midnight in Rhode Island. Of course, local time where the score was achieved is what counts, so it's 10/4.
Error: Blog

- Vincent: this was most definitely Friday, January 11th, because I wasn't home that day and remember specifically how mad I was that I had to miss the live stream and had to watch the replay, and I wouldn't have missed it on a Saturday!
Error: Forum

- Shaun: It was the 21st, and Facebook proves it! (https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=278243222271703&set=a.114739098622117.20002.100002580834722&type=1&stream_ref=10)
Error: Forum

- Dave: pure typo. 2013 and not 2012, obviously.
Error: Blog

- Corey: he got the 1,019 on Thursday night, 11/14. I remember thinking how funny it was that a wildcard got such a huge score before the actual competition had started. 11/17 was KO3 Day 2 (if you consider Friday "Day 0") and Corey's best for the tourney was 893,300.
Error: Forum

- Kyle: I know nothing about this 1,018 game. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't think there is video of this anywhere, TG never verified it, and Kyle didn't personally submit it to DKF, it was just passed on by word of mouth (I think). So it's sort of a limbo score, and honestly, I'm not sure how it should be treated. I don't doubt that Kyle did it, but it's tricky, so I just gave the officially verified score the nod, especially because he's in 19th place with either one. I suppose this will become an issue if and when somebody gets a score between 1,012,800 and 1,018,700
Error: ???

I hope I would have spotted the problems on my end eventually, but thanks for pointing them out, this is good...

The magic number is 2,700!  ;D

I know, that's how I immediately recognized your score as the correct one.  An examination of the audit trail reveals that we (Jeremy and I) inherited that value when we assumed ownership of the HSL.  I'm surprised it only took me 3 months to spot the error.   :)

I've also modified the dates for Vincent (01/11/2013), Shaun (05/21/2012), and Corey (11/14/2013).

Kyle: I know nothing about this 1,018 game. Yeah, I'm not sure what to do about Kyle's score either.  I'm not expecting "TG (Pending)" to be magically transformed into "TG (Verified)" anytime soon.  I believe the score, but I'd like something more substantial than a series of Facebook messages (or however it was announced).  A short video of the final 1-2 levels would do the trick (and, preferably, a restart to demonstrate the "3+1 lives" setting).  Otherwise, we risk setting a bad precedent.

I'll leave the score as is for now.

The interesting thing about that article, being 2003 and Seattle, is why did it still reference Billy Mitchell as the score to beat, even with it being known that the score was already beat by a "New York Player"? My answer to my own question would be when they talked to RTM, he basically must have went on and on about Billy Mitchell's history with the score that the writer found it better to focus on Billy's score other than Tim's.
Title: Re: DK in the news/on the net.
Post by: ChrisP on March 06, 2014, 02:15:33 pm
Yeah. I've made this argument before, but <Tim> was being downplayed long before the filmmakers ever got involved.

It's just like this interview from 2004 (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4pw1QTGamo4#) (before the movie was even an idea). It's Billy and Steve, talking about the big rivalry. Tim is never mentioned.

When you look at all this stuff, it gets a lot clearer why they chose to do the movie the way they did, and that maybe it wasn't just "pure Hollywood evil" or whatever.

Castle Kong: Castle Kong First Look (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tromPQQn6RU#ws)
They have a Castle Kong demo unit at Joystick Gamebar in Atlanta.  I've played it a few different times.  While I really wanted to like it, at this point I'd have to give the gameplay about a 2 out of 10.  The graphics aren't bad, but the control is just bad.  The controls are sluggish, you move too slow to dodge anything, your hitbox is huge, and the game is tedious patterns.

I've talked to some folks at Joystick Gamebar, and they've said the the developers of Castle Kong realize the gameplay needs rework  The developers are local in Atlanta, and  I'm hoping to have some facetime with them to give them some feedback on what's wrong with the gamplay.  Hopefully it will get better.

The black background has probably been made clear and it is being projected. Camera man's shadow falls on play field, but he/she never actually crosses through where the projection would probably come from. Notice how barrels half-disappear on the edge of the screen as they half-roll-off.

I wonder sometimes if Seth and Ed are aware of all that's happened since the movie.

