Title: What if the DKJr. record gets broken with pauses. Should it count?
Post by: homerwannabee on May 16, 2016, 12:09:20 am
I have now noticed a couple of times now that Mike Kasper has been pausing his DKJr. on a regular basis.  Usually to go to the bathroom or whatnot.  But the question should probably be asked for Mike's benefit.  I think it's better an answer to these questions are answered BEFORE he gets the high score on MAME.  What if he does get a higher score than Mark Kiehl's record score on MAME with pauses.

1) should it count?  Maybe give the score an asterisk, and note it had pauses?
2) Should we make another track that allows pauses in the game?

Pausing fine for practice games.  Not okay for official games.  Part of the struggle of attaining a score is ignoring fatigue, hunger, urge to pee, etc.

No way, and this is coming from the "4 men on whatever setting" guy.  ;D

The inability to pause is part of the fabric of what we're doing with classic arcade stuff, and is integral to what makes the games difficult. You have to be able to keep your shit together without the benefit of taking a breather. In the case of pausing, if we opened that door, what would count as a legitimate pause? 30 seconds? 10 minutes? 8 hours? Not even worth thinking about.  :)

This is kind of a silly and good question all rolled into 1. Most of us see hitting a 'pause' button as a no no but putting a game into some sort of holding pattern is generally considered acceptable for things like food or rest room breaks or just to get a little rest.

To address Mike and the DKJR MAME WR, he has zero interest in it. When he does go for the record it will be on an arcade machine and certainly wont be using any sort of pause function.

OK, it just sounded like he wanted to best Mark's high score on MAME.  He kept on saying he was on world record pace during the game.  Well it's good to know.  Sound like he wont get any bad surprises with his paused DKJr. game.

Yeah, before every second/point counted on the timer and just getting a killscreen was cool, I would at times leave Mario at the top of the Pauline ladder and dart to the bathroom and back. But, sacrificed 3,000 or so timer points in the process.

But, no, pause should never count in a real game. Natural hiding spots are fine. I think all rules stem from, could it be done in an arcade BITD or not.
