Title: In-game Pro Moments
Post by: Tyr1ck on March 03, 2013, 01:57:08 pm
Let's dedicate this thread to moments in a DK game where skill/luck/whatever got you out of a sticky situation.  Looking forward to some crazy posts!

I'll start it off~!

Haha, nice Tyr1ck. That was a well executed wall jump! (And a very wide jump! haha).

You could've climbed the broken ladder (since there wasn't any other barrels coming above you), it would have been less risky. But anyway, all that matters is that you survived, and still got 100 points, and you played with style! haha.

Nice reactions, Dave.  My only complaint is that your hand slamming the jump button caused the windows in my apartment to rattle.   ;)

I hope you didn't injure yourself on that one.

Good one, George.  Not only did you survive the stage, but you successfully leeched a barrel/fireball combo for 300 points, twice!

EDIT:  One correction to make.  You gained 300 points from a barrel/fireball combination, on 2 separate occasions; the first was indeed leeching, but the second was the traditional method of jumping over both.  Just wanted to make sure my description was technically accurate.

Post by: ChrisP on March 05, 2013, 10:56:32 pm
This is quite an advanced move for someone struggling with the game. The top girder fireball is never easy in DK.

As a point of interest, in D2K, you actually have to do the "line up the barrel with the fireball" thing a lot because there's a permanent top fireball on the L2+ barrel screens, and because the barrel screens involve more mandatory fireball-dancing in general.

The wrinkle is that D2K fireball-jumps are 100% controllable because fireballs always keep walking until they either hit an edge or a ladder they want to use. In DK their directionality is random and they can turn around and smoke you at any instant.
Title: Re: In-game Pro Moments
Post by: mikegmi2 on March 06, 2013, 05:30:08 am
Yea, I felt foolish for not recognizing how the fireballs behave in D2K when I first started playing it.  I just remember being like, dang, how are you supposed to make it far in this game if you have to jump all these fireballs? Then I realized they keep going straight and are much easier to jump.

Didn't know to place this in pro moments or X-files, since its just a rare occurrence of luck.

Dave, that was incredibly lucky! I've never seen that before. Vincent must've been watching your stream praying, "O God please, O God, O God PLEASE!!!" But apparently he forgot to pray hard enough for those 800s  ;)

Mike, that wall jump was impressive. I've never seen anyone have to do a wall jump above a ladder where a fireball is already climbing up like that before. It was perfectly timed to allow a split second for that fireball to get out of the way. Well done! However, knowing DK, after surviving something like that, I bet you died a stupid death on the next barrel screen or something of that nature.  ::)
Title: Re: In-game Pro Moments
Post by: Xermon54 on May 03, 2013, 03:03:33 pm
Wow Dave, pretty cool! 4 blue smashes with bottom alone is already rare, but 4 blue smashes in a row is extremely rare! That's awesome.

Mike: Pretty nice! But... we hear the "100 points" sound only when you land your wall jump. Does it always happen that way when you wall-jump from that far? You hear the "100 points" when you land? I don't think so, it looks strange.
Title: Re: In-game Pro Moments
Post by: mikegmi2 on May 06, 2013, 05:36:07 am
Yea I know what you mean Vincent, it is strange.  I have never done a jump like that before so I don't have anything to compare it to...but I agree, it is weird how the 100 points sound happens when I land.

Thanks, that's a good example of instinct vs analysis. If you look at the set now, I probably could have cleared the triple jump and have time to do the back jump of the 4th barrel, but didn't do the in-game spacing analysis that is required befroe performing such a jump, or it looks like a quick run up the broken ladder would have done it, it was all happening so quick, so just a long wall jump was the only instinct.

Yeah, back when I first started playing DK, I spent way too much time testing out was actually possible in the game than just playing it. Haha. This is one of the things I had figured out and tested for myself, but then, ironically, I saw Dean do it like the next day. I hadn't seen it since. Didn't think it'd take that long to see again, but I guess most people didn't know it was possible.

Post by: up2ng on August 31, 2013, 12:22:13 pm
Nice one!  Yeah, every once in a while I end up trying this when I'm just a bit too late to set up the back jump -- it's definitely pretty tough to get the smash this way though.