Not really news, but just thought this was funny. Was at Chassis Arcade here in Copenhagen last night hanging out, when suddenly a big group of people started coming in. Turned out it was a bike race, where they had different stops where they needed to do things, and Chassis was one of them. They had been given 2 DKK each at the beginning of the race, only knowing that they had to use it at that address. When they arrived, they found out that they needed to play Donkey Kong. It was pretty funny, none of them had ever been down there or played DK, and they all pretty much sucked at it. No one finished the fist barrel screen, and pretty much all of them immediately went for the bottom hammer. Best score was 2900 points  8)

Ah, that explains the helmets.  At first I assumed it was to prevent the inevitable wild barrel head injuries.

Hmm... just looked up the location. That's super close to the Hidden Treasures arcade I recently heard about (but have yet to visit)... I wonder if they are connected.

Although, if I recall, there is a gamer who lurks in the peripheral shadows over on that edge of town that may be able to get like 300K/400K. I'll have to watch out for him/her.

Interesting article.  So do I take it Billy Mitchell will start to make his comeback in the summer of 2017 since his son will be graduating then, or does he have a younger child?  So it sounds like he still gets people recognizing him.   Also it is kind of cool to see his son getting some pretty solid offers from Division 1 schools.   I don't think I have seen the kicker receiver combo trick before.

From my conversation with Billy when I was driving him to Fairfield last August, my guess is he will be busy following his son's football endeavors for quite a while. He's pretty serious about giving his son the best shot at going pro. Because of this, he was actually quite interested in hearing my opinion on the subject, having been down that road, myself. Maybe this next August he'll need another ride and I can scrounge up some new info on how his son's potential looks and when Billy might finally have time to do a bit more gaming.

I highly doubt it will be that soon. If his son still has college left after 2017, I'm sure Billy will be busy following him for at least a few more years after that. At least that is the vibe I got from him when we talked about it. He seemed a lot like my own dad in terms of seeking to follow his son's football career closely.

What Wiebe didn’t know then was that he was tallying scores that bested the established world record. So in 2000 he set out to claim the record.

Hmm. This is actually really important.

Some controversial dialogue from KoK:

"I looked at Twin Galaxies. I just--well, I typed in Donkey Kong world record, and some spreadsheet came up, and I saw what the score was. It was held by Billy Mitchell, and it was, like, 874,000. I go, 'Hey, l can beat that.'"

Wiebe has caught some shit for this statement, with him being accused of being part of the "Sczerby coverup."

But if that year is correct, and Wiebe started looking into beating the record in 2000, then it would vindicate him as not lying or covering up anything (at least as far as that statement goes), since Tim's score didn't happen until the second half of the year, and wasn't verified until 2001.

Otherwise, nice article! Nice to see you in there Mitch.

Not really DK originally related but it turned out to be. From a local newspaper in my small town of 26000 people.
In short we are 8 guys starting an arcade in a 100m2 basement below the local cinema. We play classic games and new ones (CAVE shooters) and the reporter really liked the fact I was the Swedish DK champ and write quite an amount of text about this. The real reason for the article was to preserve the arcade culture and to raise som new members. 9 members now. If anyone want more translation, please ask.

The King of Kong's Billy Mitchell is coming to Screenland Armour for a late-night screening and Q&A  <Billy>

"Billy Mitchell is not an underdog. He was the standard bearer of classic arcade gaming — the champion Donkey Kong player featured in 2007 documentary, The King of Kong: A Fistful of Quarters.

Mitchell, with his dark mullet, beard and American flag tie, is a winner in the world of arcade gaming. Saturday night, he'll be at Screenland Armour (408 Armour Rd., North Kansas City) for a showing of King of Kong and Q&A after the showing.

The screening is set for 10:30 p.m. Saturday, August 8. Tickets cost $8 but are half-off with a Kansas City Comic-Con ticket stub. "

Just a quick notation of a Donkey Kong related contest taking place in Richardson, TX at Free Play Arcade for any of my mates from the area. Perhaps if you are from northern Dallas, Plano, or maybe even Denton you should check it out as the top prize is $250. The event takes place Sept 26, 2015.

http://freeplayrichardson.com/ (http://freeplayrichardson.com/)

