I know Ill get shot for this but....

Elevator action

I respect the game and those who like it, also the high level of play you guys are capable of. I just find it way too slow.

I'll eat that bullet for you.  EA is the suck!

I'll add another controversial opinion...

Every shmup ever (sans Galaxian, Centipede and Millipede, which obviously aren't the type of shmup I'm talking about)!

I honestly find every shmup to be the same game.  Some have more bullets than others, some have more intricate scoring systems than others, but in the end they all resemble each other so closely they seem to be delivered from a cookie cutter.  I have no respect for the genre.

Dragon's Lair

Agreed. A laserdisc game is about as much of a "game" as a DVD menu. These were expensive to play and utterly un-fun. It is my understanding that you couldn't set these for 1 quarter even if you wanted to. So basically you'd put in 2 quarters and die 3 times within about 20 seconds, without really understanding why you died or how to prevent it. I never downloaded any emulators for these, so California Extreme gave me an opportunity to play for free and see if I could figure out how to not-die. I left as bewildered as ever. I always feel like I'm hitting the direction (or whatever) at the right time, but I guess not. I don't get it, all I know is that back in the day I never felt as robbed by a game as I did by these.

Popeye

ffft, nobody likes Popeye in the first place, so this doesn't fit!

Anything by Universal that isn't Lady Bug

That's fine, but if Mr. Do is bad, then Dig Dug is necessarily worse.  Kappa

Yeah, I don't get the appeal of these either. Collect power-ups to change the shape and color of the projectile coming out of you, memorize deterministic obstacles/enemies, die and watch power-ups float away unless you can grab them, kill boss, next level. Why did so many companies make the exact same game over and over?

As for me, I don't think it's "terrible", but I don't see what all the fuss is about with Mario Bros. I keep trying but it just seems like you have to stand around too much waiting for things, and when you move, every surface you walk on is as slippery as ice, until you get onto actual ice, when it becomes even worse. It's like they made Mario deliberately hard to control to compensate for the game being too easy if they didn't. That's the sign of design flaws, I think. I'll still work on it though.

Also:
Jr. Pac Man
Frogger

Keep in mind that my taste in games is shitty.

This made me chuckle.

Ill throw in a couple more:

Qix
Burgerti.....oh wait nobody likes this.

Ha ha, I lol'd at the ChrisP MB surface comment as well.  It's very true.

I love Qix but then again, Taito hype.   It's not for everyone.....sort of like the leather pants of CAG

Most fighting games.  Talk about making the same thing over and over and just changing the name...  I'm sure one or two are okay but wtf?
Most laser disc games.  Seemed like a good idea at the time.
Popeye.  FailFish
TMNT
Tron
So many others...  <thefinger>

Tron seems a bit polarizing, either you love it or hate it.  I have fond memories of the light cycle screen sounds filling up the arcade as a kid and perhaps more than any other arcade sound makes me flashback to that time I think.

Most fighting games.

I'd add most shmups to that.

Most games of all genres are fking terrible.

1. Junior
2. Any Pacs at slow speeds
3. Tron
4. Frogger (I still like the game but it's painful to play and 10x worse to watch)
5. Gauntlet (I still love playing with friends but it's one of the most boring game play wise(

oh yeah, Gauntlet, good catch.  That and Rampage.  Both suck unless you pump in a million quarters and even then they suck.  I learned to hate Gauntlet from MAME - just put in a ton of health and don't even use weapons just push against enemies, add health as needed.  yuk

People think they like BurgerTime. They get so excited when they see it at arcades and stuff, and they say how much they liked it or were good at it or whatever.... but then they start playing it. It may not be liked in this crowd because we know better, but I think it's really high on this list for the general public.

My list:
1. Joust
2. Laser disc games - Whoever said these originally is 100% correct.
3. Dig Dug
4. Pacman
5. Mario Bros

I never liked Defender, though I've probably never given it a fair shake. Pretty much all FMV (Full-Motion Video) games like Dragon's Lair and pretty much all NFL/NBA sports games.