Now, the thing I was thinking about recently is if it's possible to back jump (or straight jump) a group of 2 barrels and smash BOTH of them with the top hammer.  I think it is actually possible but I've never done it and I'm pretty sure no one else has either.  If I had money to throw around I'd put up a bounty to see that!
Title: Re: In-game Pro Moments
Post by: lakeman421 on August 31, 2013, 12:44:55 pm
I think it would be possible if you had that odd two barrel grouping that overlap as a result from a wild barrel and then timing the jump perfectly.  I would like to it if it could happen but setting it up with be a challenge itself and then executing the jump would be even more difficult.
Title: Re: In-game Pro Moments
Post by: stella_blue on August 31, 2013, 04:07:03 pm

It occurs to me that we've been using the term "back jump", as it applies to a hammer grab and smash on the barrel boards, to describe 2 very different things.  I never gave it much thought until recently.

When back jumping a barrel while grabbing the bottom hammer, we're moving and jumping in the same direction as that of the oncoming barrel.  I think of this as the classic back jump definition.

When we grab the top hammer, it's just the opposite; we're jumping toward the rolling barrel.  In other words, it seems that a top hammer back jump is really a forward jump, except that Mario's sprite is typically facing left (away from the barrel).

Does this make sense to anyone?

I understand. I realize now that I actually have to tweak some of the definitions on the 'DK Terms' thread.  :o

back when I first started playing DK, I spent way too much time testing out was actually possible in the game than just playing it.

And you've changed... how?  ;D

Touche. I actually bet myself that you (specifically!) would call me out on that!

Hi all

Was just practicing level 1-1 (quite poorly it must be said) and got stuck in bottom right corner. Was expecting to die but ended up bouncing off wall and over fireball.

Why is it there are times when I expect to be hit by a barrel but then when I blink, I'm still going?

You really think so? I definitely didn't think it was that amazing! :) There's always so much luck involved with these sorts of situations that it's hard to say what exactly is skill and what isn't.

What other 2 do you have in mind?

Haha, I just re-watched.

One thing I noticed is that I think I am very biased against the WBs because of all my WBH experience. I felt almost no threat from all the WBs at the time, that I hardly even noticed them. For me, the biggest obstacles were those fireballs -which I feel is very luck-based, and which would make sense of why I initially viewed it as mainly just luck. But... yeah... there were way more WBs than I had initially remembered. That would probably add to the HYPE for many people. ;D

If anything, I could at least use this as a platform to say, in all seriousness: PLAY THE ****ING WILD BARREL HACK!!!!  ;D

Seriously, if you get good at the WBH (i.e. able to pass 1-1 like 30-50% of the time), you will feel WAY more comfortable on levels 3 and 4 of normal DK.

Ok, I had to make another post here to get a total of 667. Not that it really matters but it is fun to think about even if it is essentially a misunderstanding of the biblical reference. I must add that it will a 500 point net, not 600. But as it is, I think this stands as the WR for now until someone challenges this with proof. :D

Here is a last-ditch effort that can be used on the rivets (similar to a kong jump).  This may or may not have already been shared somewhere before, sorry if it's a repost.  One thing to note is that the fire could either freeze or reverse after exiting the ladder, in which case, no dice.

Yeah, that's a pro moment. That jump is what I used to call years the "ultimate jump", but the ultimate will be for the blue to be involved and get 800, for a total of  1900 pts.

I did this jump years ago with a blue barrel, but only got 500 pts, had it on youtube, but erased it.

Wow, even at 500pts that may be the largest single jump play ever, at 1600pts.  The odds of getting the group and smash are already insanely low, so the coupled 800-smash makes its a statistical jackelope, it may never happen, meaning you've potentially got the record tied forever, Love it?

Hey Ethan and Dave,

I combined both of your pro moments into one extended clip, in the style of an "NFL Films" highlight reel.  I couldn't decide between 2 accompanying themes, so I ended up creating a separate version for each.

Here's the first version:

"If you can't run with the big dogs, stay on the porch!"