“Kongapalooza” and World Record Challenges at Retropalooza

The primary arcade tournament during Retropalooza will be our “KONGAPALOOZA” on Saturday, September 26, starting at 1 PM. The tournament will consist of three rounds. The first round, the most important round, will force (Is force too strong of a word?) every tournament entrant to play Donkey Kong 3, the ignored but absolutely awesome final entry in the original Donkey Kong arcade series. Donkey Kong 3 is this weird, Mario-less game where the protagonist (Stanley the Bugman) must evict Donkey Kong from a greenhouse by spraying him with pesticides. To be clear, the entire point of this tournament is to encourage everyone to play Donkey Kong 3. Every entrant will have one credit and only the highest eight scores will move on to play Donkey Kong Jr., the difficult but mesmerizing sequel to the original Donkey Kong. The top three scores in Donkey Kong, Jr. will then advance to the finals to play Donkey Kong for the following prizes:

1st Place – $250 cash and a 1 year unlimited play pass to Free Play Arcade.
2nd Place – $100 gift certificate to Free Play Arcade
3rd Place – a four pack of passes to Free Play Arcade

I know what you are thinking. With Donkey Kong 3 as the barrier to advancing in the tournament, the results of this tournament are going to be wild and virtually random. With any luck, you’re right.

Former 'Donkey Kong' record holder's cartoon lawsuit tossed
November 23, 2015 Updated: November 23, 2015 1:48pm

TRENTON, N.J. (AP) — A video gamer known for holding the world record for Donkey Kong has had a lawsuit claiming a cartoon stole his likeness thrown out.

New Jersey Federal District Judge Anne Thompson threw out Billy Mitchell's lawsuit against the Cartoon Network on Friday.

The lawsuit stems from a character named Garrett Bobby Ferguson on the "Regular Show." Cartoon Network says that the floating, bearded head that cheats to win an arcade game is a transformative depiction of Mitchell.

Thompson ruled that the cartoon exaggerates Mitchell's traits to make him "cartoonishly evil" and that the show is protected by the First Amendment.

Mitchell, of Hollywood, Florida, is known in the video game community for his long black hair and beard. He is known for his role in the documentary "The King of Kong."

Wes Copeland reconquest rank of “King Kong” with impressive record in Donkey Kong arcade
Gaming

"Once you have felt the taste of being the “King Kong” by only a few hours in September last year, the dedicated US player Wes Copeland (right in photo) regained last night the world record station points in arcade Donkey Kong . The decisive match was transmitted via Twitch , and at the end of it Copeland reached an expressive number of 1,190,000 points , breaking with a good advantage the record of his rival Robbie Lakeman (the left in the photo), which was 1,172,100 points .

Upon learning that his score had been hit again, Lakeman quickly called your camera, your arcade Donkey Kong , and broadcast live his attempt to set a new record, but eventually failed in his mission . In a message published to your viewers and admirers, Lakeman proved you do not want to play Donkey Kong for a while, because I turned 29 and want to put your life order, and finished congratulating Copeland for his done by adding the following phrase. “The torch has been passed”
Who also congratulated Copeland for its achievement was the legendary Billy Mitchell, the first “King Kong.” In his message, Mitchell stressed the remarkable and exemplary dedication and effort of both Lakeman as Copeland, saying they should be proud of their accomplishments, and they certainly will be useful for both in all aspects of their lives. Talking about his record, Copeland said the strong psychological impact involved in the task, and did not forget to highlight the former record holders of Donkey Kong , especially Robbie Lakeman; read the complete message below.

Donkey Kong messes with your mind. It’s the only game I’ve ever played that can do this. Every player, 1.2m, 1.1m of, 1m, 900 thousand, who arrives on screen of death for the first time, and even the player who completes his first elevator 3rd floor, deserve much applause and respect for your hard work and dedication. It is one of the few games I’ve played it really is as a psychological warfare, and requires a unique combination of dedication, imagination and strong spirit to survive, improve and progress.

Robbie, as well as [the former record holders] Dean, Hank, Steve, Billy, Ben and Jos Tim would not have gotten where he arrived without a tremendous sample of endurance, perseverance, and personality. Robbie indicated that want to get away from the game for a while, but I know in my heart that whatever he seeks in his life, he will apply the same dedication that applied in this dispute for the world record. I know he will be successful.

Of course, as we are talking about Donkey Kong , the arcade with the most active competitive landscape, intense and unpredictable of all, the title of “King Kong” can change hands in the blink of an eye, or rather, in a jump barrels. However, we hope that Wes Copeland can enjoy your “crown” for a much longer time than a few hours this time.