I can't believe you guys are dissin' DK Jr. and Dig Dug! :) Also, fighting games are awesome! (Except Mortal Kombat and Killer Instinct.) I love the head-to-head competitiveness of them.

Oh, and I don't know if anyone ever liked them, but quiz games = terrible.

I never liked Defender either, but then I finally got into it in some depth during Yolympics and now I think it's seriously awesome. I admit I haven't played it since then, but I'm gonna be hitting it hard during CAX this year with real controls. Give it a few hours and the learning curve might let you in a little...

Junior and Tron are both problematic games that I nonetheless enjoy playing. And the Tron cab is top 5 among all time greatest cab designs (EDOT being number 1 on my list), so that has to be worth something.

Echo the sentiment on Frogger. I respect the game, but I don't like playing or watching it.

I would have to defend fighting games to at least some degree though. They're not as similar as shmups are similar! SF2 Turbo is quite separate from an MK game, and both are a totally different experience than, say, Tekken 3.

Just wondering: Exactly why do people hate BurgerTime, Dig Dug, and Joust? Is it because, after a certain level of attained skill/knowledge, they become easy? or what?

Play Dig Dug with the music on and you'll see why.
Burgertime? Well, ah, where do you want me to start

Joust? Don't listen to anyone. Joust is awesome

Fair enough. I guess I don't like the music (in the longterm), but I think the gameplay is cool.

Burgertime? Well, ah, where do you want me to start

How about, for starters, just start. Lol. I honestly don't see why it isn't at least a better version of Pacman. At least with BT you can put it on the hardest settings and go for a ride!

Joust? Don't listen to anyone. Joust is awesome

Agreed. Hence my confusion.  ;D

It is better than Pac-Man but that's akin to saying Miss Congeniality 2 is better than Miss Congeniality, I would rather not see either of them.

I also find Burger Time to be clunkier control-wise than Pac-Man and Dig Dug.

5. Frogger

If I could pick 10 instead of 5, I would probably copy this list. Most of these were on the list of ones I cut, and I've been regretting not inclding Q-Bert.

Defender is a great game, but the controls make it literally unplayable for me.

Both shmups and fighting games are generally too hard for people who aren't masochists to enjoy them, so I can understand the hate. Though I would liken a good shmup to the first five or ten times you play DK (if you don't know about pressing/steering/star/weave etc). You flail around and die a lot, and if you don't keep playing you'll never have any idea that there's so much more to the game that you'll never see.

For all the <mad> over Popeye and Joust, I actually have yet to hear anyone actually enumerate what, specifically, is so bad about them, and I'm genuinely curious about those two in particular.

I don't care for the gameplay in either of them.  Popeye feels like I should be able to be more offensive, I'm fking Popeye ffs, look at my arms!   Joust I never cared for as a kid, my brother was a fan of it so maybe that's why I never enjoyed it.  I simply don't find either of them enjoyable to play.  It doesn't make them terrible I suppose, just makes them games I would walk past.

As for Joust, every once in a while I think I want to get better at the game and give it a shot,  then once I start flapping those wings I rage quit. The entire process takes about 1 minute to complete from "hey this seems like fun" to rage. I pass on Joust.

Popeye: yeah Steve, you're spot on. Popeye is totally defensive. All you do is run away. Of course tricking Brutus a bit to create a delay... is really just a tactic to get a head start on running away again. Run Popeye run! This is another game similar to DK that ends quickly for anyone new to the game too. The average game for typical non gamers lasts less than a minute. Another huge frustration is chasing hearts that suddenly turn direction for no apparent reason. Usually this leaves Popeye flat footed and ripe for a pounding. One bright note is that when you do hit Brutus, he takes quite a tumble around the screen. If you've not paid attention to the tumble he takes, it worth a look. I ignored it for years then finally watched the tumble and laughed. Mind you it's a short lived bright note.

-Pac anything
-Shmups
-Mappy (Mappy to me is like Joust - seems like fun, then the rage quickly sets in)