DK Pro Moments - Ethan & Dave (1 of 2) (https://www.twitch.tv/stella_blue/v/49332774)

And this is the second one:

DK Pro Moments - Ethan & Dave (2 of 2) (https://www.twitch.tv/stella_blue/v/49332739)

I'm a total hack when it comes to video editing, but I hope you like them.

Robbie Lakeman recently hosted an informal wine & cheese party at his home.  A family of fireballs showed up "unexpectedly and uninvitedly", looking to cause trouble.  Robbie didn't take kindly to their hostile behavior, so they had to be punished.

Similar to the "Ethan & Dave" videos, I've created 2 versions of this highlight.

Version #1 (recycling a previously used soundtrack):

DK Pro Moments - Robbie (1 of 2) (http://www.twitch.tv/donkey_kong_forum/c/4462628)

Version #2 (experimenting with a theme not previously used):

The reason I went right was because I needed to get all of the prizes due to the recent tournaments rules, so I had to get that umbrella for the game to continue.

Don't know if either of these qualify as pro moments, but thought it worth mentioning cuz they were pretty unique...and I wish I had video of either:

1) Jumping to get the lower hammer on barrels level, a wild barrel was overhead, and was smashed overhead while jumpman at the peak of the jump.  I was recording this with wolfmame, and when I tried to screen capture the playback, the inp file somehow corrupted.  My intention was to make this my avatar on this forum.  Lost forever, not sure if I could ever do this twice. :(

2) Jumped a two firefoxes grouped together, on the rivet level, and lived to tell about it.  I then landed between the two-firefox cluster and another firefox, directly on the rivet to end the board.  Sadly, this feat only netted 100 points. :(  Even sadder, the webcam capture of the gameplay did not clearly show this action on the screen.

Hey Robbie, I get a "This video is private" msg from that link, it might be set to private instead of unlisted, I might be wrong but I don't think sac's are tracked since you could theoreticaly ignore the bonus timer and continue grouping, I would guess that its only boards that are completed.

17,400, that's without a doubt the biggest sac, and possibly the biggest barrel score done on a real game. Obviously, you probably took some extra risks when sacing that someone wouldn't normally do in a normal game, but 17,400 is still fking huge. I'd love to see that video, but it's still private.

I guess the idea behind it was for the sake of calculating the highest possible score. Since a perfect game would have 3 sacs you could add the 3 highest sacs ever done to that kind of game. Just a thought not sure how these you guys calculated these things.

So I wasn't sure if there was already a better existing thread for such things so mods please feel free to move this post if it belongs somewhere else. . .

So a long time ago I had this funny "glitch" happen during my stream where the game detected that I had jumped over a barrel very late after a wall jump and the sprite appeared much lower than normal.  I think Mitch remembers this and I'm not sure who else was there.  It is very rare and I've never been able to duplicate it.

Well, it just happened again yesterday in the exact same place and this time I saved the inp.  Attaching the inp here.  Check it out!

I've managed to duplicate this a couple of times just now.   I could look at the code if we were all curious enough about what exactly is going on.   Without looking at the code, I'd guess that it's something to do with the sequence of logic - maybe this:

Normally the game checks for jump bonus at the moment of a jump's peak.
If you bounce on a wall after a jump's peak, the bonus checks normally.
If you bounce on a wall before the jump's peak, bonus is never checked for.

If you happen to position yourself so that a bounce and bonus check happen in the same frame... maybe the flag to check the bonus gets set (maybe the bonus gets checked as well), but then the bounce happens and prevents the next step of logic (display & tally the bonus) from being triggered until after you land.   At that point it uses Jumpman's landing coordinate instead of his jump-peak coordinate to calculate where to display the bonus sprite.

*edit*  It might be that the bonus check in this case actually happens when you land (notice that Jumpman moves right after he lands in the .gif above, so the joystick is still being pushed to the right) and it counts the barrels near Jumpman's landing position for the bonus instead of the barrels under him during the jump itself.

Sock Master, I think you're onto something! It definitely looks like it uses his landing position. Crazy!