Lakeman, a Valley resident who’s also notched scoring records on games like Stratovox and Super Pac-Man, will be a special guest of this year’s ZapCon.

“Robbie’s a super-nice guy and he expressed an interest in doing something with us, since he’s local,” Cleveland says. “Of course, we jumped at the chance to include him. Speaking of Donkey Kong news I think Robbie Lakeman's new Donkey Kong Arcade record my very well be the most under reported Donkey Kong record ever after three days! Go type in Robbie's score and Donkey Kong, and the results you get are this.

1. A link to the Donkey Kong High Scores on this forum.
2. A link to my thread on this forum about the feat.
3. A twitter post by a regular user on the topic.

Everything else really isn't even related.

Ok George, just to be clear, you're either saying this score is getting less attention than this one (you already did this once) https://donkeykongforum.net/index.php?topic=558.msg10299#msg10299 (https://donkeykongforum.net/index.php?topic=558.msg10299#msg10299) , or you're saying you don't count Deans score on this "list"; so which is it?

I mean under reported Arcade records.  I should have put Arcade the 2nd time I mentioned it in my post.  My mistake.

The one good thing is it's not Robbie's first time getting the record, and so he has had his share of fame fortunately.

Keep in mind, this is now the EIGHTH time the record has been broken since (and including) when Robbie initially broke it in September 2014. I'm fairly confident Wes will make it nine before too long. The record is now going down an average of once every two and a half months.

I joked in the shoutbox the other day that the higher the DK record goes, the more often it gets broken!

When Robbie initially beat Hank it was a big deal, since Hank had been the champion for over four years, and Wes beating Robbie was pretty spectacular too, given how that went down.

But generally speaking, each specific record-breaking event is becoming less and less newsworthy, simply by dint of how quickly each new score is following the last. I think the gaming press, the blogs *cough* etc., are just taking a more reserved approach nowadays. You can only post the same story so many times...

As for me, I'll put something up on the DK blog soon, but I'll level with ya, it's gonna be short!

New Playboy article:

The New Kings of Kong Are Cool With Sharing The Throne

http://www.playboy.com/articles/the-new-kings-of-kong (http://www.playboy.com/articles/the-new-kings-of-kong)

When the documentary The King of Kong: A Fistful of Quarters was released in 2007, it pulled back the curtain on a subculture that few knew existed: an insular community of gamers that lived to set video game world records.

The members of this community were holdovers and nostalgia seekers from the arcade golden age of the late ‘70s and ‘80s, when video games were still curiosities to the mainstream public. And the most notorious player from this era was Billy Mitchell, a hot sauce salesman with a bad mullet and a smug attitude (or so the documentary characterized him). He was also a world record holder—the first person to attain a perfect game on Pac-Man—and up until the mid ‘00s Mitchell was the (nearly unchallenged, save by one player named Tim Sczerby) Donkey Kong arcade champion, his best run totaling 939,900 points.

But then—as the beloved film documented—lovable hard luck case and high school math teacher Steve Wiebe broke the world record. It was an epic tale of nepotism, betrayal, and self-worth that pitted an arrogant, insulated king (Mitchell) against an overmatched, conspired-against underdog (Wiebe). There were even loyal subjects of Mitchell—Hands of the King like Brian Kuh—who apparently disliked Wiebe on principle, and according to the documentary, rooted for him to fail.

Like all great documentaries about niche subjects, The King of Kong touched on broader, more expansive topics beyond the immediate subject matter. One of the main themes was the power of the solitary individual. Wiebe’s pursuit of the world record was a lonely one. He practiced and played mostly alone in his garage; any public attempt for the world record was special and noteworthy. And in their limited interaction, Mitchell and Wiebe were cagey and guarded toward one another. They weren’t sharing strategies or swapping tricks; their single-minded competitiveness made them natural enemies.

In the post-King of Kong world of competitive retro gaming, however, the apparently cutthroat nature of the competition has slowly been replaced by something more vibrant and—surprisignly—friendly.

CHANGING OF THE GUARD

Harvard graduate and plastic surgeon Hank Chien had a completely different, more positive experience. Inspired by watching The King of Kong, Chien first started playing the game on his home computer before graduating to a real arcade machine at Brooklyn’s Barcade. It was through Barcade that he met up with a player named Ben “The Crusher” Falls, who got him even more involved with the online community. He bought a personal arcade machine and practiced on it at home for hours at a time.

Then, on Feb. 26, 2010, the moment of truth arrived: a snowstorm hit New York, giving the doctor all the time he needed to play Donkey Kong. He broke Wiebe’s arcade world record for the first time, with a score of 1,061,700.

“A lot of the reason why I stuck with Donkey Kong and broke the world record is because I met some great people during the process,” Chien told me. “There was teamwork; everyone was doing the best that they could, and everyone was helping each other.”

“I think that culture developed after the documentary,” said Chien. “It inspired a new generation of players who were more collaborative with each other.”

‘IT INSPIRED A NEW GENERATION OF PLAYERS WHO WERE MORE COLLABORATIVE WITH EACH OTHER.’

Halfway through the year, Chien lost the record back to Mitchell, who then traded it back to Wiebe; Chien took it back again at the beginning of 2011, and he continued, through late 2012, to beat his own score and push the world record higher. He eventually topped out with a personal high score of 1,138,600 points.

Today, Chien still plays in the “Kong Offs,” the public competitions where the best players compete against each other to achieve the highest scores. He is not, however, currently training for a world record. All told, Chien held onto the arcade record for close to four years before losing it to a competitor named Robbie Lakeman in 2014.

Lakeman began his own Donkey Kong journey in 2012. He and several of his friends would go to Funspot Arcade in Laconia, N.H.—the same arcade where segments of The King of Kong were filmed—to play on Sundays. What started as an innocent bar bet became a journey that would eventually lead to Lakeman’s own world record.

It took a lot of dedication. When Lakeman first started angling for the record, he went to Funspot approximately two to three times a week for up to six hours at a time. On more extreme days, he could play for up to ten hours. Lakeman was taking online courses for his Master’s degree at the time, and he would sometimes bring his laptop with him to the play sessions.

He had to assert himself to get play time. The Donkey Kong arcade machine was very popular; everyone who saw The King of Kong wanted to play on the machine where the Mitchell-versus-Wiebe drama took place. Lakeman remembers one kid who actively rooted against him just so he could have a turn.

Even though the online community existed when Chien was in his prime, it was tiddlywinks compared to the organized depth of knowledge that exists today. Lakeman is an active member of an online Donkey Kong community called donkeykongforum.net, and he enjoys the friendly, group-oriented nature of the current crop of competitors. They motivate each other to increasingly higher levels of success; posters will start new threads about basic and advanced strategies, and people who know how to read the code of the game will post about their latest findings.

“We’re all friends,” Lakeman told me. “It’s such a small, niche community, so everybody knows who everybody else is, and there are new players coming in all the time. We all hang out when we have the chance. We have the ‘Kong Offs’ every year, and that’s our big party.”

In the CNET Article...
Quote
You can apparently stop trying to beat the high Donkey Kong score now.The highest score that you can possibly attain has been reached.
In the MSN Article...
Quote
A New York doctor, Hank Chien, took the record in 2010 and again in 2011, before Copeland and Lakeman's rivalry saw the mark change hands multiple times over the past four years.
In the yahoo article...
Quote
"Other high-ranking competitors vying for the honor over the past several months include plastic surgeon Hank Chien, MAME enthusiast John McCurdy, and longtime player Jason Wade"

Most of the articles also claim that Lakeman has stopped going for the world record.  While this isn't correct, I can see why they might believe this based on his facebook post.

Either way, a lot of these article writers need to do some more research...

This is actually pretty cool and kind of ties in to something I've wanted to see for a long time. The time-lapse of the rivets riviots is interesting, and makes me wonder if you could do that over an incredibly long time and discern any sort of pattern in firefox movement, either using time-lapse or just grabbing their coordinates from the MAME debugger or whatever. Or anything. Even though firefox movement is pretty well-understood, it would be interesting to see if any patterns emerge over a long enough period of time (FIREFOXES...a couple of questions).

Or anything. Even though firefox movement is pretty well-understood, it would be interesting to see if any patterns emerge over a long enough period of time (FIREFOXES...a couple of questions).

We could also compare DK rivets with CK rivets.  <stirpot>

Is there an English translation of this?  Also, how does the popularity of DK in Japan compare to the US?  Doesn't seem to be as big.  Is there a competitive scene and if so why doesn't it seem to be integrated with the scene in the US/West?
